Chapter 105 - Tragedy_01 - Ben

The boys' stay at the Morgan's proved to be a surreal experience, as they seamlessly became part of the family. Chris delved into learning healing arts from Helen, while Dave and Alan engaged with Jean in discussions about painting, arts, and various topics.

Ben and Bob, inspired by their initial exposure to trade and economics at Heathrow's, initiated training with Elizabeth, alongside Williams. The routine was established with the boys carrying out their early morning combat training, additional individuals training with the Morgan's and Spaaring and training again In the evenings. Alan, Jean, and now even Williams, indulged in playing music. The Morgans were ecstatic to witness Williams' impressive progress in playing instruments.

A joyous month passed swiftly, culminating in the departure of Bob and Ben to their hometowns. As promised, Alan, Williams, and Dave handed over the gold to the boys. To their surprise, James had an additional surprise waiting for them—young war horses. In fact, the thoughtful gift extended to all four boys.

The horses, vibrant and energetic, were distributed accordingly. Ben received a bay gelding, Bob got a black horse with white markings, Dave's mount was a dapple gray beauty, and Chris was bestowed with a chestnut-colored horse.

"These are gifts from the Heathrow's. They intended to give them to you before your departure, but acquiring suitable horses took some time. You'll be allowed to have your own horses in your second year at academy, so take good care of these from now on," James informed them.

Touched by the generous gesture, everyone happily accepted the gift. After a few days, both boys set out to their hometowns alongside the merchant's caravan, heading towards their destination. Recommended by Alan and Williams, they were even paid to accompany the caravan as adventurers.

Excitement filled the two boys as they anticipated reaching home and surprising their parents with the gold and help their family to come out of the tight spot. They hadn't yet revealed the news of the support their friends had extended to them.

However, what awaited them upon arrival was beyond their wildest dreams—a tragedy mirrored in both of the boys' hometowns.

When Ben reached his father's inn, on the fifth day, he was shocked to find a different Inn name and decorations. Upon entering, he encountered a different man behind the desk.

"Sorry for the interruption, but may I know where the owner, Mr. Clinton, is?" Ben asked the man.

"Sorry, lad. Clinton sold this property to me more than six months ago. May I know who you would be?" The new innkeeper inquired, leaving Ben stunned. "I am his son, Benjamin." The innkeeper asked a few more questions to confirm the boy's identity.

"Lad, I am so sorry. Your father passed away six months ago. His old injuries started festering from inside, and he didn't want you to see the gruesome condition he was in. He feared it would affect your mind and your academic studies. We were like brothers in arms during our adventures days. I had to move to a different place a decad ago. When I came back less than a year ago. I came to know the severity your father was in. I tried my best lad. I took him to the magic healer also. Alsa it was too late by that time."

" I helped him clear his debts, purchased his Inn as per his request. Here, this is the letter and some gold he left in my care before he passed away. That's why I had to verify if it's really you," he handed over a hefty pouch and an envelope to Ben patting his shoulder. You can always come to me if you need anything Benjamin." The innkeeper said consoling Ben.

Ben stood there, completely blank, unable to digest the shocking news. He thanked the innkeeper and started walking numbly towards his house.

Upon reaching his house, he found it deserted, with the door and gate both locked. He stood there for a long time until he heard his name. "Ben, lad, when did you come back? Come in, come in," his neighbor, Mr. Duncan, came to him and took him to his place.

"What happened, Mr. Duncan? Why didn't you or anyone inform me?" Ben asked, still looking blank.

Duncan's wife Cathy brought a glass of water and handed it to Ben. Once he drank it, she started, " We are sorry Ben. Your father didn't want you to see the condition he was in. He was, he was.... she started crying hugging Ben."
