Chapter 73 - Chapter 73 - The Threat is Coming.

[Chapter Size: 2700 Words.]

Third Person POV.

Westeros.

...

...

All of King's Landing was shocked by the announcement of Viserys Targaryen's execution, set to take place in a few days. They even completely forgot about the arrival of the new Hand of the King, as everyone was focused on the fact that the last "surviving Dragon" of the old bloodline, after more than 17 years of hiding in Essos since the rebellion, was now about to die, effectively ending the Targaryen male line.

The people talked of nothing else. Not only the common folk but also the nobles and even houses surrounding the Crownlands began to mobilize quickly to witness the execution. Prominent houses in the region, like the Velaryons, also came in person with their neighbors. They had once served House Targaryen and wanted to see Rhaegar's younger brother.

And so it happened. Everyone gathered in a massive crowd in front of the Great Sept of Baelor. The city's nobles were present alongside the commoners, while Robert Baratheon wore a gleeful smile. At his side, Ned Stark kept a furrowed expression, not so much because of Viserys' fate but because of what he had been uncovering in recent days.

Ned had never imagined the realm to be so deeply buried in debt. The crown owed not only to certain lords, like Tywin Lannister of Casterly Rock, but also to foreign institutions such as the Iron Bank. The debt was colossal, which placed Robert firmly in the Lannisters' grasp. Tywin could solve all the kingdom's financial problems, but this would grant his house immense influence—something Ned could not accept, given his disdain for the Lannisters.

Moreover, Ned discovered that his old friend lived extravagantly, not much differently than what he had seen in Winterfell. Robert spent coin after coin on feasts, whores, wine, and constant tournaments. Meanwhile, the city began to suffer. The people were starving, lacked clean water or basic care, and lived in increasingly desperate conditions. Ned had even argued with Robert, but the king simply didn't care.

"Deal with it yourself, Ned. I'm going to drink and eat something," Robert would say, ending the conversation and leaving Ned grim. He was beginning to realize that his friend was not the king he had hoped for.

Now, his thoughts were interrupted by a cart arriving, with someone yelling as they were dragged out.

"Get me out of here! Release me! I am the heir to the Iron Throne! You have no right to do this!" Viserys shouted as he was taken to the steps. He was being held tightly by the guards, struggling and trying to break free, just as he had in the throne room.

"Bring the dragon. He's nothing but a chicken now," Robert mocked, laughing. "Just get it over with!"

The crowd didn't hesitate; no one truly cared for the Targaryens as Viserys believed they would while he was in Essos. The people began hurling insults at him. Some even threw objects, enraging him. When something hit his face, he glared at the crowd with fury.

"Who did that?! Who dares attack the true king?! I swear I'll kill you all!" he roared, growing more infuriated.

The more he shouted, the more the crowd grew enraged, pelting him with more objects. The guards had to shield themselves as well while dragging him to the end of the steps. They hauled him to the execution platform, where they forced him to kneel before everyone.

The High Septon approached at that moment, proclaiming loudly,

"O people of King's Landing! We are gathered here for the execution of the last male member of the cursed House Targaryen."

He began his speech, and Ned couldn't help but grimace. He knew another Targaryen was still alive, though he kept this information secret.

As the High Septon continued speaking, Viserys, awaiting his execution, cursed and hurled insults. In response, one of the guards struck him on the head to silence him. The crowd did not stop jeering and booing. All the nobility was present, including Ned's daughters. Arya watched the scene with animated curiosity, eager to witness her first execution, while Sansa appeared uneasy. Ned hadn't wanted his daughters to be there, but since the entire court was attending, he couldn't prevent it.

"In the end, Viserys will be executed by order of His Majesty. Please, King Robert, proceed." The High Septon paused, stepping aside for Robert to take the moment.

Robert Baratheon stepped forward with an authoritative expression and began to speak:

"I, as Protector of the Seven Kingdoms, Robert Baratheon, sentence Viserys Targaryen to execution! Bring me his head!"

He thundered the words as the executioner, Ilyn Payne, approached with an enormous sword.

Viserys saw the gleaming blade and, for the first time, seemed to realize that he was truly about to die. His years of dreams, his grand declarations about reclaiming Westeros, all would end in that instant. He tried to stand, but the guards brutally forced him back down, positioning his head on the execution block.

With his eyes wide with rage and despair, he watched as the sword was raised. In a final desperate cry, he shouted to all who were watching:

"I am the king of Westeros!"

