Chapter 142 Chameleon
Hobert got off here because he saw the carriage Ulysses sent to him not far from the Church of the Evernight Goddess.
The coachman, seeing Hobert, said, "Sir, Sheriff Jared and Mr. Dominic hope you can come over."
Jared asked the coachman about Hobert's whereabouts, who professionally claimed ignorance, or Jared would have come over himself.
"Let's go back to the mansion first," Hobert sighed. "I haven't had lunch yet!"
The coachman nodded and took Hobert back to the mansion. While the kitchen prepared lunch, Hobert returned to his room, instructing the male servant outside to guard the door and allow no one in.
After locking the door, Hobert used his own sacrificial method to send the "Golden Stag Antlers" into the Nation of Disorder.
Although he still didn't know the use of the "Golden Stag Antlers," theoretically, these two antlers should be rare Beyonder materials. He decided to leave them in the Nation of Disorder for now and figure out how to cash them out after the heat died down.
Hobert then comfortably took a bath, changed clothes, and finally went to the dining room to enjoy his belated lunch.
While eating, Hobert reflected that he seemed to enjoy these days where everything was served to him on a platter.
Perhaps when playing the "Baron of Corruption," he could indulge himself appropriately.
However, there must be a limit. Otherwise, once the evil in human nature was unleashed, even he might not be able to control himself.
After finishing lunch, Hobert asked the coachman to take him to Mr. Dominic's company again.
Naturally, Dominic was very grateful to Hobert. By then, he had been negotiating the details of a security contract with Awwa Security, and Elizabeth had already been rescued.
Dominic then said, "Sheriff Jared has been waiting for you in the living room. Although the deaths of two thugs have caused some trouble, rest assured, I will hire the best lawyer to help clear your name."
"In addition, when you explain that you are a friend of Ulysses, even if Jared wants to arrest you, he'll have to treat you with respect."
Hobert smiled, "Mr. Dominic, I have no intention of reporting to jail because I have plans tonight."
Dominic was momentarily puzzled. "Because you have plans tonight, you don't intend to cooperate with the investigation?"
"Please take me to Sheriff Jared," Hobert said as he walked out, asking, "How is Elizabeth?"
"Thank goodness, she was just a little scared."
The two of them arrived at the living room while talking. Jared had already consumed two pots of coffee. However, he had to wait here because earlier in the morning, Hobert had caused two deaths and several injuries, making this a major case.
"I'm going to arrest you immediately, Hobert!" Jared shouted loudly as soon as he saw Hobert. "At noon, you killed two citizens of Tingen City!"
"Sheriff Jared, aren't those Tingen City citizens kidnappers?" Hobert put one hand in his pocket and questioned, "Are you protecting the rights of law-abiding citizens or the interests of kidnappers?"
Jared was suddenly stunned. Faced with Hobert's questioning, he actually didn't know how to respond.
"I stopped an ongoing crime!" Hobert said, "Those two dead kidnappers were planning to murder me at the time. This also constitutes an ongoing crime. My actions were in self-defense and not excessive."
"But lives were lost," Jared's momentum immediately weakened.
"Sheriff, I understand criminal law better than you. Cooperating with your investigation is my duty, but you currently have no right to arrest or interrogate me." This was actually another loophole in the law.
Hobert remembered that in similar cases in the era of AD, he would have been locked up awaiting investigation results. However, the Criminal Law of Loen Kingdom did not clearly stipulate whether persons involved in legitimate self-defense should be temporarily detained.
Dominic intervened to smooth things over and revealed Hobert's background as Ulysses' friend. Jared could only take Hobert's statement here.
After recording the statement, Jared wanted an address where he could find Hobert at any time, and the atmosphere gradually became more cordial. When Jared left, he bid farewell to Hobert and Dominic like old friends.
This reminded Hobert of a "Chameleon."
After seeing off Jared, Dominic sneered, "When my daughter was kidnapped, you didn't take it seriously, but now you're coming to question us for a few dead kidnappers."
Meanwhile, Hobert lamented that in this kingdom of unequal personalities, such dramas might unfold every day.
If he were an ordinary person without legal knowledge, he would have been taken away by Jared. Who knew what would happen during the interrogation? Perhaps he would be heavily extorted for bail money if he said the wrong thing.
Dominic invited Hobert to dinner at his home to express their family's gratitude, but Hobert had plans both tonight and tomorrow night, so he postponed the invitation.
Around half past five in the evening, Hobert arrived at the dining room for the gathering. In addition to those who participated in today's operation, three other team members also attended, but none of the administrative staff were present.
Leonard smiled, "Old Neil probably didn't expect his leave today would make him miss such a feast?"
"Leave?" Hobert instinctively felt something was wrong. He didn't know if Klein had reminded Dunn that Neil was conducting a ritual involving an evil god. If they didn't completely disrupt Neil's ritual, he could still potentially lose control.
Klein seemed to want to remind the captain of something crucial but couldn't remember exactly what it was.
Just as he was about to use the spiritual insights of a "Seer" to help him remember, Captain Dunn suddenly brought up the topic of the mental hospital. Because this action was scheduled for tonight, he listened particularly carefully, setting aside his previous thoughts.
Meanwhile, Leonard explained to Hobert, "Old Neil is also a member of our small team, but he's been feeling a bit unwell these days."
Hobert nodded and began to discuss other topics.
When everyone learned that Daly, who had once been a Nighthawk team member in Tingen City, was Hobert's superior, they became closer to Hobert again.
Halfway through dinner, Hobert noticed that Klein first froze, then went to the restroom.
He couldn't help but chuckle, "Lord of the Bathrooms," that's how it goes!
As Hobert chatted with the more opportunistic Leonard, his mind wandered as he pondered who might be looking for Klein.
After some recollection, he remembered that tonight seemed to be the death anniversary of the Great Pirate Qilangos.
