Chapter 303 - 299) The God Gene 2

Lastly, there's the Legendary level—a name used for lack of a better one. In a sense, it's the highest level a being can reach before touching the divine. But it's not just about power: it also implies an exceptional achievement, a feat that will make you a legend among your peers.

A legendary-level being is one who has surpassed the limits of a great wizard in some way—sometimes in magical power, yes, but not necessarily. It's not required to have more raw magic than everyone else; what matters is reaching enlightenment in a specific field, crossing a boundary others can only imagine.

Clear examples of this level would be Dumbledore, Voldemort, Grindelwald, Morgana, Herpo the Foul, or even the four founders (at least in theory). All of them combined overwhelming magical power with personal development in a particular area. On the other hand, someone like Nicolas Flamel is also considered legendary—but not because of magical strength, rather for his alchemical achievements: creating the Philosopher's Stone earned him that status. He reached an almost mystical level in his discipline, though he became stagnant after living so long thanks to the Elixir of Immortality.

Snape could also reach that level in the field of potions. He lacks one final great feat, a culmination that would give him that definitive enlightenment, but he's very close, constantly brushing up against the edge.

In truth, there are many legendary wizards. Some are well-known, others not, because the legendary level is so diverse that there can't be a simple classification. For example, Ekrizdis—the supposed creator of Azkaban—would be one of them. His existence is shrouded in mystery, but the mere fact that he created that dark prison is enough proof, assuming no one else was involved.

What's interesting is that within the legendary level, there are huge differences. Since there's no higher level, everyone who reaches it falls into the same category—even if one is far stronger than another. You could have a "Legendary Level 1" and a "Legendary Level 299." Dumbledore and Voldemort are in this level, but that doesn't mean they're equals. They're close, yes, but if someone appeared a hundred times stronger than Voldemort, they'd still be "legendary"—simply because there's nothing above it… except divinity, of course, which, as explained, is a separate path reserved for a lucky few.

As for me… I'd say I'm not exactly legendary yet. As a wizard, maybe I've reached the level of a great wizard. In other skills, I'm in a similar state, and only by combining them all could I claim to have reached a legendary state. Individually, none of them quite reach that level. Perhaps by fully enhancing some of the sins, I might temporarily attain it. In fact, when I first obtained those essences, I reached a legendary peak… though based on what I've felt since, maybe I brushed against something even greater.

I should also clarify that this classification applies solely to wizards and their relationship with magic. It doesn't include muggles or magical creatures, whose measurement systems might be completely different.

Now then, we also know about the God level, which isn't really a level per se, but a special and additional classification.

It's a very particular case, since it doesn't follow the linear progression of the previous levels. Divinity can manifest at any stage: one can be an apprentice and divine, or legendary and divine at the same time.

And that's because divinity isn't simply about "having more power." It's something completely different. It's the ability to be in tune with, and even manipulate, the fundamental rules of existence.

That's why, even if the most powerful legendary wizard were to face a weak god, they could still lose if that god mastered the rule that counters their magic. It wouldn't matter how strong they are in raw terms… they could be completely ineffective, or even unable to affect their opponent at all.

The power Elise unleashed a moment ago wasn't divine power per se, but rather her overflowing energy sparked by the divine spark temporarily awakened through the activation of the God Gene. There's still a long way to go before Elise becomes a true divine entity, with her own power, a real manifestation of divinity.

Moreover, not all gods are equal. Some are weak, having only awakened a small part of a specific divinity and unable to go any further. That becomes their ceiling, their limit.

But that's something for the future. The God Gene that awakened in Elise merely improved her potential, giving her a unique chance to go farther than anyone… although there's still no guarantee she'll succeed. As for me, I hope with all my heart that she does, and I'll do everything I can to help her reach it.

Before leaving the tower, I also discovered something important: the reason why that thing desired Tonks and me so intensely. It was reaching what we might call the bottleneck of its conditions, that critical point it needed to surpass to try and awaken the God Gene. The problem was that no matter how much it grew, evolved, or enhanced its PSI power, it couldn't take that final step. Until it saw us.

Our magic… was different. Radically different from the PSI it had perfected over so long. It wanted to integrate us, fuse our magic with its own, to evolve it, to break that limiter. And according to the archmage, if it had succeeded in that fusion, it might have truly had a shot at awakening the gene. But as said before, a chance doesn't guarantee success.

