Chapter 298 - The Attic

"From our recent missions, our encounters with ghosts are getting more and more intimate," Xia Meng said. "So, I think that in our next mission, it's not impossible for us to directly obtain the silk pouch from a ghost."

Fatty only needed to recall briefly to realize Xia Meng had a point. According to the doctor last night, the paper figures on their backs had ultimately turned into ghosts.

Now that their thoughts were clear, the priority was to determine the identity of Young Master Huang's new bride and how she died. Only by doing so could they cure Young Master Huang's madness.

This also corresponded to their role as doctors in this scenario.

"By the way, Doctor," Fatty turned to Jiang Cheng. "That house of Young Master Huang also appeared suddenly; it wasn't in the painting before."

"Hmm." Jiang Cheng nodded. "We need to check that house when we have the chance, but now is not the right time."

Fatty looked at the sky and then turned back. "Doctor," he advised, "didn't you always teach me that it's better to do things early rather than late? I'm worried we'll have a close encounter with the female ghost tonight."

"Besides, I think this ghost seems quite calm during the day." He added, "We should use this opportunity to gather more clues so that we have some flexibility at night."

Although Fatty wasn't the smartest among them, his ability to imagine scenarios was unparalleled. He had already thought of at least dozens of ways to "intimately interact" with the female ghost.

As he imagined the ghost chasing him with her several-meter-long tongue, attempting to give him a deep French kiss, Fatty's face turned pale, and he shuddered violently.

Most importantly, according to the doctor's analysis, Young Master Huang was supposed to be human, not a ghost. This only strengthened Fatty's resolve to explore Young Master Huang's attic.

Xia Meng couldn't bear it anymore and interrupted, "Your doctor isn't worried about encountering a ghost."

Fatty frowned and was about to speak when he saw the doctor raise his hand.

"Wait a minute." Jiang Cheng said seriously, "Correction: I am not someone's personal belonging, so please don't refer to me as 'your doctor.'"

Fatty's lips twitched. He thought, We're inside a horror scenario. We might not survive tonight. Can't he just drop his act for now?

"I belong to all of humanity," Jiang Cheng raised his head proudly. "I once asked a fortune teller about my destiny. He said that from the moment I was born, I was destined to contribute to the reproduction and continuation of the human race."

Fatty silently closed the conversation window with the doctor.

Xia Meng balled up her fists.

After breakfast, thanks to Fatty's deliberate efforts, Jiang Cheng and Xia Meng finally continued their previous conversation.

"If not ghosts, then what are you worried about?" Fatty asked, bringing up the topic again. "Young Master Huang?"

"With the way he looks, if he's really human and not a ghost, I could take on ten of him," Fatty said in a low voice. "Without breaking a sweat."

"What about his servants?" Xia Meng gave him a look like she was caring for a special-needs child. "Do you think they'd just stand there and watch him get beaten up?"

Fatty thought for a moment. She had a point. In TV dramas, large households always had lackeys who bullied the weak and snatched women.

Every time he saw that, it made Fatty furious.

Jiang Cheng shared the same irritation, but for a different reason.

Fatty was outraged at how the rich and powerful abused ordinary people. Meanwhile, the doctor regretted not being born centuries earlier into a wealthy family where he could have been one of those playboy tyrants himself.

Shaking off the strange thoughts in his head, Fatty licked his lips. "So, what do you guys think we should do?"

Exploring Young Master Huang's attic without alerting others—none of them were confident about that.

"You guys… you guys are here?" Someone ran over from a distance, panting heavily. His chin was covered in stubble, and in just a few days inside the scenario, You Qi looked several years older.

"Are you looking for us?"

You Qi gasped for breath and said, "We found Qin Jian."

---

By the riverside, a human-shaped figure was covered under a cloth. Zuo Jing and a few others stood beside it in silence, as if mourning. But even Fatty could tell it was all just a pretense.

Fatty didn't dare go up to look. He just stretched his neck from the back to peek.

Jiang Cheng and Xia Meng stepped forward.

Jiang Cheng bent slightly and lifted a corner of the cloth. After observing for a moment, he covered it again. Unlike Xia Meng, whose face remained cold throughout, Jiang Cheng actually bowed to Qin Jian before leaving.

Then, under Fatty's stunned gaze, he went over to Zuo Jing, Chen Qiang, and the others standing nearby, shaking hands with each of them one by one.

Fatty was dumbfounded.

"Doctor," he quickly asked as Jiang Cheng calmly walked back, "what happened to Qin Jian? How did he die?"

Jiang Cheng, still in his dramatic acting mode, exuded an air of mourning. He sniffled slightly and, after composing himself, whispered to Fatty, "Qin Jian said he's doing fine. Told you not to worry about him and to live your own life well. If you have time, burn some paper money for him. Over there, there's no marriage law, so he can still take concubines and remarry."

Fatty's head buzzed as he stared at the corpse covered by the cloth. If Qin Jian's spirit were watching, he'd probably be so pissed at the doctor's nonsense that he'd come back to life.

Avoiding the doctor's gaze, Fatty turned to Xia Meng with a hopeful look.

"Same as Tang Shirou," Xia Meng said indifferently. "His skin was stripped off, and parts of his flesh and internal organs were missing—probably eaten by the fish in the lake."

"Who found the body?" Jiang Cheng asked, tilting his head.

Chen Qiang seemed about to answer, but when he noticed Zuo Jing looking at him, he shut his mouth. Eventually, Zuo Jing glanced at Jiang Cheng and said calmly, "It was Shi Liao Zhi."

"Where is he now?"

"Over there," Zuo Jing gestured. "He was traumatized, and Mr. An is with him."

The moment Jiang Cheng and Xia Meng heard An Xuan's name, they immediately walked over. Passing through a small grove, they heard soft words of comfort.

Following the voice, they found An Xuan sitting beside Shi Liao Zhi.

Shi Liao Zhi looked deeply disturbed. When he suddenly saw Jiang Cheng and the others emerge from the trees, he flinched and his expression darkened.

"I'll talk to them," An Xuan stood up and approached. His voice was gentle. "Mr. Shi is still unstable. Please don't disturb him. You can ask me any questions instead."

Jiang Cheng exhaled and gave An Xuan a sincere look. Then, stepping forward, he grasped An Xuan's hands, shaking them firmly.

"Mr. An, you are truly a good person. Miss Tang Shirou's spirit will surely bless you."
