Mauve stood outside with Jael as the physician and midwife arrived. She didn't have to do this, and Jael had tried to stop her, but she wasn't having it. When he saw he couldn't convince her otherwise, he decided to join her to receive their guests.
They stood at the top of the stairs as the carriage slowly pulled up. The carriage rider was a vampire. Mauve recognized him, but she didn't really know his name. As the carriage stopped, she took a step forward, and Jael followed her until they both got to the bottom of the stairs.
The door opened, and a young woman stepped out first. She wasn't too young but younger than Mauve had expected for a midwife. The woman looked dazed and scared, and her eyes scanned the area before her gaze settled on Mauve, then lowered to her stomach. The physician stepped out next. He was visibly older, with white hair scattered across his head and stubble. He was also short and held a briefcase.
