Chapter 17 - 17 Goldy Aunty

Chahat stepped into the dormitory, taking in her new surroundings. As she entered, a plump woman with a warm smile noticed her and approached.

"Beta, are you the new girl who moved in today?" the woman asked kindly.

"Yes, ma'am," Chahat replied politely.

The woman chuckled. "No need for such formalities, dear. You can call me Goldy Aunty." She patted Chahat's shoulder affectionately. "Now go freshen up quickly and come down for dinner."

"Aunty, just give me two minutes. I'll be there soon," Chahat assured her.

"Be quick, and bring your roommate along," Goldy Aunty reminded her before walking away.

Chahat entered her shared room to find her roommate, Mehandi, already getting ready to head out.

"You're here! Hurry up; it's dinner time," Mehendi urged.

"Just a minute," Chahat said, quickly heading to the washroom to freshen up. Moments later, she joined Mehendi, and together they made their way to the dining area, walking hand in hand.

A long queue had already formed as students eagerly waited for their turn. Chahat's eyes widened in surprise at the variety of dishes displayed before them. The spread was far more elaborate than she had expected. After a moment of deliberation, she opted for chapati, two types of gravy, and a portion of rice. Mehendi, on the other hand, picked roti, a selection of different gravies, and a generous serving of bhindi, one of her favorites. She also took some rice to complete her meal.

They found a cozy corner to sit and enjoy their dinner. The first bite sent a burst of flavors through Chahat's taste buds. The food was simple yet delicious, each dish rich with spices and warmth. As they ate, the aroma of freshly cooked meals surrounded them, adding to the comforting atmosphere of the dorm.

Just when they thought the meal was over, they were served a steaming bowl of rasam. Mehendi eagerly mixed it with her rice, savoring every bite, while Chahat, curious about its taste, decided to drink it instead. The tangy, slightly spicy broth awakened her taste buds in a way she hadn't expected. The flavors were unique, a perfect balance of warmth and zest, but she soon realized she was too full to finish it.

"That was absolutely delicious! I truly enjoyed the meal," Chahat said, leaning back with a satisfied sigh.

Mehendi nodded in agreement, a content smile on her face. The first day at the dorm had been comforting, with good food and welcoming company. Chahat felt a sense of ease settling in—this place was beginning to feel like home.
