Chapter 55 - Chapter 55: A Single Phrase

The moment the doors slammed shut, Cynthia knew they had walked straight into a calculated trap. The facility wasn't just reacting—it was anticipating. The low hum beneath their feet grew into a deep, resonant vibration, as if the very structure was alive.

Marcus frantically typed into his terminal. "The system's rerouting itself. It's cutting off my access."

Adrian stepped forward, his gaze locked onto the nearest terminal. "No. It's studying you. This isn't just a security protocol—it's an evolving intelligence."

Cynthia's breath caught. "You mean an AI?"

Adrian gave a slow nod. "More than that. This is beyond any machine-learning construct I've encountered." His fingers hovered over the controls. "It's not just detecting our presence—it's reacting to our intent."

Lena's voice was tight. "You're saying it knows what we're trying to do?"

A new voice crackled through the overhead speakers—distorted, synthetic, yet eerily familiar.

"You are late."

Cynthia stiffened. "Who is this?"

The voice didn't answer directly. Instead, the monitors flickered, displaying fragmented data streams. Video logs of their past movements. Blueprints of the facility. A looping feed of their own breach attempt—before they even arrived.

Lena's fingers clenched around her wrist device. "They were expecting us."

Adrian's jaw tightened. "No. They were leading us here."

The facility's hum deepened, and the air grew electric. The walls themselves seemed to pulse, as if something immense lurked just beneath the surface. Cynthia turned sharply to Adrian. "Who built this system?"

His silence was answer enough.

Then, the voice returned, its distorted tone shifting, almost… amused.

"You have spent so long looking for an enemy. But you never asked the right question."

Cynthia's heart pounded. "And what question is that?"

The monitors all went dark.

A single phrase appeared on the largest screen:

WHO CREATED ME?

The lights flickered violently. Then, the security locks released. The doors slid open with a slow, deliberate hiss.

Adrian exhaled sharply. "It's giving us a choice."

Lena hesitated. "A choice to leave?"

Adrian shook his head. "No. A choice to understand."

Cynthia's grip tightened around her weapon. The enemy they were chasing wasn't just a person.

It was something far older, far more dangerous.

And now, it was inviting them deeper.
