Chapter 35 - WHEN THE GRASSHOPPERS ARRIVE

Rory and Ari circled each other in the center of the training ground, the early morning light casting long shadows on the sand. The air was tense with anticipation and the sound of rapid movements as the two ants practiced their sparring techniques. Rory's technique was more controlled as he repeatedly slashed his mandibles at Ari with precise, practiced motions. Each strike was executed with a controlled ferocity that nearly connected on several occasions, causing isla to gasp and close her eyes.

Ari, with his eyes narrowed in focused determination, dodged every attack. Yet even as he evaded Rory's swipes, he couldn't ignore the growing realization that each successive blow was coming perilously closer to landing. The fluidity of his evasions was matched only by his growing concern as the distance between threat and safety diminished with every calculated move.

Their sparring had been more than just practice; it was an unspoken dialogue of respect and rivalry that had built over days of rigorous training. Rory made several consecutive attempts, his mandibles whistling through the air as he launched one attack after another. Ari moved with a combination of instinct, footwork and honed reflexes, managing to dodge every strike quickly. The pace was relentless until Rory executed a decisive downward slash, forcing Ari to instinctively draw his own mandibles in order to block.

"Clang! Whoa, Ari drew his mandibles again Rory!!" said Isla shocked. Her exclamation echoed around the training area. Rory's eyes glinted with a mix of pride and mischief. "I finally got you to draw your mandibles, now it will no longer seem like you're making a mockery of me," he said with a smirk.

"You gotten slightly stronger over the past few days we sparred, are you adapting to me already?" asked Ari. His tone held a mixture of challenge and genuine curiosity about his own progress. Rory's confidence soared at the acknowledgment of his efforts. "Well, an experienced ant taught me some techniques in order to keep up with you."

Ari's eyes narrowed for a moment as he muttered under his breath, "Oh I see I should have known that this is lieutenant Brooks's doing," the thought resonating with him as he considered the influences behind his friend's sudden improvement. Still, the tension between them was electrifying, and it was clear that every move on the training field carried a meaning beyond mere practice.

"Well then, since you got me to draw my mandibles how about I show you how I fight as a reward," said Ari. "You're welcome to try." With those words, Ari lunged forward with renewed energy, his mandibles slicing through the air. Rory, ever alert, blocked the incoming strike, their limbs colliding in a shower of sparks. But just as quickly as the encounter began, Ari vanished from Rory's field of vision.

"Where did he go?" Rory said to himself, shocked by the sudden disappearance. In the blink of an eye, a cold sensation grazed the back of his neck. Spinning around, he found, to his amazement, that Ari's mandibles were now resting gently upon his skin—a silent yet undeniable reminder of his friend's skill and subtlety. "You got me..." he admitted, a mix of awe and respect coloring his voice.

The demonstration had not gone unnoticed. As Rory absorbed the shock and thrill of the unexpected encounter, Corporal Beatrice, accompanied by Corporal Lily, strode over with measured steps. "That was amazing. The both of you did well," she said warmly, her praise mingling with a firm tone of command as she surveyed the scene. "For the past few days we have been watching the two of you practicing, and we are really impressed. Usually after the ant recruits undergo training and become privates, they never try to enhance their strength and fighting techniques in order to get stronger and climb the ranks," Beatrice continued, her voice carrying both admiration and authority.

"But the two of you are different. You keep on training on your own free will, Anastasia was right about all of you, especially Ari," Corporal Lily added, pushing her arm gently between Ari's own as she spoke. The physical contact, though intended as a gesture of camaraderie, stirred a flurry of unexpected emotions in Ari.

"Hey, what are you doing!!" said Ari as he blushed. "Her breasts they are pressing against my hand, no I can't get flustered she's just an ant," he mumbled to himself, his cheeks burning bright red even as he tried to convince himself otherwise. Lily, noticing his awkward reaction, offered him a teasing smile that further lightened the charged atmosphere.

"Yes, Anastasia was definitely right, we always train to improve ourselves," said Isla with a confident nod, her eyes reflecting the same fire that burned in the hearts of all who trained hard. Rory, however, was not one to let the moment pass without a bit of provocation. "As if, all you do is just sit back and watch me and Ari spar," he remarked, his tone laced with playful arrogance.

"That was hardly sparring. All you did was get your butt kicked by Ari over and over again," countered Isla, her words carrying a mix of humor and truth. Rory's face flushed with embarrassment as he retorted, "That's not what happened and you couldn't have done any better since you're a coward." His voice wavered between anger and self-deprecation, leaving a palpable tension hanging in the air.

Before the bickering could escalate any further, a sudden, urgent commotion erupted at the edge of the training field. Military ants, their presence previously a quiet reassurance in the background, now emerged into visible view. Their shouts grew louder and more frantic as they hurried toward the colony. "Why are they in such a hurry?" asked Isla, confusion tinting her voice as she tried to understand the sudden disruption.

"The grasshoppers, the grasshoppers are coming!" they shouted in unison, their voices echoing with alarm across the expanse of the training area. The news hit the group like a physical blow. "Oh no, they are already here," said Beatrice, her voice quivering with shock as the severity of the situation sank in.

"But why are they here so early? They shouldn't be here until five days from now," added Lily, shaking with fear as she tried to process the unexpected arrival of these formidable foes.

"What do you mean by grasshoppers?" asked Ari, his tone a mix of confusion and disbelief as he struggled to understand the implications of this sudden development. The answer came in the form of urgent, authoritative commands. "Listen, there is no time to explain right now. Ari, we need to act fast. Lily, get all the recruits and every military ant under the corporal rank back into the Colony," said Beatrice, her words brisk and decisive.

"Right away!" said Lily as she sprinted off, her pace matching the urgency of the situation. "Ari, Lily, Rory, alert the worker ants and tell all of them to stop all activities and return to the colony at once," instructed Beatrice, her tone brooking no argument as she orchestrated the immediate defensive measures.

"Right away," said Rory, his voice firm as he broke into a run, disappearing into the distance before the others could catch up with him. The gravity of the moment pressed upon them all. "Let's go, Isla," said Ari, taking Isla's hand and pulling her along as he too dashed toward the colony's heart. "Wait, wait, Ari!" Isla screamed in fright, her voice carrying fear.

In the midst of chaos, as the worker ants and recruits and lower rank soldiers began to scramble towards the colony. Beatrice's voice rang out with resolute authority. "I'll have to alert Commander Anastasia, Lieutenant Brooks, Commander Seth and Queen Celeste. We have everything prepared and the harvest is ready but they need to know," she declared as she hurried inside the colony, her mind already racing through contingency plans they had for years.
