Between Lilycove City and Mossdeep City, there is only Route 124, a waterway that connects the two locations.
The waterway is not especially long, but it still took Chris two hours to traverse. During this time, Chris searched for items and used Sweet Scent to attract Pokémon. Additionally, because this area is primarily water, fishing with a Fishing Rod was necessary to encounter different types of Pokémon.
Using Surf, Chris encountered Pelipper and Tentacruel. However, fishing yielded a different set of Pokémon: Magikarp, Tentacool, Wailmer, and Sharpedo. Some areas of the waterway are darker and deeper, indicating spots where a Dive move could be used. Pokémon found underwater are distinct from those encountered via Surfing or fishing.
While using Sweet Scent, Chris noticed that the Pokémon appearing were the same as before, so he decided not to pursue additional Pokémon actively. As he passed an isolated island in the sea, Chris discovered a small house with an old man inside who shared stories. The man also had a unique habit of exchanging evolution stones for colored shards. Red shards could be exchanged for Fire Stones, green for Leaf Stones, and yellow for Thunder Stones. The quality of the evolution stones increased with the number of shards offered, with thresholds of one, ten, one hundred, and one thousand shards.
The shards were often found on the seafloor, requiring Pokémon with the Dive move to collect them. For now, Chris decided to postpone exploring these deeper areas and headed toward the Mossdeep Gym instead, prioritizing earning the Gym Badge needed before traveling to other regions.
After healing his Pokémon at the Mossdeep City Pokémon Center, Chris proceeded to the Psychic-type Mossdeep Gym. Trainers here were not only skilled Pokémon battlers but also psychic practitioners, using telekinesis, Hypnosis, and telepathy during battles. The Gym Trainers creatively used Confusion to control Poké Balls and even their opponents, employing telepathy to command their Pokémon silently. Despite these challenging tactics, Chris's absolute strength made these obstacles trivial. Each battle lasted no more than three minutes as Chris swept through his opponents effortlessly.
Finally, Chris reached the Gym Leaders, the twin siblings Tate and Liza, to face his ultimate challenge in Mossdeep.
It seems that they are less than 10 years old, yet he's already a Gym Trainer.
These two kids have such a bright future ahead of them~
But no matter how promising they are, now they'll have to face defeat at my hands!
The scene shifted. Chris stood firmly on the gymnasium floor, opposite the twin Gym Leaders, Tate and Liza, who floated mid-air using their psychic powers.
Liza: "Welcome!"
Tate: "Challenger!"
Liza: "We are the Gym Leaders of Mossdeep City."
Tate: "Bet you didn't expect this—a gym with two leaders!"
Liza: "As twin siblings, we've been connected since we were kids."
Tate: "That's why this battle is different from other gyms you've challenged!"
Tate and Liza: "The battle rules are doubles!"
Chris observed the duo quietly as they spoke in perfect sync. "Mind-to-heart communication, huh? What a waste not to use this skill for comedy routines," he thought dryly.
As for the double battle rules, Chris was already well-prepared before challenging the gym. Turning to the referee, he asked, "Can we start?"
Seeing Chris so composed, Liza pouted in annoyance. "Tate, he's ignoring us!"
"It's fine," Tate reassured her, hands on his hips. "Let's show him how strong we siblings are!"
The referee raised his hand, announcing the rules of the battle. "This is the Mossdeep City Gym Challenge. Trainer Chris will face Gym Leaders Tate and Liza. The battle rules are doubles. Each side will use two Pokémon. When one Trainer has no usable Pokémon remaining, the match ends!"
"The Gym Leaders will send their Pokémon first!"
Tate and Liza threw their Poké Balls simultaneously, silver light flashing as two Pokémon appeared on the battlefield: Solrock and Lunatone.
Chris immediately recognized the pair. They were the same Psychic- and Rock-type Pokémon he had encountered while training at Meteor Falls. He found them particularly annoying back then, given their typing and Levitate ability.
"Each side can send out only two Pokémon. A battle where the outcome is decided so quickly?" Chris murmured. He had already decided which Pokémon he'd use.
"Let's do this!" Chris declared, throwing two Poké Balls high into the air.
The Poké Balls opened mid-flight. One released a stream of water, gracefully landing on the battlefield, while the other crashed into the ground with a heavy thud.
Chris sent out Greninja and Tyranitar—a combination that had carried him through countless battles. Tyranitar's Sand Stream ability activated as soon as it entered the battlefield, summoning a sandstorm that swirled ominously around the arena.
However, just as the sandstorm began to gather strength, Tyranitar exerted its control and suppressed it entirely. The swirling sand settled instantly, showcasing Tyranitar's exceptional mastery of its weather-altering ability.
Chris knew why he had chosen not to let the sandstorm rage. While Tyranitar benefited from the boosted special defense provided by sandstorm conditions, it also posed significant disadvantages in this battle. Both Solrock and Lunatone were Rock-types, meaning they would gain the same special defense boost from the sandstorm, making them even tougher to bring down. Furthermore, the storm would harm Greninja every turn, putting Chris's strategy at a disadvantage.
"Doubles battles require teamwork and foresight," Chris thought. "It's not just about individual strength. Every move needs to consider your partner."
Tate and Liza were momentarily caught off guard by Chris's choices. The presence of Greninja and Tyranitar, both part Dark-type Pokémon, threw the Psychic-specialist twins into a bind. Psychic moves were completely ineffective against Dark-types, rendering a significant portion of their strategy useless.
"It's like we've already lost an arm before the battle even begins," Tate muttered, narrowing his eyes.
Liza clenched her fists. "We can't underestimate him. We've dealt with tough challengers before!"
The referee glanced at both sides to confirm they were ready. Raising his hand, he declared, "Let the battle begin!" and swung his arm downward.
The twins exchanged a nod, and their first commands echoed through the gym. "Solrock, Sunny Day!" "Lunatone, Calm Mind!"
Chris smirked. "Let's end this quickly. Greninja, Dark Pulse! Tyranitar, Crunch!"
The battle commenced, and the gym was immediately filled with the tension of the twins trying to outmaneuver Chris's overwhelming strategy.