But his words were cut short by the blade as it came down, severing his head from his body. His expression of shock and fury remained etched on his face as his head rolled to the feet of the king. Robert let out a satisfied laugh.

"One less dragon spawn!" he declared, visibly pleased.

The crowd erupted into cheers and applause, celebrating the death of Viserys. Many watched with delight as the severed head of the last male Targaryen fell to the ground.

After the execution, everyone began to return to the Red Keep, where a council meeting was quickly convened. The primary issue now was the search for the last Targaryen woman, a dangerous situation since she could bear new heirs, and the identity of the mysterious man who had taken Daenerys.

"Who is this man? How did he manage to defeat Khal Drogo and disappear?" many questioned.

Rumors began to swirl, including some absurd theories. Some nobles suggested that Ned Stark himself might be conspiring to restore the Targaryens to power using his bastard.

"That's ridiculous!" exclaimed Robert, cutting off any further discussion on the matter. "If anyone dares to cast suspicion on my Hand again, they will be imprisoned!"

At the same time, letters were sent to all regions of the Seven Kingdoms. The orders were clear: any man with black hair, tall stature, and violet eyes, or any news about Daenerys Targaryen, should be immediately reported to the crown.

And so, the hunt for the last Targaryen and the mysterious man began to spread across Westeros.

The Martells, Tyrells, Lannisters, along with the people of the Stormlands, the Vale, and the North, had strange and varying thoughts about the reports they were receiving. Many letters were sent not only across Westeros but also to the Free Cities of Essos. The people of Westeros found it a bit exaggerated—the idea that the same person could be in two or three places in such a short period seemed absurd.

Even the maesters advised their lords that this was likely some kind of mistake. Nonetheless, everyone decided to remain vigilant, searching for a person with the described characteristics. They were looking for a Stark with violet eyes, as there was a rumor that Jon Snow was a son of Ashara Dayne.

At Dragonstone, Stannis, who had fled King's Landing, seemed somewhat frustrated by his brother's letter and the request for him to return to the capital urgently.

"What do you think this is about?" Stannis asked calmly, directing the question to the red priestess standing before the flames.

"My lord has given me no answers regarding this, my lord..." Melisandre replied, trying to discern anything in the flames, but her god seemed unwilling to reveal answers about these rumors.

In the North, Robb was in Winterfell, immersed in grim thoughts. His mother had left the castle, heading to King's Landing after the assassination attempt on Bran. Initially, she had claimed that Jon Snow, her half-brother, might be behind it, aiming to destroy the family, but that didn't seem right. Other evidence had begun to surface regarding the Valyrian steel dagger used in the attack.

Catelyn was seeking answers, secretly traveling to King's Landing in disguise. Meanwhile, Robb was overseeing Winterfell, always vigilant. He feared that his bastard brother might still be lurking, waiting for the right moment to strike, as Jon had disappeared a moon ago. However, what truly surprised him were the news arriving from the capital.

"So the king ordered this written? The bastard passed through here one day and appeared in Essos the next? Was he drunk or something?" Theon commented sarcastically, eliciting a faint smile from Robb.

"Be careful who you mock, Theon. It's unwise to ridicule the king," Robb warned. "But what they say is that someone very similar to Jon Snow appeared in Essos, took Daenerys Targaryen, and vanished shortly after, leaving no trace. There might be some truth to it, but even so, we must remain vigilant in the North."

In the end, Robb sighed. He had too many thoughts. Although he wouldn't admit it, he cared for Jon, even though his mother had always influenced him with her words about Jon wanting to steal Winterfell. He had been shocked to hear from his parents that Jon had simply struck his mother and beaten his father in his solar, without anyone hearing the commotion.

"To think there were rumors from the Wall... Could the bastard have become some sort of sorcerer? If that's true, maybe mocking him isn't such a good idea anymore..." Theon remarked with his usual sarcasm.

"I don't know..." Robb muttered. He still remembered the fear on his father's face when he left his solar, injured. Difficult and dark times were beginning to loom over House Stark, and he hoped they would pass quickly...

In the far North, at the Wall, Tyrion Lannister was enjoying his time visiting the massive ice structure that had stood for over 8,000 years. The conversations there revolved around recent events, from deserters claiming to have seen the Others to the mysterious man who, according to reports, used sorcery.

"So, you were saying this sorcerer lifted you into the air? Like, without using his hands or anything?" Tyrion asked a young member of the Night's Watch with curiosity.

"Yes, I swear! Nobody believes me, but I saw it! He simply raised his hand from a distance, and I had no control over my body anymore. It was terrifying. He did it to all of us. You can ask anyone who was with me," the young man replied, his voice trembling with fear as he recalled the incident.

