Chapter 38 - Chapter 41: The First Artifact

The journey back down the mountain was swift, the sense of urgency driving Rick and Selene forward. The sage had given them a map, a cryptic piece of parchment that showed the locations of the ancient artifacts they needed to find. According to the sage, the first artifact was hidden in the ruins of an old fortress, deep within the heart of the kingdom.

As they traveled, Rick couldn't help but feel the weight of the task ahead. The artifacts were scattered across the land, each one guarded by forces that had lain dormant for centuries. The ???System pulsed within him, a constant reminder of the power he held—and the danger it posed.

They reached the outskirts of the fortress just as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the crumbling walls. The fortress, once a proud stronghold, was now little more than a ruin, its stones weathered and overgrown with vines. But Rick could sense the power that still lingered here, a faint echo of the ancient magic that had once protected the land.

"This is the place," Selene said, her voice hushed. "The artifact is hidden somewhere within these walls."

Rick nodded, his eyes scanning the ruins for any sign of danger. The air was thick with tension, and he could feel the ???System reacting to the presence of the artifact, its energy pulling him forward.

They moved cautiously through the ruins, their footsteps echoing in the silence. The fortress was a maze of collapsed corridors and forgotten chambers, each one filled with the remnants of a bygone era. As they ventured deeper, the sense of unease grew stronger, the shadows around them seeming to move of their own accord.

Finally, they reached a large chamber at the heart of the fortress. In the center of the room stood a pedestal, its surface covered in ancient runes that glowed faintly in the darkness. Atop the pedestal rested a small, ornate box, similar in design to the one that had held Selene's soul fragment.

"This must be it," Rick whispered, stepping closer to the pedestal.

But as he reached out to take the box, a low growl echoed through the chamber, followed by the sound of heavy footsteps. Rick froze, his hand hovering over the box as a figure emerged from the shadows.

It was a creature of darkness, its form twisted and monstrous, with glowing red eyes that burned with malice. The creature snarled, its sharp teeth glinting in the faint light as it advanced toward them.

Rick drew his sword, his heart pounding in his chest. The ???System surged within him, its energy ready to be unleashed, but he hesitated. The sage's warning echoed in his mind: The more you use this power, the more it will seek to corrupt you.

But there was no time to think. The creature lunged, its claws slashing through the air with deadly precision. Rick reacted on instinct, blocking the attack with his sword and countering with a swift strike of his own. The blade connected with the creature's flesh, but instead of blood, a dark, shadowy substance oozed from the wound.

The creature roared in pain, but it wasn't finished. It lashed out again, its movements faster and more aggressive. Rick dodged and parried, his mind racing as he tried to find an opening. But the creature was relentless, and Rick knew he couldn't keep this up forever.

"Rick, look out!" Selene's voice rang out, and Rick barely had time to react as the creature's claws came dangerously close to his face.

He needed to end this, and quickly.

With a deep breath, Rick focused on the ???System, letting its power flow through him. He felt the familiar rush of energy, the surge of strength that came with it. But he also felt the darkness, the corruption that lurked just beneath the surface, waiting for a moment of weakness.

He couldn't let it control him.

Rick unleashed a burst of energy, his sword glowing with a brilliant light as he struck the creature with all his might. The impact sent the creature crashing into the wall, where it dissolved into a pool of shadows, its form disintegrating into nothingness.

Rick stood still for a moment, his breath coming in ragged gasps as the adrenaline slowly faded. He had won, but the cost was not lost on him. The ???System's power was immense, but it was also dangerous, and every time he used it, he felt himself slipping closer to the edge.

Selene approached him, her expression a mix of relief and concern. "Are you all right?"

Rick nodded, though his mind was still reeling from the battle. "I'm fine. Let's get the artifact and get out of here."

They returned to the pedestal, where the ornate box still rested. This time, Rick reached out and took it without hesitation, feeling a wave of warmth and light as the box connected with the ???System. He knew this was just the beginning—there were more artifacts to find, more battles to fight—but for now, they had what they came for.

As they made their way out of the fortress, Rick couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. The shadows seemed to move on their own, and every now and then, he thought he heard the faintest whisper, just at the edge of his hearing.

"He knows."

The words echoed in his mind, a reminder that their enemies were closer than ever.
