Her fingers were pressed against her forehead as she leaned on the kitchen counter, waiting for the bread to toast. "What did I just see? Agh!" Leo groaned, feeling genuinely pained, a clot forming in her throat. "I think dying would have been much easier than coping with this man. How am I going to get anything out of him when it's such a pain in the *ss just being around him?" She whined to herself, "I am losing the patience I never knew I had." Tears lined her eyes.
It took Argon a good half-hour to get into his suit due to his hand condition, and when he finally emerged from his room, the buttons on his shirt were fastened randomly, making his whole appearance messy. Even the tie was improperly done. It wasn't that Leo knew how to tie one, but at least hers still hung down her neck, even when Kiera had tied it for her ages ago. Argon rolled his eyes at her from the doorway of his room and then walked directly towards the door.
"What is the meaning of this? Is he not going to have the breakfast he ordered?" Leo turned to look at the toaster, which had started to smoke. She instantly pulled the plug out of the socket, knowing the smoke was not a good sign. Peeking into the bread holders, she saw a dark mass sitting casually. "Tsk! It's burned," she muttered, feeling disappointed. She hurriedly raced out of the apartment behind Argon, who was heading directly towards the stairwell.
"Is he going to take the stairs again? Can't we just use the elevator? I mean, it's irritating when I'm alone, but I don't want to take the stairs all the time," she sighed heavily, following Argon closely. She followed him all the way to the office, giving him nasty looks through the rearview mirror, which didn't go unnoticed by Argon.
"Hello! Kant," Argon said the second they reached the office building, grabbing his secretary's phone. "Did you find me your replacement yet?" He sounded like it was a real emergency.
"No, but is everything okay?"
"What do you mean no? And no, everything is not okay! I have suffered greatly because of your absence, and I am furious!" he exclaimed, hinting towards Leo. She saw him glaring at her in the rearview mirror, urging her to open the car door for him. She gritted her teeth and gave out a heavy groan before getting out of the car and opening his door.
"I need you to get here ASAP! Or you are fired!" he threatened and ended the call instantly.
'This man is firing everyone he lays eyes on. How is he running this place?' She shook her head sideways. Leo followed Argon because she had no idea where she was stationed in the office, as he had just agreed to give her the job without specifying where. Also, it didn't seem like he was going to station her at the position she had applied for, so she was waiting for the next orders.
When they finally reached the elevator, Argon paused and looked at the stairwell, his gaze narrowing as if trying to make a decision. But before he could, Leo pressed the button and, luckily, the elevator doors opened quickly. She got on, and it didn't take long before Argon also abandoned the idea of using the stairwell, as neither of them had the energy to walk all the way up, especially because both of them were starving without realizing it yet.
Inside the elevator, Leo kept her gaze forward, trying to ignore the awkward silence between them. Argon cleared his throat and finally spoke, "You know, if you weren't so incompetent, I wouldn't have to make these calls."
Leo rolled her eyes internally, 'And if you weren't so insufferable, I wouldn't be having such a hard time,' she thought, but decided against voicing it. Instead, she said, "Of course, you're right. That's exactly why I applied for a position as an intern and not your personal nanny." She pulled her lips into a tight line and leaned in slightly.
"Hmm—" he nodded as if suddenly reminded of the matter. "You are right! I should not keep you at such a high position. I need to create an insignificant role in the company just so I can adjust you into it because of how incompetent you are and how negligible your skills are," he replied with a smug tone.
'Hah! I would love to scratch that pretty face of yours,' she thought inwardly, but remained silent, not giving him the satisfaction of a retort.
"Ding." The elevator doors opened to reveal the woman from yesterday, her face set in a deep frown, likely due to some urgency.
"Everything okay?" Argon asked as he stepped out of the elevator.
"Boss, the investors are here. They have been waiting for a while now," she replied.
"But weren't they supposed to be here at 11?" Argon was confused, a frown now forming on his face.
"Yes, but they arrived earlier and have been showing some serious irritated behavior. What should we do, boss?" she asked, puzzled.
"Well, let's meet them then," he said, turning around. He finally noticed the state Leo was in. "What the? Who comes to the office like that?" He was even more irritated at her twisted collars and the tie pulled down.
'Is he for real?' she thought, baffled.
"Go and get dressed so you are a little presentable. You'll ruin the company's image with that face of yours." He shook his head in irritation and turned to the woman. "Get me the necessary files."
"Yes, boss," she nodded and entered the elevator along with Leo, who was still inside. The last thing Leo saw was Argon's crumpled expression, and she didn't want to respond to him at all, as it seemed pretty useless.
"Tough day?" the woman asked sympathetically.
Leo wasn't expecting the woman to talk to her again. "Yeah," she nodded.
"You must be new here? I haven't seen you around before. Are you a replacement for Kant?" the woman asked.
"Kind of."
"Boss is very difficult to work with. I hope you can stick around for long." She gave Leo a soft smile and patted her gently on the back before the elevator opened and she left, and other people entered the elevator.
"What was that? She was so nice to me." She pouted in confusion.
Leo leaned against the wall of the elevator, feeling the weight of the morning. 'Maybe not everyone here is as terrible as Argon,' she mused, a small glimmer of hope flickering in her chest. As the elevator continued its descent, she couldn't help but replay the brief interaction in her mind, feeling slightly more at ease.
