Chapter 2 - A chance encounter in the woods

And this is where his story picks up. A few months after he learned how to trap and hunt properly he encountered something unexpected.

After waking up the first thing he always does is check his traps. He doesn't like to keep the animals alive longer then necessary, it just seemed unnecessary in his eyes to inflict more pain on them for no reason.

On this particular morning he found something unexpected on his route, a patch of cleanly cut trees.

'Not unusual with all the wood we need to rebuild' Odd thought to himself 'A bit far away from the village perhaps? Maybe I should check this out just to be sure?'

His curiosity, boosted by his confidence in being able to hide in the woods, compelled him to investigate this rather weird occourance. So he trudged on, keeping to the outside of the clearing, always a tree or two away from the edge to have some cover.

Then he spotted it, it was gigantic, at least a 80 meter wingspan, maybe around 3 meters long plus/minus a few centimeters. An adult Timberjack, just laying there at the end of the clearing.

'Almost as if it crashed through the trees?' continuing his approach Oddlog tried to stay low and quiet 'It does seem to be quite wounded, but why does it have it wings curled like that? Almost as if its protecting something with them'

As he got closer he realized, it was still alive even though it doesn't look particularly strong anymore.

'Weak and shallow breaths, half opened eyes and barely moving. Should be safe to approach even if just to put it out of its misery'

As Odd steppes out of the treeline the timberjack doesn't react much. Only following him with its eyes and quitly growling as if a warning not to approach.

"I don't know if you can even understand me, but you are already dead. If not through the injuries then through the vikings that live here" At that the Timberjack lets out a low roar of acceptance but also defiance "At least let me make it quick you've suffered more than necessary already"

The Timberjack looks into its folded wings and then back at Oddlog as if deciding something and then slowly unfolds its wings revealing a much smaller Timberjack curled up and very defensive. At that the Timberjack lets out a quiet, pleading whimper.

Unclear why to him at that moment, he decided he would care for that young Timberjack. Maybe it was those giant eyes that stared at him with so much fear? Maybe he was touched by the adult dragons will to protect it even while dying? Maybe it was because he knew how hard it was growing up without your parents?

"How a bout a snack little one?" As he says that he cuts off the leg of the rabbit he got from one of his traps and hold it out to the small dragon "Come on you've got to be quite hungry"

A few seconds after he held out the leg the small dragon cautiously approached him, only to snatch the entire rabbit out of his other hand and run back to the adult Timberjack.

"Come on! That was supposed to be my dinner today!" A bit suprised by the dragons hunger at first he throws it the leg he still has, wich the small dragon catches in its mouth an swallows whole "Guess I'll eat fish today then, luckly rabbit pelts can be sold easly enought so I have a bit of money saved up"

At that the adult Timberjack jack emits what sounds like chuckles, before nudging the smaller one, who had already eaten the entire rabbit, gently into Odds direction. First it looks back questioningly but after a few low growls and small roars from the adult it reluctantly turns around and tries to climb up Odds leg.

Taking a few steps back, startled at first he out of reaction asks "What are you doing?" The small dragon hot on his tail manages to climb up his front, with its small but surprisingly handy claws, and just hangs on his chest from his shoulders. "Ow. Be careful please your claws are pointy."

Turning to look at the presumed mother, he sees that she was just lying there watching them. Walking next to her head he kneels down next to it and places a hand on her snout as a silent promise to care for her child, and moments later she closed her eyes to never open them again.

Standing back up a few minutes later he looks down on his chest "No what to do with you? I can't take you home with me, some of the others might find you there. I'd take you to the cove close to raven's point but anybody could stumble on you there. I know of a rather secluded spot deeper in the forest, it's a bit of a walk but better than being discovered I suppose"

With that said he starts making his way to a unassuming cave a bit into the woods.

"And here we are your new home till I figure something out. Its got a small creek flowing next to it so you can drink and till you're big enought to hunt yourself I'll bring you food everyday, you just gotta stay here for a while and I promise to spend as much time with you as I can"

The baby dragon letting out more of a yelp than a roar climbs off of its mount and settles down on a flat rock in the cave, falling asleep fast, alot having happened today.

Already mentally exhausted despite being awake for only a few hours Odd starts his trek back through the forest to the village of berk to get some fish for dinner and maybe meet with Hiccup, the only person he would consider his friend and not just an acquaintance.
