KIERAN
"I think my water just broke."
The moment the statement landed into my ears and sank into my brain, I got frozen. Rooted to the spot.
My legs stopped working.
If my wife said her water was broken, I think it only meant one thing. She was in labor.
And automatically… the first thought that came to my head was this.
The baby was coming.
Shit.
It wasn't up to nine months yet. If Edwina gave birth right now the baby would be premature. And would likely die.
My heart was pounding in my chest now, drowning out all other sounds.
"For the love of God, Kieran, get your ass out there and call a doctor," Edwina yelled. The sharpness in her voice snapped me out of my stupor, and I turned around, my legs propelling me towards the door.
Almost immediately, I came back in with the doctor. The nurses on night duty wheeled in a stretcher and helped my wife on it before they wheeled her away.
