Mrs. Zimmerman and Scarlett Zimmerman's faces instantly darkened; they had not expected Jeremy Thompson to be so blunt and to speak his mind.
Saying that Scarlett's coffee was neither disagreeable nor particularly good was, indirectly, a way of saying that he neither disliked nor liked Scarlett herself.
"Jeremy, what do you mean by that?" Scarlett asked, biting the corner of her lip.
"Scarlett, you're a PhD student. You've read more than I have. You should understand what I mean very well," Jeremy leaned back and said indifferently, looking at Scarlett.
"The two of us have had a marriage contract since we were young," Scarlett had to bring up the marriage contract she shared with Jeremy, because they had been separated for too long; and aside from the marriage contract, she had nothing else to hold onto him with.
