A black armored car suddenly screeched to a halt on the cracked, weed-ridden road. Its presence was jarring against the desolate wilderness. From their hiding spots, they peered cautiously at the vehicle, its surface glinting faintly under the sun's oppressive rays.
The driver's door opened with a creak, and a man stepped out. His military jacket clung tightly to his sweat-soaked frame, the matching cap pulled low to obscure his eyes. He moved quickly, yanking open the car's rear door. The metallic clatter of a rifle filled the air as he pulled it free and aimed it skyward. His hands shook slightly.
"I think it's gone now," he muttered, his voice unsteady.
From inside the car, a muffled voice snapped, "Get back inside. Let's get out of here before it comes back."
The man hesitated for only a moment before clambering back in. The car's engine roared to life, and it sped down the road, kicking up a trail of dust behind it.
