Minerva turned. "I admit nothing. But if you want to believe I took the money, go ahead. Believe whatever you want. It won't change the fact that the accounts are empty and the evidence is gone."
My blood ran cold. "What do you mean, gone?"
Minerva smiled. It was a terrible smile, cold and triumphant. "Did you really think I would leave incriminating papers in a place where you could find them? I've been preparing for this day for years. The accounts were closed last month. The money has been moved. The documents you have are copies. The originals are ash."
Grandmother Halton stood. "You're lying."
