Primarily because Gary Smith doesn't trust the Ancestral Toad either. Despite its laziness, it's quite scheming.
If I were to enter and come face-to-face with the Ancestral Toad, it wouldn't miss the opportunity to devour food presented at its doorstep, no matter how lazy it is.
So, he decided to force his way through the Gate of Extremes and took control of the Toad's Gate.
