Chapter 269 - Questions

Jessica sat in the backseat of the cab, her fingers intertwined in her lap as she stared blankly out the window. The morning sun was bright and the city was abuzz with activity, but she barely noticed.

Her heart pounded a steady rhythm of fear and uncertainty against her ribs.

Please let Damon be wrong.

The silent prayer repeated in her mind over and over as the cab moved steadily toward the hospital.

She knew it didn't make sense to make such a prayer but she didn't want to believe that all these years she had believed a lie.

Maybe Pete hadn't lied to her. Maybe the doctor had been right all along. Maybe all of this doubt was for nothing.

But as much as she wanted to hold onto that hope, like a shadow creeping in through a cracked door, the doubts had already begun slipping in, wrapping around her like an invisible chain.

Pete had always been so certain. Too certain.
