This was one of Ye Zhen's benefits after participating in Moonlight Hall's biannual competition; martial artists of Moonlight Hall who receive an upper-class monthly allowance could freely enter and leave the Main Temple without having to report, and except for the forbidden lands, they could move about at any time.
As for why the guard showed such a stern look, it most likely had to do with Ye Zhen's status as the chief of Moonlight Hall! The chief of any division within the Divine Sect held a significant status and was highly respected.
