Chapter 27 - Chapter 26

Nightmare quickly flew through the air, barely giving Noah enough time to dodge. Nightmare turned his head to look at Noah, but the force from his leap carried him into the cave wall with a loud crash. Cracks appeared from where Nightmare hit the wall with dust and small rocks falling from it. Nightmare fell from where he crashed into the wall, and he landed with a thud. He bent his head down, and he looked Noah directly in the eyes.

"I'm sure why you're here, but I'm not sure why you want to kill me." Nightmare said, "However, I do have a few guesses. You must be someone from around here. After all, you know about the dragonslayer spear, so you're probably fed up with the taxes. Well, it doesn't matter as I'm just going to kill you and keep the taxes going, or maybe I'll raise them. It doesn't matter to you."

When Nightmare finished, Noah laughed for a small bit before saying, "It doesn't matter to me? Hah, that's a nice joke. The taxes were the reason I first came to kill you, but I chickened out at the last moment. Then William came here to get revenge for his father, and you know what happened to him. And lastly, I'm here now to get revenge for my town and all its people. That doesn't matter to you however because, as far as I'm concerned, you were dead as soon as you burned my town to ash."

It was Nightmare's turn to laugh this time, and he loudly did so while throwing his head back, "You actually think you're going to kill me. That's one of the best jokes I've heard in a while. You can try, and you will fail." When he finished, he lunged at Noah with a claw swipe. Noah dove towards Nightmare on reaction which caused Nightmare to fly over him. Noah quickly stood back up and turned round to face Nightmare, but Nightmare was already swinging downward with a talon in an attempt to crush Noah. Noah quickly ran towards the gold piles on his left as he didn't want to get crushed, and he didn't want to corner himself against the cave wall to his right. He began to run in between the gold piles while watching Nightmare. He wanted to wait for Nightmare to overextend and give him an opportunity to attack. When Nightmare saw him running through the gold piles, he began to run towards him, either knocking down the piles of gold or running straight through them.

After a small while of Noah running away from Nightmare, Nightmare lept at Noah again. However, this time Nightmare had to go through multiple piles of gold in order to reach Noah, and this caused him to not be able to reach him. Nightmare hit the ground and slid over to Noah. When Noah saw this, he stopped and turned around to strike whatever was closest to him. This happened to be one of his front legs, the left one to be precise. Noah thrust forward with the legendary spear, and, just as the spear was about to hit Nightmare's scales, the runes on the shaft turned red and they produced a small glow. The spear pierced through Nightmare's scales, shattering them, and it easily pierced through Nightmare's skin and flesh with it only stopping when it hit his bones. Even though it stopped, it still caused a few cracks to appear. Nightmare roared in pain, and he stood back up, grimacing in pain with black blood spurting out of his wound. Once he got back up, Nightmare responded by trying to bite Noah. Noah managed to dodge this by running back away from Nightmare. He wanted to go back to running away from Nightmare and wait for another opening, but this plan was foiled. After Noah dodged the bite, he looked back to see what Nightmare was doing, and he saw that Nightmare was stabbing at him with his tail. 'Crap! I forgot about his tail. No matter what happens, I cannot get hit by his tail.' Noah thought in a panic. He rolled to the right to dodge the tail stab, and he turned around to face Nightmare. He was immediately confused however as Nightmare was smirking, and Noah saw, out of the corner of his eye, that Nightmare hadn't drawn his tail back. Once Noah had seen this, Nightmare began to quickly move his tail in a swipe towards Noah. 'I can't roll away from this. What do I do? What do I do?' Noah quickly thought before he got an idea of what to do. After waiting for a few moments, Noah did the biggest jump of his life in order to hurl himself over Nightmare's tail. The tail moved below Noah, just barely scraping his feet. Nightmare's tail sweep swept all the gold coins and other treasures that got hit by the tail far away, leaving the area in its wake bare. Noah landed on his feet, and he stumbled before getting his balance. Noah looked around in order to find the next place to run to before his thoughts were interrupted by Nightmare's voice, "I'm done with this game of cat and mouse."