While my clone was absorbing all this information, I remained by Elise's side, holding and comforting her as I explained what I had discovered. However, she seemed lost, confused, not fully understanding what I was telling her.

At that moment, several people approached the crater. They were the residents of the fief—not NPCs. Lily, Petunia, Andra, Eileen, Andromeda, and Tonks. Gemma didn't come; she stayed behind, protecting herself out of fear that something might harm our unborn daughter. She preferred to stay sheltered and wait for news from the others.

They all came running, worried, asking from a distance what had happened.

"Calm down, nothing happened," I said, raising a hand to reassure them.

"What happened, Red?" asked Tonks, looking at the massive crater.

"We saw a flash of light and then BOOM!" added Lily, still concerned.

"It's alright. It was just… something incredible. I'll tell you the full story later," I replied, not wanting to get into a long explanation right then. Elise was nauseous, and loud noises bothered her. "You can all go back to what you were doing. I'll…"

"It's... fine... talk to... them... I... will go... to... the forest..." Elise interrupted me with a weak voice.

She still wasn't feeling quite right. The noise bothered her, and seeing the mess she'd caused—along with the memories of having hurt me—made her feel worse. She wanted to go to the forest, like she always did. There, the silence calmed her.

"It's okay, I'll take you..." (Rojo)

"She spoke?!!!" several shouted at the same time.

I turned around, confused by their shocked expressions, not understanding what they meant. But then I noticed that their eyes weren't fixed on me, but on Elise. Something clicked in my mind.

"Elise?" I asked, feeling a jolt of surprise.

"What?" she replied.

And then I truly noticed it. I could hear her voice in my mind, as always... but also with my ears.

"You're talking! But talking in human! Like me, like everyone else. You're not neighing or making those equine sounds."

"R-really?" she asked, visibly confused, but this time noticing that the words had come out of her lips.

Her voice was slow, a bit hoarse, like someone who hadn't spoken in a long time. But the tone was unmistakable. The same one I'd always heard inside my head. A calm, soft voice… that now projected into the real world.

I realized I had gotten so used to hearing her voice mentally that I no longer noticed the equine sounds she made when we communicated. And I think she had started to ignore them too. That's why it had gone unnoticed… until now.

It was a huge surprise to discover that Elise could speak directly, without difficulty. Even more shocking was that she herself realized it at that moment, trying to articulate words and sounds intentionally. She confessed she didn't know how she was doing it—it just came out instinctively. She seemed to grasp our language naturally, but when I ran a few tests, I noticed her understanding of the language came from our bond. She had learned the words I used without realizing it, absorbing them passively every time we communicated mentally.

Most of the girls present were stunned to see me talking with a unicorn. This time, without telepathy or guesses. Whenever they witnessed our interactions before, it seemed odd—like I was a crazy person seriously talking to a dog. But now they saw it with their own eyes. I didn't need to convince them that Elise understood me or that we had deep conversations… now they knew for sure.

Tonks, in particular, seemed uncomfortable. She clearly remembered how, when I told her about my bond with Elise, she called me a degenerate lunatic, accusing me of practicing bestiality. But now, hearing how we spoke, she felt a bit stupid. She realized Elise wasn't "just an animal" but a creature with intelligence comparable to hers. This revelation made her question how many other creatures considered "beasts" actually possessed a similar level of consciousness and intelligence—and whether the Ministry should reconsider its classification system between Beasts and Beings.

I had many more questions to answer now, so I decided to leave a clone with the girls while my real self took Elise to the archmage's tower to run more tests. Andra came with me, as always, my loyal assistant. Eileen, seeing everything was under control and her wife no longer present, quietly returned home.

Once in the tower, I went straight to the Chair of Lineages. Since I awakened the god gene, the chair had evolved: it leveled up and its functions expanded and improved, even allowing a temporary fusion with the Identification Table, thereby increasing its accuracy, with a biological identification level that's the average between both artifacts. I thought I should use it more often to continue empowering it.

The good thing about the instruments in the archmage's tower is that they aren't ordinary. Even if the god gene were fully active, tests could be done here without any issue.

The analysis results were, at the very least, shocking:
