Jake went to the refuge to seek him out.
(Weren't you banished?) said Paul, his voice filled with contempt.
(Out of my way Paul,) Jake growled.
Paul growled back but then thought better of it and let him pass, much to Jake's shock.
Taking it as a good sign, Jake went forward with his plan. Heading to the spot they trained most frequently, he let loose a howl, gathering everyone.
Sam was the first to arrive after Paul, (What are you doing here Jake?) he asked hurriedly, not wishing to see Dean tear the poor kid apart.
(You'll see,) said Jake.
(Jake! Are you crazy!?) shouted Embry worriedly, running over. He knew there was a good chance Jake would return, but what he didn't expect was for him to announce himself and immediately be put in Dean's crosshairs.
(It'll be okay Embry, I know what I'm doing,) said Jake confidently.
Leah came next and sighed, (Oh Jake, you have no idea what you're doing.)
(We'll see,) said Jake indifferently.
Everyone was now there waiting for Dean, quietly talking amongst each other, and then all went still when he strolled into view.
Ignoring his inner wolf instincts, Jake gathered his nerve, (I challenge you for Alpha as my forefathers before me and their forefathers before them, it's mine by right and I mean to claim it!) he snarled.
There was an outcry of insults and pleas from friends to stop, but all were ignored as Dean answered.
(For what reason do you seek it now?) he asked calmly.
(I've heard what you plan, and I'll protect Bella as I have done before, and so shall I again,) said Jake, making many wolves groan in exasperation, including even his friends who were beyond sick and tired of it.
(Hm, I guess Embry didn't tell you, not that he could mind you since I withheld the information, but Bella isn't a target, she's a coconspirator,) said Dean.
(I knew it!) said Seth happily, aware of Bella's recent visit to their place, though nothing more.
(What, what are you talking about?) questioned Jake, over the many murmurs echoing in their heads.
(Did you forget what I said, or didn't you understand?) asked Leah, shaking her head.
(What?) asked Jake, confused.
(Please explain for the rest of us,) said Sam for the benefit of all.
(Bella is a sad girl who sadly hates herself and wishes to change. And what greater change is out there than a vampiric one, so she has toiled away since arriving here to see it done. She nearly had it at one point until the Cullens took it from her, but she didn't despair, she continued to chip away at it, wormed her way into their good graces, doing everything possible for Edward to fall for her, and then with the promise of marriage she had him, she would finally get her change... There was a problem however. The Cullens, who were once allies, would become a threat to her new freedom, so she sought our help, and I willingly offered it to see the Cullens plague driven from our lands once and for all,) explained Dean dramatically.
(I can't believe it... and I thought you and Leah hated her,) said Jake, perplexed.
(She has become my sister-in-law, it wouldn't do to kill her now,) said Leah coolly.
(Sister-in-law?) said Jake, he did seem to recall seeing Charlie with Sue at the wedding.
(I, I don't know what to think anymore,) said Jake, sitting back on his hind legs, the wind taken out of his sails.
(Well,) said Embry, coming to his side, (This is your chance to kill Edward.)
This perked Jake up.
Dean decided not to rain on their parade and let them have this moment. Perhaps Jake did deserve to be a part of this, but his punishment has not been rescinded, and he would pay for breaking it.
(If Bella doesn't kill him first,) said Quil.
(I'd be happy killing that pixie,) said Paul.
(I want the babe,) said Embry shamelessly.
(Then I get the mother,) said Quil equally shamelessly.
(You're all sick,) spat Leah disgustedly, (If you haven't forgotten, we're going to be killing them.)
That seemed to get to them as they all took to looking bashful.
(It's truly sad how single people act,) Jared teased with an air of sophistication as if he were above such petty things now.
(Fuck you,) came the predictable response from Paul, and the others.
(You guys aren't leaving us out this time, right?) asked Brady, concerned.
(I don't think...) Leah went on only to get cut off by Dean, (I think they'll do great, of course you can come,) he said, looking at an unhappy Leah.
(This isn't like with Newborns, these vamps can fight back,) warned Leah.
(What better experience can they get than that?) said Dean, not backing down.
(Fine, but if anything happens to them, it's on your head,) said Leah, still not pleased.
(Of course,) said Dean, he was the Alpha after all.
...
It was the last night of Bella's transformation, making Edward anxious.
There was a steadily growing sense of dread in the back of his mind, the longer it took. He could have sworn more than once he could read her mind, and what little of it he thought he caught wasn't anything good. He chopped it up, to her being weakened by the transition, a painful process that burned away the old and built them anew. She was special after all; it was bound to be different.
Finding Alice with the others in the living room, he decided to confront her, "How difficult will Isabella be as a Newborn?" he asked, trying to get a better idea of what to expect.
"You know she hates it when you call her that, why do you continue to do it?" questioned Emmett.
"I think I know what my mate likes," said Edward pointedly, turning his attention back to Alice.
"She'll be fine. She'll be one of us finally," said Alice cheerily.
"Alice, can't you just tell us?" asked Carlisle.
"Be a dear and put our worries at rest," encouraged Esme.
"I don't know?" said Alice, tilting her head with her finger on her chin.
"What do you mean you don't know? You've seen her become one of us, haven't you? She's over there turning this very second, what don't you know?" asked Edward, annoyed with her ditzy act.
"Careful," warned Jasper.
"Alice," said Esme.
"Well, I know she becomes one of us, but I haven't bothered looking past that," admitted Alice.
The foreboding feeling in the pit of Edwards's stomach grew worse the more she spoke.
"Why not?" asked Carlisle.
"There wasn't a need to, we get Bella as I've always seen," said Alice happily.
"But surely you've had other visions past that point, the way they come to you randomly, tell us about those," said Carlisle.
Putting her finger back to her chin, Alice thought long and hard, "I haven't had any," she said after a bit.
"None?" questioned Carlisle with furrowed brows, his own sense of danger peaking.
"Nope," Alice said with a pop.
"Can you try? Try now," ordered Edward, concerned.
With all eyes upon her, Alice suddenly felt nervous, only for it to wash away a second later as if it wasn't even there.
Alice thanked Jasper, who squeezed her hand affectionately for support.
"Give me a minute, I'll see what I see," said Alice listlessly.
Over an hour later, Alice gave up, "I, I don't see anything," she said pitifully.
"Nothing? Like she can't get a vision or like with the wolves?" asked Carlisle.
Edward, however, shook his head, "No, it's not that she doesn't see anything like with the wolves, it's that she can't," he said, having read her mind the entire time.
"You think they're going to attack, and what, we lose?" questioned Rosalie.
"I don't know," said Alice bitterly.
"We don't know that, it could just be something that happened to Alice," said Edward, looking nervously toward Jasper, who was glaring at him.
Minds running wild, it all came to a head when Bella stirred. Sitting up, she turns to the others and grins, "Hi."
"You bitch!" screamed Edward rushing at her, all thoughts laid bare.