"Oh? Are you now?" Noah said, trying to further enrage Nightmare, and while turning around to face Nightmare.

"Yes I am. Now say your last words as this is the end for you." Nightmare said before beginning to suck in air. 'Crap, crap, crap, crap, crap!' Noah's thought wildly. 'I don't have time to get behind something, and it would probably melt anyways.' Noah held his arms in front of his face, and he turned his head away from Nightmare. This had the indirect effect of putting the legendary spear up towards Nightmare.

After a few seconds, Nightmare finally released his flame, and Noah waited for his death to come when he got hit by the flames. But when they did, it took Noah a few seconds to realize that he hadn't died. He looked back up at Nightmare, confused at what had happened, and what he saw had very much surprised him. The runes on the legendary spear had turned blue, and it produced an invisible shield that was blocking the flames that would've hit him. Noah watched as the fire flew across the shield. 'Wow, what a beautiful sight.' Noah thought, momentarily stunned by what he was seeing. He shook his head to clear his thoughts, and looked back towards Nightmare, trying to figure out what he should do next. 'Wait, this is a prime opportunity to attack. However, the runes turned red the last time I attacked Nightmare, and this time the runes are blue. Will the shield cancel when I attack him.' Noah thought, puzzling over how he should attack Nightmare. After a second of planning, Noah shot out of Nightmare's fire to the right, and he ran towards Nightmare's front right leg. Once Noah got out of the fire, the runes on the legendary spear lost their blue color which signified that the produced shield was no longer active, and he took a mental note of that. Nightmare seeing this, stunned that Noah had managed to survive his last attack, quickly stopped his fire breath, and he took a step to the left in order to try to dodge Noah's oncoming attack. This didn't work however, as Noah hadn't attacked yet, so he just adjusted his course in order to compensate for Nightmare's movement. Once Noah had gotten close enough, Nightmare tried to stop him by using a claw swipe, but Noah dodged it by jumping onto his talon. He stabilized his landing by stabbing the legendary spear into Nightmares talon. Nightmare roared in pain, and he violently shook his talon in an attempt to shake Noah off of it. Noah held tightly to the legendary spear so as to not get thrown off. Once, Nightmare had stopped shaking his talon, Noah pulled the legendary spear out, and he continued to climb up Nightmare's leg. Once he reached Nightmare's shoulder, he stabbed the legendary spear in it as far as it could go. Nightmare roared in pain, and he began to spin his whole body around. Noah desperately clutched onto what was still left of the legendary spear that wasn't in Nightmare's shoulder. Once Nightmare stopped spinning around, Noah shook his head to get rid of any dizziness, and he pulled the legendary spear out. Once he pulled the legendary spear, he went to continue to climb up Nightmare, but he was suddenly thrown off when Nightmare unsuspectedly and violently spun around again. Noah flew into a nearby pile of gold, sending gold coins flying. Noah pushed himself back up, and he stumbled out of the pile of gold. Once he did however, he saw Nightmare's tail swiping at him out of the corner of his eye. 'This is fine, the shield will protect me.' Noah thought, holding out the legendary spear towards the oncoming tail. He watched the runes on the spear turn blue as it produced an invisible shield, and he moved his eyes to watch the tail just as it hit the shield. Once it hit, the shield held for a moment, and he began to plan his counterattack. He had to stop as he saw fractures spread across the invisible shield, and he began to panic. Noah moved to dodge the oncoming tail, but he was unable to and was sent through multiple piles of gold. He finally stopped after he went through 5 piles of gold, and he laid in the sixth for a moment, thinking, 'What just happened? The tail broke the shield?' He looked at the legendary spear in his hand. 'This spear may be magic, but it doesn't make me invincible.' After he finished that thought, he pushed himself up into a standing position. He watched as Nightmare walked over to where Noah was, and he went into a battle stance. Something felt wrong however, and he looked down to see what was wrong. He saw that the legendary spear had broken into two pieces, and he stood completely still in shock.

