Cherreads

Chapter 1 - Prologue

Fires raged in the night, enveloping the city in smoke. Cries of fear and anguish broke through the night. The wind was roaring along with a great beast in the sky. It was a dragon.

"Get him out of here," the lord of the manor shouted at one of his servants. "I'll deal with the beast," he proclaimed loudly to the garrison. He was a tall man with handsome facial features. He had high cheek bones, a straight nose and a long mane of brown hair with piercing emerald green eyes.

They knew he was one of the best suited for the task as he was originally a dragon slayer and there was no doubt of that as he stood tall above them wearing a suit comprised of dragon scales overlaid on top of each other the size of dinner plates. That had been his job before he settled down with his wife and had a child. This was no ordinary dragon, however. It was one of the great red dragons of the East, with teeth like swords and claws like spears. It's scales were hard like steel.

Leo Blackwood's gaze softened as he turned to his wife. "I may not survive this. I'm giving you a fighting chance to get out of here with Matilda." His wife retorted, "We're in this together. We swore to each other we'd never leave the other!"

Leo sighed, "I don't have time to argue. The beast needs to die for its crimes against humanity, do you understand me? It's far more powerful than any other dragon I have slain as well, so I may very well die in this encounter and I don't want you around when that happens." His wife nodded sadly before kissing him and leaving with the child. They only got a couple steps out before Leo's wife was enveloped in dragon fire.

He screamed in absolute anguish and rage at what had happened, but he regained his senses enough to see his child was still alive. The servant had stopped to look at the melted slag and stone left behind where her mistress had just been standing just a moment ago. Leo screamed, "Get my son out of here, Matilda! Go now while I deal with the beast!"

As the servant left, Leo calmed his breathing ever so slightly and closed his eyes. A white dragon galloped beside him and lowered down so he could slide onto the saddle. Leo reached down and grabbed a great lance before the white dragon took flight. The great red dragon tried to impose it's will on the white dragon, but it failed in the end because it would only serve one master and he was coming for the one who stole his wife from him.

As Leo got closer, his lance glowed with power. It pulsated between red, green and white as he gathered both his own power and the power of all the dragons he had slain. As soon as the great red dragon saw the attack Leo was building up it began to prepare it's own. The dragon's chest swelled with superheated air and it pushed out blue and white flames swirling around each other. Leo's attack sent out a beam of pure energy with neither attack winning in the end, neither cancelling the other.

As soon as the attack had begun, it ended just as abruptly with both combatants testing each other. The entire city below had been blasted apart by the sheer shockwaves of power from above. It hit the landscape below crushing it down into the ground. The forests around the city had been set ablaze. Leo only hoped that Matilda had done as she needed to. He was beginning to tire fighting the dragon and didn't know how much longer he could last.

The great red dragon was in roughly the same shape, never having fought a warrior of Leo's calibre before itself. Every time it would try to retreat, Leo was right on its tail attacking. It could tell this fight would be the end of them both and so could Leo. Leo didn't care at this point because his son was safe and he was thirsty for the blood of his wife's killer. With one last devastating attack, Leo leapt from his dragon and plunged his lance into the great red dragon unleashing every ounce of the dragon's power and his own into one suicide attack that caused an explosion that could be seen from hundreds of miles away. Leo Blackwood was no more.

Matilda had seen the fight going farther into the distance. Sprays of dragon fire and raw energy set the forest ablaze as she ran with the child trying to escape the danger, for that was her master's wishes.

As she stopped to catch her breath with the child unconscious in her arms, she turned to see Lord Blackwood in his final moments. A tremendous explosion of power that toppled ancient trees, blew out across the land with massive shockwaves. The land beneath was burnt to a crisp and nothing was left alive. A single tear fell down her cheek as she looked down at the child, the future of the Blackwood lineage laid in her hands.
