Chapter 3 - Into the wilds

The road ahead was long and winding, stretching beyond the horizon into untamed lands. Rheus had left the comforts of Eldergrove behind, trading the safety of the village for the wild, unpredictable terrain of the kingdom's borders. His thoughts still lingered on his friends—Jenny's shy smile, Albert's boisterous laughter—but he knew he couldn't turn back. The path to finding the Lost Kingdom and fulfilling his mission lay beyond.

The first few days of his journey were uneventful. The weather was fair, the woods provided cover, and the road was clear of bandits or wild creatures. Still, Rheus remained vigilant, knowing full well that danger lurked in the most unexpected places.

It wasn't until the third day of his trek that things took a turn.

The forest he entered was darker, its trees twisted and gnarled, their branches reaching out like claws. The air was thick with the scent of decay, and the sunlight barely penetrated the canopy above. Rheus couldn't shake the feeling that something was watching him. His hand instinctively rested on the hilt of his sword as his pace quickened.

Suddenly, the silence of the forest was broken by a low growl. Rheus froze, his eyes darting around for the source of the sound. From the shadows, a pack of feral wolves emerged, their eyes glowing with hunger. Their fur was matted, their teeth bared in vicious snarls.

Rheus drew his sword, his heart racing. He counted five wolves in total, each of them circling him, waiting for the right moment to strike.

"Great," Rheus muttered under his breath. "Could've used Albert's strength right about now."

The first wolf lunged, and Rheus barely managed to sidestep, slashing his sword across its side. The beast yelped and fell back, but the others were quick to follow, attacking in unison. Rheus swung his blade with precision, cutting through their ranks, but they were relentless. Each strike he landed only seemed to fuel their fury.

As the battle raged on, Rheus felt his strength waning. The wolves were fast and coordinated, and he was outnumbered. Just when it seemed like he might be overwhelmed, a blinding light burst through the trees, momentarily disorienting the wolves.

"Get down!" a voice shouted.

Rheus instinctively ducked as a flurry of arrows flew past him, striking the wolves with deadly accuracy. The remaining beasts howled in pain before retreating into the shadows, their glowing eyes fading into the distance.

Breathing heavily, Rheus glanced in the direction of the voice. A figure stepped out from behind the trees, bow in hand. She was a tall, slender woman with fiery red hair and sharp green eyes, her leather armor fitted perfectly to her agile frame.

"You alright?" she asked, lowering her bow.

Rheus nodded, still catching his breath. "Thanks to you. Those wolves would've torn me apart."

The woman smirked, her eyes scanning the area for any lingering threats. "You're lucky I was passing through. This forest isn't safe for travelers."

"I'm beginning to see that," Rheus replied, sheathing his sword. "I'm Rheus, by the way."

"Luisa," the woman replied with a nod. "I'm a hunter. Been tracking that pack for days."

Rheus glanced around the darkened woods. "Any idea why the wolves are acting so aggressive?"

Luisa frowned. "Something's off in these woods. The creatures have been restless, more violent than usual. It's as if something's pushing them out of their territory."

Rheus's mind raced. He had heard stories of dark magic corrupting the land, driving animals and even people mad. Could that be what was happening here?

"Do you know what's causing it?" he asked.

Luisa shrugged, her expression grim. "No idea. But if you're heading deeper into the forest, you should be careful. There's talk of a group of marauders camping somewhere in these woods, too. Not the friendliest bunch."

Rheus sighed. This was far more complicated than he had anticipated. Between the wild animals and potential bandits, his journey was becoming more dangerous by the minute.

"I don't suppose you know a safer route?" he asked, half-joking.

Luisa chuckled. "Afraid not. But if you want, I could guide you through the forest. Two pairs of eyes are better than one, and I could use the company."

Rheus considered her offer. Having an experienced hunter by his side would certainly make the trek safer, and Luisa seemed more than capable of handling herself in a fight. Besides, something about her confident demeanor reassured him.

"I'd appreciate that," he said with a smile. "It's been a while since I had company."

"Alright then, let's get moving before those wolves decide to come back with reinforcements," Luisa said, already moving ahead.

Rheus followed her lead, keeping his senses alert as they ventured deeper into the forest. The atmosphere remained tense, but with Luisa by his side, he felt a little more at ease.

As they walked, Rheus learned more about his new companion. Luisa was a wanderer, traveling from place to place, hunting dangerous beasts and selling their pelts for a living. She had no permanent home, but she didn't seem to mind the nomadic life. She was fiercely independent, preferring the solitude of the wilderness to the hustle and bustle of towns and cities.

Despite her tough exterior, Rheus found Luisa to be surprisingly easy to talk to. She had a dry sense of humor, and her sharp wit kept their conversations lively as they made their way through the dense forest.

By the time night fell, they had made significant progress, setting up camp near a small clearing. Luisa skillfully prepared a fire, and they sat around it, the flickering flames casting long shadows on the trees surrounding them.

"So, what's your story?" Luisa asked, glancing at Rheus over the fire. "You don't look like a typical traveler."

Rheus hesitated for a moment. He had been careful not to reveal too much about his true mission, but Luisa had saved his life, and he felt he could trust her.

"I'm searching for something," he finally said. "An ancient kingdom that's been lost to time. It's... important."

Luisa raised an eyebrow. "A lost kingdom, huh? Sounds like a tall tale."

Rheus chuckled. "It does, doesn't it? But it's real. Or at least, I believe it is."

"Well, good luck with that," Luisa said, leaning back and staring up at the stars. "You'll need it."

Rheus smiled. "Thanks."

The night passed quietly, with the only sound being the crackle of the fire and the distant howls of wolves in the distance. For the first time in a long while, Rheus felt a sense of peace.

The next morning, they packed up and continued their journey. The forest seemed less oppressive with Luisa by his side, and as they walked, Rheus couldn't help but feel that he had found not just a guide, but a potential ally.

Little did they know, their journey was about to take an unexpected turn—a turn that would lead them deeper into the heart of the kingdom's most dangerous mysteries.
