Behind him, a man's annoyed curse floated through the air, "Digging up my grave just to say a few useless words, believe it or not I'll crawl to the head of your bed in the middle of the night!"
Charlotte shivered involuntarily and her face paled. Kevin glanced at her and chuckled, "He's a horror novelist who occasionally dabbles in screenwriting. He hardly ever steps out the door all year, preferring to stay inside during the day and come out at night, so he likens someone ringing his doorbell to digging his grave. The people here may seem strange, but they are actually very nice."
Charlotte then felt reassured, vaguely sensing that there was another layer of meaning in Kevin's explanation, but since he didn't spell it out, and she couldn't fathom it.
"Ethan, do you still like it here?" Charlotte quickly shifted her focus.
Ethan, perched on his dad's neck, replied without hesitation, "I like it! The uncle from just now gave me a present!"
