Laura recognized Capone's voice, and her crying stopped. Her small, furrowed face relaxed, her red eyes fixed on him, and she sobbed harder.
"Don't be afraid, Uncle's here to take you home. Your mommy's outside too!"
"Uncle... Mommy..." As soon as Laura heard the word "mommy," she burst into tears again.
Capone's heart ached. "Baby, don't cry. We'll see your mommy very soon. Stay still, Uncle will untie the ropes for you!"
His hands reached behind her, and as he touched the ropes, he also felt something unusual on her body.
"Karl," he whispered, as if fearing even the slightest sound would disturb something.
"Boss, how is it?"
"There might be an incendiary device on the child, or it could be a full bomb. Should I untie her hands, or leave them tied?"
He didn't even know how he managed to speak those words so calmly. His mind was almost blank, and all that filled it was the belief that he would never leave Laura's side.
