"Has Commander Burther arrived?" Clare asked impatiently, walking briskly towards a building in the South Fortress.
Another man walked beside Clare. The man's legs were slightly shorter than Clare's, so he had to take three steps for every two the young sergeant took.
"He's here, Sergeant," the shorter man reported. "He's waiting for you in his office."
The man was new to the fortress. He had gone to pick Clare up when the sergeant was patrolling the western border, but the sergeant seemed to be in such a hurry that he had walked ahead before the younger man had even stated his destination.
It seemed like Clare had predicted that his father had arrived, and that was why he had immediately directed his feet toward his father's office.
