Chapter 33 - RETURN TO KONOHA [ 28 ]

[ JINICHI WATARU ]

The journey back to the Hidden Leaf Village took everything we had left in our battered bodies. My legs felt like they were made of solid lead, dragging heavily with every single step I took. Beside me, Aoi and Kisuke looked just as exhausted, their faces covered in dirt and dried sweat. We had barely spoken a word since we disembarked from the ship that brought us from the Land of Tea. Survival had cost us deeply, and the adrenaline crash left nothing but a hollow ache behind.

The towering green forests of the Land of Fire finally began to thin out around us. Through the gaps in the massive tree trunks, the familiar wooden walls of Konoha came into view. I let out a breath I did not realize I had been holding for the last three days. My shoulders slumped forward, and a massive wave of relief washed over my bruised muscles. We were finally home, away from the poison, the assassins, and the suffocating political nightmares.

The grand, imposing gates of the village stood open, welcoming us back into the safety of its borders. The two eternal gate guards, Izumo and Kotetsu, were sitting at their usual station just inside the entrance. I could see the bustling civilian life beyond them, the peaceful streets utterly ignorant of our recent struggles. It was a stark contrast to the blood we had shed just a few days prior. I decided right then and there that I truly loved this mundane, boring peace.

Without a single second of hesitation, I dropped heavily onto my hands and knees right in front of the gate. The dusty dirt road had never looked so incredibly inviting in my entire life. I leaned forward and pressed my lips directly against the gritty ground in a highly exaggerated kiss.

"Oh, beautiful, solid, safe ground, I have missed you so very much," I declared loudly.

"I promise I will never, ever leave your wonderful embrace again as long as I live."

The passing villagers immediately stopped what they were doing to stare at my dramatic display. I did not care in the slightest, happily placing another loud kiss against the familiar dirt. Suddenly, a rough hand grabbed the back of my collar and yanked me forcefully into the air. I choked on a mouthful of dust as I dangled helplessly from Aoi's surprisingly strong grip. She glared fiercely at me, her cheeks burning red with intense, furious embarrassment.

"What is entirely wrong with you, you idiot?!!" she hissed through her tightly gritted teeth.

"People are staring at us like we are completely insane because of your weird behaviour."

I tried to squirm out of her tight hold, but she only pulled my collar higher.

"Let me go, I am just showing my proper appreciation for the village," I managed to choke out.

"You are embarrassing the entire team, so stand up and act like a normal person!" she fired back.

I scowled at her and batted her hands away from my neck so I could fix my jacket.

"I almost died from poison, so I think I have earned the right to kiss the ground of my home" I argued defensively. Aoi rolled her eyes so hard I thought they might actually get stuck in the back of her head.

"You are just being dramatic and making a huge scene for absolutely no reason," she retorted sharply. We glared at each other, the familiar irritation briefly masking our deep, underlying exhaustion.

Before I could formulate a witty comeback, a calm hand rested gently on my shoulder. Kisuke stepped between us, offering a tired but highly diplomatic smile to calm the rising tension.

"Let us just focus on getting inside and reporting to the Hokage," he suggested softly.

"We are all incredibly tired, and fighting right now will not get us to our beds any faster." His calm logic instantly deflated our argument, leaving both Aoi and myself grumbling quiet apologies.

While we were busy bickering, Shohei-sensei had walked over to the desk to speak with the gate guards. Izumo leaned over the wooden counter, eyeing our battered state with a clear look of professional concern.

"Rough time out there in the Land of Tea, Shohei?" the guard asked with a sympathetic wince. Our sensei let out a long, heavy sigh and aggressively rubbed the back of his neck.

"It was absolute hell, to be completely honest with you." he replied in an exhausted tone.

Kotetsu paused his paperwork and gave our team leader a very solemn, understanding nod.

"Well, welcome back to the village; try to get some rest after you file your report" he offered kindly. Shohei simply grunted in response, motioning for the three of us to follow him into the village. We fell into step behind him, ignoring the lingering stares of the civilians we passed. The walk to the center of the village felt much longer than it usually did.

