Cherreads

Chapter 31 - Mr Rodrick dinner

The air in the boutique had been thick with the scent of new fabric and the frantic energy of two girls reclaiming their futures. Cherry and Sam spent six hours scouring every rack, finally securing the business suits they needed for the Monday interviews. It was a steep price to pay—costing a little more than they'd planned—but with exams finally behind them and only two weeks of school left, the investment felt like a rite of passage.

By the time the evening of the dinner arrived, the transformation was complete. Sam emerged from her house looking every bit the woman she was becoming, her long legs framed by a black midi dress with a delicate X-back design. Amole was already there, leaning against a car that wasn't his usual Lexus. He flipped his wrist to glance at his watch before his eyes locked onto her.

"You look so beautiful tonight," he complimented, his voice low. He kissed her deeply before leading her to the passenger side. Inside, Sam leaned over, straining her neck to kiss him a second time. She was happy, content to live in the moment without the suffocating weight of a "relationship" label.

The Restaurant: A High-Stakes Reunion

The reservation sat on the top floor, overlooking a city that seemed to belong to them for the first time. As they stepped out of the elevator, the room was already humming. Cherry was huddled with her father, Rodrick, questioning his sudden purchase of one of Amole's properties.

"It was going to be a surprise," Rodrick explained with a proud smile. "You should come by Monday after work to see the plan. It's just ten minutes from AL."

Sam joined them, champagne glass in hand, offering a polished hand to Cherry's father. "Nice to finally meet you, Mr. Rodrick."

As the girls excused themselves, the atmosphere shifted. Cherry's eyes darted to the door as Travis walked in, looking striking in a white suit. Without hesitation, she walked into his arms and kissed him passionately, a public declaration that felt as much like a shield as it did an embrace.

"Thanks for coming, I wasn't expecting you," she murmured.

Travis looked around, slightly dazed by the sudden display from the girl who had just gone viral for professing her love for the basketball captain. "What do you think you're doing?" he whispered.

The Mistaken Identity

Cherry led Travis over to her father and Miss Clara, her voice bright with forced confidence. "Hi Dad, hi Clara. Dad, I want you to meet Travis, my boyfriend. I'm working on his story—he's so good in the NBA—"

Rodrick shook his hand heartily, though his eyes were clouded with confusion. "Oh, you are one of the kids that got drafted for the Lakers, I think."

"No, I'm not drafted," Travis corrected gently. "I'm still playing."

"Oh... he's quite a handsome man, Cherry," Rodrick noted, before pulling Travis away to mingle, leaving Clara and Cherry alone. Clara watched Cherry down a full glass of champagne in one go. "Are you okay?" she asked. "I think so," Cherry replied, her voice hollow as she walked away.

The Toast and the Uninvited Guest

Mona eventually called for silence, clicking her cutlery against a flute. "This is a toast for Mr. Rodrick. We all know what happened these past six months. Thank you for supporting him... let's all toast to Rodrick."

Cherry took the mic, her hands trembling as she looked at her scrambled notes. "I believed in my dad," she started, her voice cracking. "We got each other through these years, especially after Mom passed... I woke up one morning and my dad was gone." The room fell into a heavy silence. "There was all type of news about him... my dad is a miracle and I'm happy he's standing in our midst."

The emotional peak was interrupted by the arrival of Alfred. He didn't just enter; he claimed the room, walking straight to Mona and kissing her deeply. Mona's face flushed with a mix of terror and embarrassment.

"Dad, this is the owner of AL magazine," Cherry introduced him.

"Thank you for giving my daughter the opportunity," Rodrick said, shaking the hand of the man who usually only frequented the Met Gala or the Headies.

Confrontations and Revelations

As Cherry tried to pull Travis aside for a private talk, they were intercepted by Mrs. Green. The woman's smile was sharp and unfamiliar.

"I saw the video you did," Mrs. Green said, her eyes scanning Travis with disdain. "And my son told me how he stayed up the whole night with you. You know, it's very wrong not to come say hi, or offer us a seat, but instead walk around with this boy... you were like a child when your father dropped you off for me to babysit."

"I'm sorry, Mrs. Green," Cherry snapped back. "I didn't know you wanted a seat with Alfred. And this is Travis, my boyfriend. That video was the alcohol talking."

Once they were alone, Travis turned to her, his brow furrowed. "Now this is two times you have told someone I'm your boyfriend. What's going on?"

Cherry started to spiral. "Travis, I was drunk last night... I don't love Green—"

"Hold up," Travis cut her off. "I'm not upset with you. I left because my mom was rushed to the hospital. Turns out she's pregnant. I didn't think women got pregnant at forty."

Cherry stood stunned. She had spent the night terrified of his jealousy, only to find he was reeling from family news. "It's not so bad if I'm your boyfriend," he added, kissing her. But as he looked at her, his expression shifted. "Or maybe you love Green but you can't admit it."

"I'm not living in denial," Cherry insisted. "The person I love is you."

Travis sighed, his eyes drifting toward the exit. "Well... I don't know what to say. I was jealous last night, seeing you confess for him. But I have to leave. My mom having a baby when I'm seventeen... it's freaking me out."

The Public Exposure

Back at the table, Mona was checking Alfred for his public display of affection.

"I told you we need to take things slow," she hissed.

"Everyone knows we are together, Mona," Alfred countered, resting a hand on her waist. "You don't read the blogs? Our faces are everywhere. The CEO that dates a detective."

Mona pulled up his website on her phone, her heart sinking as she saw her own face staring back. "You think I'm Savannah? I hate being in the public. We are two different people, Alfred. You have money... I'm just a detective in denim jackets. I can't keep up."

"Soon they will get bored," Alfred promised, pulling her closer. "We're getting on board with the cancer story next week the demand is so high But for tonight... I want you to come to the fundraiser tomorrow. It's very important."

Mona looked at him, then at Rodrick, who was watching them from across the room. She stood on her toes and kissed him back, finally surrendering to the chaos of their public life.
