Ruby and Karl froze.
That cough wasn't theirs.
Slowly, they both turned their heads toward the sound.
Angeline.
She stood a few feet away, arms crossed, her expression unreadable, but her eyes gleaming with amusement.
Ruby felt her soul leave her body.
Karl stiffened beside her, his earlier smugness evaporating into thin air.
Angeline raised a brow. "So…" she drawled, tapping her fingers against her arm. "What was that about?"
Ruby opened her mouth. No words came out.
Karl looked at Ruby. Ruby looked at Karl.
Silence.
Then Karl, ever the dramatic one, suddenly turned on Ruby, pointing a finger at her.
"She attacked me!" he blurted.
Ruby's jaw dropped.
Angeline snorted.
"You little—!" Ruby swung at Karl, but he dodged, running behind Angeline for cover.
"Wife, violence isn't the answer!" Karl cried out.
"Come here and say that again!"
Angeline chuckled, shaking her head. "You two are exhausting."
Then, grinning slightly, she added, "But… it's cute."