We navigated through the busy marketplace, the vibrant sounds of commerce washing over us. I watched young children running past stalls, laughing wildly as they played simple ninja games. They had no idea about the true horrors that awaited them if they actually became Genin. I kept my gaze forward, trying to block out the intrusive memories of the safe house. We needed to finish this final administrative task before I could finally collapse into my bed.

The Hokage mansion loomed ahead of us, its red paint bright against the clear afternoon sky. I stared up at the mountain behind it, my eyes tracing the carved stone faces of the previous leaders. The village was exactly as we had left it, yet everything felt fundamentally different to me now. My perspective on being a shinobi had shifted drastically during those chaotic moments fighting for our lives. I forced myself to focus on the present as we climbed the stairs to the main office.

The interior of the administrative building was surprisingly quiet compared to the bustling streets outside. We walked down the polished wooden hallway, the sound of our heavy boots echoing loudly. Shohei-sensei did not speak a word, his expression locked into a hardened, professional mask. I knew he was carrying the heaviest burden from the mission, feeling responsible for all of us. I silently promised myself that I would get stronger so he wouldn't have to worry anymore.

Shohei-sensei knocked firmly on the heavy wooden door of the Hokage's office before turning the handle. We filed into the room, instantly feeling the heavy gaze of the Third Hokage settle upon us. Lord Third sat behind his massive desk, his aged face mostly hidden behind a cloud of pipe smoke. He carefully set down his brush and folded his hands on top of a large stack of paperwork.

"Welcome back, Team 13; I have been eagerly awaiting your return," he said with a gravelly voice.

Shohei stepped forward and placed a sealed scroll directly onto the center of the Hokage's desk. "Here is the full, detailed report regarding the events that unfolded in the Land of Tea," he stated formally. The Hokage picked up the scroll, breaking the seal to scan the contents with rapid, experienced eyes. The silence in the room grew thick and heavy as he absorbed the grim details of our struggle. I shifted uncomfortably on my feet, feeling a nervous sweat gather on my palms.

The smoke from his pipe drifted lazily toward the ceiling, creating strange, twisting patterns in the air. We waited anxiously for what felt like an absolute eternity while he finished reading the document. I could practically hear Aoi's heart beating rapidly next to me in the quiet office. Kisuke remained perfectly still, his eyes locked onto the floor in a show of deep respect. Finally, the old man slowly rolled the scroll back up and placed it gently aside.

The old man finally lowered his hands and let out a long, very weary sigh.

"It seems my initial assessment of this mission's difficulty was severely lacking in foresight," he admitted quietly. He looked at each of us in turn, his eyes filled with a deep, grandfatherly regret.

"You three faced enemies and situations far beyond what any newly formed Genin team should ever encounter," he stated firmly.

"I am incredibly proud of how you handled yourselves in the face of such adversity."

Aoi straightened her posture proudly, though I could still see the lingering sadness haunting her green eyes. Kisuke offered a respectful bow, keeping his expression carefully neutral despite the praise from our village leader. I just nodded slowly, still too tired to properly process the compliment from the most powerful man in Konoha. Hearing him acknowledge our intense struggle lifted a tiny bit of the heavy weight off my chest. It felt somewhat validating to know our severe trauma was not just being completely brushed under the rug.

The Hokage took a puff from his pipe, blowing a slow ring of smoke into the air.

"Given the extreme circumstances, this mission can no longer remain classified at its original level," he announced. He reached for a fresh ink brush and confidently stamped a new seal onto the mission dossier.

"I am officially upgrading your assignment from a standard C-rank to a high-level A-rank mission," he declared firmly. My jaw nearly dropped open at the revelation, completely stunned by the massive jump in official difficulty.

