Cherreads

Chapter 15 - No.1 hit

The morning air at Victoria High School (VHS) was thick with the scent of caramelized sugar and deep-fried dough, a sweet victory that defied Cherry's cynical expectations. She had walked into the bake sale assuming that "money-making for the school" was just another tedious chore on the long list of high school banalities. Instead, she found a rhythm she actually liked.

The Chemistry of Success

Everything had clicked with a precision that felt almost cinematic. Despite Cherry's initial anxiety about running low on ingredients, she and Monalisa moved in a silent, practiced sync. From the mechanical click of the oven dials to the sharp ping of the timers, they were a unified front.

When the flours were finally whisked together and the dough hit the hot oil, the result was nothing short of legendary: golden-brown doughnuts topped with a vibrant explosion of sprinkles that seemed to draw the crowd in like a magnet.

An Unexpected Encounter

"Hello..." a voice drifted from behind them, smooth and intentional.

Monalisa turned first, but Cherry followed quickly, her heart skipping a beat as she recognized the woman standing there.

"Miss Clara. A big fan-girl of Island Girl," Ms. Clara announced, her smile wide and unwavering as she maintained intense eye contact with both of them.

The air felt thin. For weeks, it had been a whispered rumor that Cherry's book was a hit, but hearing it from an authority figure made it feel dangerously real. Numbers didn't lie, but in a government-enrolled school like VHS, "making it out" was a slim prospect.

Cherry's mind raced with a familiar Nigerian skepticism. If the book was truly a hit, why weren't film houses calling? Why weren't sponsors knocking down her door? In a school that funded basketball courts while her "crappy" novel gathered digital dust, a local hit felt like a dead end.

Power Plays and Louboutins

"How come you never told me about her? And I love your outfit!" Ms. Clara said, playfully swatting Cherry's arm. The gesture was a distraction, pulling Cherry out of her spiral as she watched the teacher gravitate toward Monalisa.

It was hard not to stare. Monalisa was a presence—a "badass" in the truest sense. She looked stunning, effortless in a sharp business suit that hugged her frame perfectly, anchored by the red-soled lethality of expensive Louboutin pumps.

The bake sale had turned into an unofficial fan club. Single fathers lingered at the stall, buying more doughnuts than they could possibly eat, their eyes drifting to Monalisa's ringless fingers. She was the ultimate top seller, but she refused to stand in the spotlight alone.

"I'm actually Cherry's guidance," Monalisa said, her voice cool and professional as she deflected the praise toward the teenager. "I'm glad we pulled this off. Without her, I don't think it would've turned out a success."

The Bomb Drops

"Cherry has always made the school proud," Ms. Clara beamed, her eyes sparkling with genuine heat. "Nice to meet you, Monalisa. I hope to see you in more parent-student activities."

"She works... she's very busy," Cherry interjected, her protective instincts flaring.

"I think I will try," Monalisa countered with an assuring smile that silenced the protest.

As Ms. Clara prepared to step away, Monalisa expertly wrapped a fresh doughnut for her. They exchanged a handshake—not a casual greeting, but a firm, decisive grip that looked like two titans closing a multi-million-dollar deal.

"I will leave you two then," Ms. Clara said, pausing as she reached the edge of the stall. She turned back, the light catching the red polish on her nails. "And Cherry? That Island Girl story... it hit number one when I woke up this morning."

The words landed like a physical weight. Cherry's lips parted, the air leaving her lungs. Even if she had heard the whispers earlier, the confirmation felt like a beautiful, terrifying explosion.