Tyrion regarded the young man with a mix of skepticism and fascination. "Well, it's a bit hard to believe in magic; after all, we don't see many sorcerers around, and those who claim to be usually turn out to be charlatans pulling cheap tricks. But what intrigues me is his appearance. You said he was tall, with violet eyes and black hair?" Tyrion asked, intrigued.

He was beginning to connect the dots. It was clear he had heard about the connection between the man who appeared in Winterfell and the one who confronted the Night's Watch. Both seemed mysterious and frightening, which only deepened Tyrion's interest.

'Certainly, he is not ordinary,' Tyrion thought. A man who acted so peculiarly in Winterfell, mocked the king, confronted Lord Stark, and even made his brother, one of the most renowned swordsmen in the Seven Kingdoms, seem cornered and frightened... 'Something is very wrong here.'

Tyrion's curiosity grew as he heard more about the possible Jon Snow.

"Lannister!" A voice suddenly called out behind him.

Tyrion turned to see that it was Lord Commander Mormont. The Lord Commander gestured for Tyrion to follow him to his solar. Tyrion didn't hesitate and followed the commander, curious about what he had to say, leaving the young man behind.

"Well, I've received some news from King's Landing and would like to share it with you. Perhaps you can give me your opinion on it," Mormont remarked as he sat in his chair behind the desk, having led Tyrion from the Great Hall of Castle Black to his solar.

"Of course, everyone needs the opinion of a dwarf!" Tyrion quipped, but the Lord Commander didn't find it amusing and continued.

"Well, I can't say I'm not surprised, and even somewhat pleased, to know that my son received a royal pardon after taking Viserys Targaryen as a prisoner for the king. What's more, he renounced his own inheritance, leaving my niece as the heir to House Mormont. That brings me some relief," Mormont commented, his tone a mix of relief and concern.

Though he knew his son had committed a terrible crime, the news of his pardon brought a flicker of happiness, even if he didn't fully show it. However, the main subject was something else.

"Wait, Viserys Targaryen? He was taken to King's Landing?" Tyrion asked, clearly startled by the information.

"Not just that," Mormont continued. "He must already be dead. The letter said he was to be executed a few days after it was sent..." It would take weeks for a letter from King's Landing to reach them.

"That's... impressive," Tyrion commented, thoughtful and stunned at the same time.

"In any case, there's another letter with a royal demand. It speaks about the mysterious person my men encountered beyond the Wall, who, somehow, was also in Winterfell shortly afterward," Mormont began. "My son reported that, before capturing Viserys, his sister Daenerys Targaryen had been promised in marriage to Khal Drogo, the Horse Lord. But a mysterious man, with black hair, nearly two meters tall, and violet eyes, appeared, challenged the Khal, and killed him. Afterward, he took the girl and disappeared."

Mormont paused, observing Tyrion, who widened his eyes, clearly surprised.

"You're saying Jon Snow killed Khal Drogo?" Tyrion asked, incredulous.

"I'm not saying anything. That's what the king believes, and the reports seem to confirm it. Everything suggests that the same person who was seen here, north of the Wall, more than a moon ago, appeared in Winterfell days later and was then seen in Essos. Do you believe these rumors?" Mormont asked.

Tyrion shook his head, thoughtful. "That's a bit hard to believe, don't you think? Maybe he has a dragon or something," Tyrion joked with a faint, somewhat lost smile, unsure what else to say.

Mormont sighed deeply, maintaining a serious expression. "We don't know what we're dealing with. But the king reiterated his orders: anyone matching these characteristics, or any information about the Targaryen girl, must be reported."

He paused, seemingly reflecting on something. 'Whoever this person is, they arrived in Winterfell or possibly Essos, but came from north of the Wall... almost as if they had emerged from the Lands of Always Winter.'

Mormont had no idea that the same man was already back in the North, hundreds of miles away, beginning to train an army of free folk to invade the South as a silent threat. By the time the Seven Kingdoms realized it, it would be too late.

"In any case, I'll need to write a report about this. If you could help me with the information you saw in Winterfell, that would be great," Mormont said as he stood.

"Now, I'm going to see Benjen. I'm sure he'll want to hear about this as well. After all, he's been quite agitated since learning that his nephew, missing for over eight years, returned in such a chaotic manner," he added before leaving the room.

Even Maester Aemon would be surprised to hear about the death of his distant relative. Perhaps more saddened than surprised.
