NOAH
Ciara and I said nothing as I drove. The car was silent, and filled with some sort of weird tension.
I was pretty sure she was crying, but her face was turned away from me, and there was not even a whimper.
But I saw the tears in the curve of her shoulders, and in the way she held her entire body rigidly.
My heart ached for her. All I wanted was for things to go smoothly between us, but the universe seemed to have made us a case study for every single obstacle.
I wish there was something I could do, a way to take us away from here — from our lives — even just for a little while.
But as soon as I had the thought, I realized that I did have a choice. I couldn't take us away forever, but I could do it for a little while. Enough to make things sturdy and a little bit steadier between us.