A-rank missions were strictly reserved for elite Jonin, not a bunch of fresh, inexperienced academy graduates. It was a terrifying validation of exactly how close we had all come to dying out there. I briefly wondered if we were the fastest newly formed team to ever complete an A-rank mission. The sheer absurdity of the situation made me want to laugh hysterically right there in the office. I forced myself to remain quiet, biting the inside of my cheek to maintain my professional composure.

"Furthermore, you will all be compensated accordingly with the standard payout for an A-rank completion," he added generously. That piece of news instantly brightened my mood, pushing some of the exhaustion away from my mind. The extra money would be incredibly useful for upgrading my gear and buying new supplies. A nice, fat pay check was exactly the kind of therapy I needed after dealing with crazy assassins.

"Thank you for your hard work and immense dedication to the Leaf Village," the Hokage concluded warmly.

He offered us one last grandfatherly smile, tapping his pipe gently against his large desk.

"You have done an excellent job, but now you need to heal your bodies and minds," he advised.

"You are officially dismissed; please go home and get some much-needed rest." We all bowed deeply in unison before silently turning to exit the smoky, oppressive office. The heavy wooden door clicked shut behind us, leaving us alone in the quiet, empty hallway.

Shohei-sensei turned to face us, crossing his arms over his flak jacket with a serious expression. "You all heard the old man, so I do not want to see you anywhere near a training ground," he ordered.

"You have the entire week off to completely recover, so please use your time wisely." I nodded enthusiastically, absolutely thrilled at the prospect of doing absolutely nothing for seven straight days. A break like this was incredibly rare for shinobi, and I fully intended to exploit it.

Aoi actually smiled, finally allowing herself a genuine expression of relief after maintaining a guarded posture.

"I plan to sleep for at least two days straight before I even think about moving," she admitted honestly. Kisuke chuckled softly, adjusting his glasses as he agreed with her ambitious resting schedule.

"I will likely spend my time organizing my medical notes and enjoying some quiet tea," he added. I just wanted to get back to my own bed and examine my system in absolute peace.

"Just stay out of trouble, Jinichi, and try not to kiss any more dirt," Shohei teased with a smirk. I rolled my eyes but offered him a lazy salute as we began walking down the corridor.

"I make absolutely no promises regarding my relationship with the beautiful ground," I fired back playfully. Our sensei just shook his head, a faint, genuine smile breaking through his previously grim demeanour. We made our way out of the mansion, stepping back into the warm afternoon sunlight.

As we approached the main street, a very loud, boisterous voice suddenly caught my immediate attention. I turned my head and spotted a highly familiar group walking away from the administrative building. Naruto Uzumaki was practically vibrating with excitement, his bright orange jumpsuit visible from a mile away. Beside him walked Sakura Haruno, who was busy scolding him for being too loud in public. Sasuke Uchiha brought up the rear, his hands stuffed in his pockets as he brooded silently.

Leading the trio was Kakashi Hatake, his face buried deep within the pages of his favourite orange book. This was Team 7, and seeing them together instantly triggered a massive wave of recognition in my brain. They looked incredibly fresh, lacking the exhausted, battered posture that currently plagued my own team. I watched them walk down the street, piecing together exactly where they had just come from. They had clearly just received a new mission assignment directly from the Third Hokage himself.

But it was the man trailing slightly behind them that truly cemented the current timeline for me. He was an older man with greying hair, wearing a simple hat and smelling faintly of cheap alcohol. He clutched a half-empty bottle in his right hand, grumbling loudly about disrespectful, loud-mouthed ninja brats. I immediately recognized him as Tazuna, the cranky bridge builder from the Land of Waves arc. The main plot of the world was finally beginning to move forward right in front of me.

I kept that vital knowledge locked firmly away in my mind as I watched them disappear down the street. If Team 7 was heading to the Land of Waves, things were about to get extremely dangerous soon. Meaning the world was rapidly scaling up in difficulty. I needed to focus entirely on my own growth if I wanted to survive the upcoming events. The Chunin Exams would be right around the corner, bringing even worse monsters right to our doorstep.

I waved goodbye to Aoi and Kisuke, eager to rush back to the safety of my own home.