"Oh, your magic stick broke? What are you going to do now?" Nightmare teased when he saw that the legendary spear broke. 'He's right, what can I do? I have no way to break through his scales without this spear. But I can't just back down now, not without avenging the lives this bastard took.' Noah thought, looking around. He saw that he was knocked back to the place where he had gotten the legendary spear, and he saw his own spear lying down on the ground. 'That's it! My spear may not be able to pierce his scales, but it can pierce his eyes.' Noah thought with a smile, running over and grabbing his spear. "What are you going to do with that stick? It's not going to be able to pierce through my scales. Like it or not, your fate is sealed." Nightmare asked with a lot of arrogance.

"I'm not one for monologues, but I feel like it is necessary in this situation." Noah said and then he took a deep breath before he continued, "I said before that the reason I am here to kill you is to get revenge for my town. What I didn't tell you, but what you can probably guess, is that I am not going to give up my mission at any point. I am not going to accept any result other than success. I am here for my town, its people, my friends, and my family. And this is the spear that is what I use for them, and it's what I am going to use to put their souls to rest!"

"How noble of you." Nightmare responded, "Unfortunately for you, that isn't going to happen." After he finished, he shot forward, biting at Noah. This attack was slower compared to his previous attacks due to the loss of blood, and Noah was easily able to dodge it. He had the perfect opportunity to leap onto Nightmare's shoulder and attack him from there, but he wouldn't be able to pierce his scales. Instead, Noah chose the incredibly risky option of jumping onto the area above Nightmare's left eye. When Noah landed, he immediately used his free hand to grab one of Nightmare scales, and he lodged his feet into spaces in between the scales. Nightmare began to furiously shake his head to throw Noah off. After a small while, Noah took a large gamble by placing his free hand under the eyelid of Nightmare, and he took one of his feet and placed it under where his hand was. It was at this point that Nightmare realized what Noah was trying to do, and stopped shaking his head, focusing on trying to close his eye. Noah had to use all of his strength to prevent this from happening, and he drew his spear back in preparation to stab it into Nightmare's eye. Nightmare resumed violently shaking his head, but it was to no avail. Noah's spear shot forward and stabbed deeply into Nightmare's eye. Nightmare's attempts to stop Noah all vanished, and he released his loudest, most agonizing roar yet. The spear went deep enough to barely pierce into Nightmare's brain, but it wasn't enough to kill him. Noah let go of his spear, and he grabbed a scale above his eyes. He lifted up his leg that wasn't being used, and he used it to push his spear even deeper into Nightmare's brain. Once, the spear went completely into Nightmare's eye, Nightmare's roar was abruptly cut off, and he collapsed to the ground, twitching. Noah hopped off Nightmare's head, and took his knife out to cut out his spear from Nightmare's eye.

After a small bit of cutting, Noah managed to free his spear from Nightmare's eye. He looked at all the black blood that was covering his spear for a small while before cleaning it all off. Once he did, he sheathed the spear, and he walked over to the remains of the legendary spear. He looked down at the remains, and he thought, 'I should take this with me as a reminder of what my life was, and a reminder of what my actions caused.' When he finished that thought, he picked up the broken spear, and he put it in his bag. He looked back over to Nightmare with indescribable emotion on his face. He was currently feeling a combination of happiness due to his success, and sadness due to his failures. After a small bit, he began to walk out of the cave. He didn't take any of the gold, or treasures that were lying around. He walked through the entrance hall, and he paused to look down at the corpse of William with the same indescribable emotion on his face. After a small sigh, Noah resumed his solemn walk out of the cave. When he reached the slide, Noah began to slowly climb up, further exercising his already tired muscles.

Once Noah reached the top of the slide, he stumbled out of the cave and looked towards the sun. The sun was in its midmorning position and Noah took note of this, thinking, 'It's midmorning, what do I do next?'
