[Chapter Size: 2100 Words.]
Third Person POV.
Kingsland.
...
...
" We shouldn't be here," the man said nervously in the middle of the night.
"Do you think I wanted to be here? We have no choice. Orders are orders. Anything suspicious in this area must be reported to the battalion commander," another man replied, his tone equally nervous.
They were two city guards who had been walking for over an hour through the noble district. Both seemed deeply shaken by recent events. First, the death of Janos Slynt, which shocked not only the soldiers but even the court. And he died along with three dozen city guards, killed by a stranger who, according to reports, moved faster than any human.
And, on the same night, the monster appeared in King's Landing.
They described it as a wolf-like creature that walked like a man. Muscular, covered in white fur, and taller than Gregor Clegane himself—the Mountain. They called it the Giant Werewolf.
And so it began hunting its victims. City guards were mercilessly slaughtered. Despite being mere soldiers doing their duty, they were attacked for trying to confront it. There had been no civilian casualties so far. However, the massacre created a bloodbath in various parts of the city, especially on the Street of Silk.
The entire city was terrified. The guard had become ineffective, and rumors spread quickly. Many said the Werewolf was on the people's side.
"That monster is protecting us after everything they've done!" some shouted.
Others, like the septon himself, however, condemned it as some kind of demon that should be eradicated as a wish of the Seven.
And its actions had consequences. Many criminals took advantage of the situation, as the guards began patrolling less, to commit crimes. The monster's presence had weakened the guard's effectiveness.
But this disorder did not last long. Soon, the wolf stopped attacking only the city guard and began hunting rapists and murderers on the Street of Silk. In the past few days, the screams of criminals had been heard, their bodies tossed into ditches after being torn apart.
This made crime stop completely. After all, there was no courage when the monster was lurking—it simply killed all the guilty in its path.
Obviously, entire groups were formed by the king's order to try to contain it, but they were ineffective. The creature was smart and avoided direct confrontations. However, if provoked, it attacked with brutal force. Its greatest feat was killing ten men at the same time before vanishing like a ghost. This only increased the terror and legend surrounding it.
No one knew exactly where it had come from, but theories began to circulate. And one of them was particularly curious.
A symbol began to be associated with the city folk—the figure of a giant wolf. Many witnesses said the creature strongly resembled this animal.
Soon, rumors started to spread:
"The giant wolf is the materialization of the Old Gods, condemning the king and queen for imprisoning a Stark!"
This quickly fueled even more rumors about Joffrey Baratheon being a bastard.
The Giant Werewolf seemed to affirm this theory with its mere existence. To many, it was a divine sign that the gods were taking revenge, hunting the enemies of the Starks.
The legend had become so popular that even the streets seemed emptier at night. Fear dominated King's Landing.
People whispered in alleys and taverns:
"He is a vengeful spirit."
"He came to punish the traitors."
"What does this creature really want?"
Even within the city watch, the atmosphere was tense. As the two guards continued patrolling the noble district, one of them glanced at his companion and murmured, trying to contain his nervousness:
"The rumors about the current king being a bastard of King Robert I... they're getting stronger."
"Quiet! What are you saying? What if someone hears? We'll lose our tongues!" the other exclaimed and continued.
"Did you hear? I was told King Joffrey ripped out the tongues of eight bards and cut off the hands of another ten. Today, they imprisoned fifty suspects for siding with the Stark bastard."
"I think you're right... But about the bastard, I've heard rumors saying that he himself is the monster, transforming to take revenge on his father."
The guard beside him remained silent for a moment before answering hesitantly.
"You think he can transform? That should be impossible!"
The second guard merely sighed.
"Either way, let's stop thinking about these things and continue our patrol. That monster has never appeared in this district, so we're safe here."
He stated this with confidence, but soon after, they kept walking, their torches casting long beams of light behind them. Their shadows stretched ahead into the darkness. However, they soon realized they were not alone.
A shadow, larger than their own, emerged, imposing itself between them.
Immediately, the guards froze, paralyzed by fear. Behind them, a massive creature watched with bloodthirsty eyes.
That was the last thing they remembered before blood began to spray in all directions. The monster's claws tore through their armor and bodies with ease, cutting them down before they could react. The two fell to the ground, lifeless, as the creature began to walk the streets.
Then, with an agile, astonishing leap, it launched itself against a window five meters high and quickly scaled the roof. Now, it moved across the city, jumping from rooftop to rooftop, searching for more guards.
From above, it could see large groups advancing throughout the city, their torches lighting up the streets below. Entire squads of 30 to 50 guards were hunting it down, but it wasn't ready to face them yet. It needed to terrify them first, to make them believe that a large group could contain it.
For now, it avoided major battles, attacking only small groups of two to five guards and eliminating them swiftly. A trail of death spread across the city, and there was no one to stop it.
Days passed, and the legend of the White Wolf—the monster, as many called it—continued to grow. Every morning, more and more guards were found dead, and terror took hold of the city.
The men responsible for security were becoming increasingly frightened. Some, overwhelmed by fear, began refusing to continue patrolling, and the grip of the crown over the city started to weaken.
Meanwhile, Cersei hurried through the halls of the Red Keep, her expression heavy with concern. When she reached her destination, she shoved the door open forcefully, startling the person inside more than she had intended.
