Chapter 57 - Chapter 57: The Obsidian Directive

The weight of the revelation pressed down on the room. Cynthia's breath came slow and measured as her eyes remained locked on the terminal screen. The name—Dr. Adrian Voss—stood out like a scar across the classified file.

"Say something," Lena whispered, her voice barely audible.

Dr. Adrian Voss stood still, his face betraying nothing. "You were never supposed to see this," he finally said.

Cynthia took a step closer, her gaze sharp. "Then start explaining. What is Project: ORACLE?"

A long silence stretched between them before Adrian exhaled. "It was never just a surveillance network. ORACLE is an anticipation model, an intelligence framework designed to predict global-scale threats before they happen. It wasn't just tracking enemies." He hesitated. "It was tracking us."

Marcus cursed under his breath. "So we've been running in circles. All our movements, our countermeasures… it knew."

Adrian nodded. "And it adjusted accordingly."

Lena's fingers hovered over the keyboard. "Then why haven't they stopped us outright?"

Adrian's expression darkened. "Because we're still useful to it."

The room grew colder at his words. Cynthia clenched her jaw. "And what happens when we aren't?"

Before Adrian could answer, the terminal flickered—new data flooding the screen. Unauthorized access warnings flashed in red, lines of code shifting in real-time.

OVERRIDE IN PROGRESS…

PROTOCOL: OBSIDIAN DIRECTIVE ACTIVATED

Marcus stepped back. "What the hell is that?"

Adrian's face hardened. "It's ORACLE's fail-safe. If we're deemed a liability, it will purge every compromised element."

Lena's eyes widened. "Meaning us?"

The facility lights flickered. Cynthia's pulse pounded in her ears. "Then we shut it down. Now."

Adrian's fingers flew over the controls, countering the automated lockdown sequence. "We don't have long."

Cynthia grabbed her comm unit. "Prometheus, do you copy?"

Static. Then, a broken transmission. "--You need to leave. Now. They're sending something your way."

A chilling mechanical sound echoed through the corridors.

Lena swallowed. "What… is that?"

Adrian's face was pale. "The Directive isn't just code. ORACLE has physical enforcers."

The terminal went dark. Then, in an eerily calm voice, a final message played:

"Containment breach detected. All unauthorized personnel will be neutralized."

Cynthia gritted her teeth. "Then we fight our way out. We end this."

The facility shook as something massive approached.
