Excitement
Christopher saw it before he sensed it.
Rather, he didn't sense it. Despite looking straight at the... thing, his senses didn't pick it up at all.
On the fringes of the area that was illuminated by his lantern, a figure loomed ominously.
It seemed vaguely humanoid. 'Seemed' was used because the entity couldn't exactly be defined as it didn't seem to be there at all. In fact, Christopher was confident the entity wasn't humanoid at all, and the only reason he registered it as such was that his brain was trying to fill in the gaps and make sense of what he was looking at, despite the fact that his other senses didn't capture the entity in the first place.
Calling it unnerving was an understatement, and even Christopher had to drop his lax demeanor.
