Chapter 1 - The Transfer Student

--------------------

The sun hung high over Seidou's baseball field, casting long shadows as the team practiced. The air was thick with the familiar sounds of balls hitting mitts, metal cleats scraping against dirt, and the occasional shout of encouragement. Eijun Sawamura stood near the bullpen, wiping the sweat from his brow. He watched Furuya pitch with his typical precision, the fastball slicing through the air with deadly accuracy.

The spring tournament was just around the corner, and everyone was pushing themselves harder than ever.

Just as Eijun was about to return to the mound, Coach Kataoka's voice cut through the field. "Gather up, everyone."

Curious, Eijun jogged over to where the coach stood, along with the rest of the team. Next to him was a new face a boy with jet black hair and piercing gray eyes. He stood quietly, hands in his pockets, an air of calm detachment about him.

"This is Asahi Kuroda," Coach Kataoka announced. "He's a transfer student from Hokkaido and will be joining us for the upcoming season."

The team exchanged glances. It wasn't often that Seidou got transfer students, especially ones who joined mid-season.

"Yo!" Eijun shouted, stepping forward with his trademark grin. "Welcome to Seidou! Are you a pitcher? Batter? Outfielder?"

Asahi's gaze flickered to Eijun, and for a moment, something unspoken passed between them. His eyes were guarded, distant, as if he were holding back a part of himself.

"I'll be playing outfield," Asahi said simply.

Murmurs spread through the team. Outfielders were always welcome, but there was something about the way Asahi carried himself that made Eijun wonder if there was more to his story.

-------

Later that day, Eijun was working on his curveball in the bullpen when something caught his eye. Out on the far edge of the field, Asahi stood alone, practicing his throws to the home plate. Eijun watched as Asahi launched the ball from deep in the outfield—a throw that seemed impossible, yet the ball flew through the air with precision and power, landing perfectly in the catcher's mitt.

Eijun's eyes widened. That wasn't the throw of a typical outfielder.

His curiosity piqued, Eijun approached Asahi after practice, still buzzing with excitement. "Hey! That throw of yours—it's incredible! Have you ever pitched before?"

Asahi's expression darkened for a split second, but he quickly masked it with indifference. "I've pitched. But that was a long time ago."

"Why'd you stop?" Eijun asked, genuinely intrigued.

Asahi hesitated, his gaze dropping to the ground. "I had my reasons."

Before Eijun could press further, Miyuki approached, having noticed the exchange. His eyes glinted with interest behind his glasses. "Sawamura's right, Kuroda. That throw wasn't just a good outfield play. You've got a pitcher's arm."

Asahi met Miyuki's gaze, but something cold flickered in his eyes. "I'm not here to pitch."

With that, he turned and walked away, leaving Eijun and Miyuki standing there, exchanging a glance of confusion and curiosity.

Eijun's fists clenched, his determination flaring. "There's something more to him, Miyuki-senpai. I can feel it. He's hiding something."

Miyuki smirked. "Well then, Sawamura, I guess it's up to you to drag it out of him."

Eijun grinned, his competitive spirit ignited. "You can count on it."