"See you guys in a week, try not to miss me too much," I called out jokingly.

"I think we will manage just fine without your dramatics," Aoi shouted back with a tired wave.

I chuckled to myself, turning down the familiar side street that led directly toward my apartment. The afternoon sun was warm against my back, guiding me toward my much-needed sanctuary.

The walk to my apartment felt agonizingly slow, my heavy boots dragging against the stone pavement. I ignored the various food stalls and shops, focused solely on reaching my front door. Every muscle in my body ached, protesting the extra effort it took to climb the outdoor stairs. When I finally unlocked my apartment and stepped inside, the quiet solitude felt like a massive blessing. I dropped my gear onto the floor and immediately collapsed backward onto my soft, inviting mattress.

I stared up at the blank ceiling, waiting for my mind to finally power down for the day. The silence of the empty room was a stark contrast to the chaos we had just survived. I could finally let my guard down entirely, knowing there were no assassins hiding in the shadows. Just as my heavy eyelids began to flutter shut, a sharp chime echoed loudly in my ears.

[ *DING* ]

A bright, glowing purple screen suddenly materialized directly in the air right above my face.

I blinked rapidly, trying to clear the lingering sleep from my tired, unfocused eyes. The text on the screen flashed in bold, crisp letters that demanded my absolute attention.

[ The System shop is now Open ]

I sat up instantly.

Elsewhere, far beyond the physical boundaries of the ninja world, a vast, infinite darkness stretched endlessly. This space resembled a deep, swirling galaxy, filled with millions of glittering, colourful stars. In the very center of this cosmic void, a solitary dark figure floated in absolute, perfect silence. The being was massive, wrapped in shadows that seemed to absorb the starlight entirely. He hovered calmly, watching over countless glowing orbs that constantly shifted with everchanging, radiant colours.

Each orb pulsed with a unique, rhythmic heartbeat, representing countless interconnected lives and sprawling universes. The dark figure observed them with his eyes gently closed, sensing the ripples of fate through the void. He did not move, remaining entirely still as the cosmic energies swirled wildly around his imposing form. This celestial watcher had monitored the grand tapestry of existence for an incomprehensible amount of time. He was a silent guardian, deeply invested in the tiny, fragile threads of mortal destinies.

Suddenly, a tiny, erratic fluctuation disrupted the perfectly balanced harmony of the immediate area. A lone, glowing spirit slowly approached the massive entity, breaking the profound silence of the vast void. This new spirit resembled a small, flickering wisp, significantly smaller than the massive orbs the being watched. It darted nervously around the dark figure, its soft light casting tiny shadows across the cosmic dust. The wisp hovered just near the entity's covered face, emitting a soft, resonant humming noise.

It communicated without using actual words, projecting its clear intent directly into the silent, dark space. The spirit respectfully informed the towering, mysterious entity that their assigned job was finally done. The system had been fully integrated and successfully unlocked for the designated user in the shinobi world. A slow, enigmatic smile gradually appeared on the dark being's serene, shadowed face. He did not bother to open his eyes, entirely content to witness the universe through his other, heightened senses.

The dark figure let out a low, rumbling hum that physically shook the surrounding cluster of bright stars. He raised a massive, shadowy hand, gently gesturing toward the specific orb that represented my current world. The wisp pulsed brightly in response, eagerly awaiting its master's next cryptic, profound statement. "We have done our best to carefully support the boy from here," the being echoed into the void. His voice sounded like grinding stones and soft, whistling winds blending perfectly together in the endless dark.

"We have provided him with the necessary tools to carve out his own unique, highly unpredictable destiny," he stated. The dark figure lowered his hand, letting the shadows completely consume his massive form once again. He settled back into his silent meditation, trusting the fragile human spirit to endure the upcoming trials.

"Now, it is entirely up to the boy to ultimately find the true answer himself," he whispered softly. The void returned to perfect silence, the endless sea of stars continuing their eternal, beautiful dance.