Her cousin, Lancel Lannister, stood there, cornered and visibly nervous. His eyes met hers before he sighed, trying to maintain his composure.
"I thought it was that thing..." he murmured, feeling the weight of the queen's gaze upon him.
"Are you still afraid of that creature?" Cersei scoffed, rolling her eyes.
Lancel turned his gaze toward the city, visibly shaken. He was so nervous and desperate that not even the queen felt like fucking him, which she found deeply frustrating and infuriating.
"You don't understand, Cersei..." Lancel murmured, looking at her cautiously. "I heard what's happening... The monster is here. I'm sure he could come for me and kill me at any moment!"
Lancel trembled as he spoke, completely consumed by fear.
Cersei looked at him, crossing her arms in frustration.
"Tell me exactly what he looks like. I want to know every detail. We need to destroy this thing—it's causing us too many problems!" she exclaimed, impatient.
Lancel hesitated, averting his gaze.
"I... I don't know if I can talk about it. What if he comes after me because of it?" he murmured, shaking even more.
Cersei stepped closer, her voice low and threatening.
"You better tell me exactly what you saw in the forest... or else you will 'disappear'. If you don't tell me everything now, I will personally throw you out that window, and it will just look like an accident." She leaned in closer, her tone icy.
"I'll say it was an accident. That you committed suicide. I'm sure the king will understand perfectly. He won't find it strange at all."
Lancel swallowed hard upon hearing those words.
"Alright... I'll talk." He gave in, still trembling. His voice was weak, heavy with fear, as he began to recount his worst memory—the moment the monster had terrified him.
Cersei listened intently, her sharp gaze analyzing every word. However, nothing in his story seemed to provide a definitive answer to her problem.
"I see..." She sighed, not hiding her dissatisfaction.
Without saying another word, she left the room.
She walked through the corridors until she reached the entrance of the council chamber, where two guards were posted. As she approached, she immediately recognized them as members of her son's Kingsguard.
"Is Joffrey inside?" she asked.
Sandor Clegane remained silent, but the other Kingsguard nodded.
"Yes, he is in there with Lord Varys."
"Good. Let me in."
As she approached the door, she began to hear Joffrey's furious shouting from inside the chamber.
"I want them all arrested! They all must die! Let them pay for their crimes!"
Joffrey's shrill voice echoed through the hall.
"Inform the court that cutting tongues is not enough at this moment!" he exclaimed, with the fury of someone who had completely lost control.
First, the theft of the Iron Throne had already left him shaken enough. He should have sat on it for the first time as king, but when he tried, the throne had vanished. This was an unbearable humiliation.
Then came the rumors that he was a bastard...
Cersei entered the chamber and stepped forward, her domineering presence silencing the counselors.
"Son, we need to talk about this."
Joffrey turned to her, his face red with rage and frustration.
"Mother, they are calling me a !" he shouted, his voice filled with fury and sadness.
The melancholic tone revealed how much it affected him. Then, suddenly, he rushed toward her and embraced her tightly.
"I know, my son. The people will pay for everything. We already had this conversation this morning. Why don't you go to your room and rest?"
Cersei asked in a soft voice, trying to calm Joffrey. The young king sighed in the end, reluctant, but eventually left the room.
As soon as he was gone, Cersei turned her gaze to Varys. Now, only the two of them remained there.
"Do you see the situation we are in? The more time passes, the more dangerous everything becomes. That monster is on the loose, and people are starting to call my son a bastard. Tell me, do you have any solution for this?"
She asked seriously, crossing her arms.
Varys sighed before responding:
"We are not only dealing with a bad situation inside the city. The North is marching south at this very moment. Moreover, Stannis Baratheon has also summoned his men. A war will begin soon."
Cersei furrowed her brow, impatient.
"That is true, but we need to deal with the situation here first. My son is the king now. He needs to rule, and for that, King's Landing must be under control. We need to restore order."
Varys nodded, reflecting for a moment before suggesting:
"Perhaps there is a way to ease all of this, Your Majesty."
Cersei raised an eyebrow.
"And what would that be?"
Varys leaned slightly and whispered:
"A public trial of Eddard Stark might ease the tension. If, somehow, we manage to make him confess that he invented everything... that Joffrey is the true heir to the Iron Throne and that he acted out of ambition in trying to take the throne..."
He paused briefly before continuing:
"Then, as punishment, Eddard would be sent to the Night's Watch. This would silence the rumors within the city and, moreover, make the North retreat without a war breaking out. After all, Robert Baratheon's brothers are also making their moves, and Stannis has sent letters to everyone saying that Joffrey is the product of incest."
Cersei remained silent for a moment, considering the proposal.
It was an astute solution. If Eddard confessed, she could control the rumors. And even if that monster appeared, a crowd of soldiers would be ready to face it.
She turned her gaze to Varys and slowly nodded.
"This idea seems... useful to me."
A discreet smile appeared on the eunuch's lips.
"Then, I believe I may take my leave now, correct?" Varys murmured cautiously.
"Yes, you may go."
Cersei replied without taking her eyes off him. Varys gave a discreet bow and left the room in silence.
