Chapter 62 - 61: Saving a Life is More Meritorious than Building a Seven-Story Pagoda

My name is Otosaka Yuu, a first-year student at Hinomori Private High School, and also the top student of my grade.

With my outstanding looks and reputation as an academic ace, the number of admirers I have at school is practically endless.

But how could I ever be interested in those ordinary girls? My goal has always been just one person—the goddess of the academy, Shirayanagi Yumi.

It might be hard to believe, but I possess a supernatural ability that defies the laws of physics.

I can project myself into another person... I can take over the body of anyone within my line of sight for five seconds.

However, during those five seconds, my own body remains unconscious, which often results in injuries.

But even five seconds is enough!

I thought I could use my superior looks and unique ability to dominate my school life.

If I weren't about to get run over by a massive truck right now, I might have actually believed that.

At this moment, a runaway truck was only inches away from Otosaka Yuu.

Beside him, Yumi stood frozen, staring blankly at the approaching vehicle, completely caught in the moment of a life-flashing-before-her-eyes experience.

Originally, Otosaka Yuu thought that with his ability, he could minimize any unexpected incidents, but he had clearly overestimated himself.

First, he used his power to send Yumi's friends away. Then, he controlled the exhausted truck driver to steer the vehicle toward Yumi just as she exited the school gate.

He thought he had everything under control.

But judging by the situation now… that clearly wasn't the case.

"Sorry, Ayumi..."

In the final moments of his life, Otosaka Yuu saw the image of his little sister, Ayumi, flashing through his mind, filling him with endless regret.

Unlike Otosaka Yuu's current despair, Hakuto, watching from a distance, was rolling his eyes so hard they could almost reach the sky.

"Seriously? If you're this bad at it, maybe just don't play the game?"

Just as the truck was about to make intimate contact with both Yumi and Otosaka Yuu, Hakuto sighed helplessly and activated his ability.

Even though he had already used his ability quite a few times today, a human life was at stake—he couldn't just stand by and watch.

Due to the urgency of the situation, Hakuto pushed his ability to full power, freezing the world around him once again.

Walking over to the runaway truck, Hakuto took in the sight before him—Otosaka Yuu's face was still twisted in panic and regret.

As for Yumi, she probably hadn't even recovered from her near-death flashback yet. She remained in a dazed state.

"You two owe me one..."

Hakuto took out a small notebook and quietly wrote down this debt.

After all, he was the type to record even the smallest things, let alone something as significant as saving lives.

Once that was done, Hakuto opened the truck's door and adjusted the driver's position, carefully tweaking his grip on the steering wheel.

After calculating the trajectory and ensuring no casualties would occur, Hakuto nodded in satisfaction and closed the door.

However, because Yumi and Otosaka Yuu were too close to the danger zone, no matter how he adjusted the driver's movements, they were still in a fatal position.

Seeing this, Hakuto let out another sigh and tone down his power before scooping up the dazed Yumi in his arms and grabbing Otosaka Yuu by the collar with his other hand, dragging both of them out of harm's way.

After completing all necessary adjustments, Hakuto ran one last calculation to confirm that the damage had been reduced to a minimum.

Satisfied, he snapped his fingers and deactivated his ability.

The frozen world resumed its motion.

What should have been a scene with at least two casualties had now, thanks to Hakuto's intervention, resulted in no injuries at all.

"What happened?! The truck lost control?!"

"Someone, go check!"

"Wasn't there a couple of students in front of the truck just now? Where did they go? Were they… thrown into the air?"

"What about the driver? Is he okay?"

"Looks like she just fainted."

Seeing that he had just saved multiple families from tragedy, Hakuto couldn't help but feel a little smug. He was practically a savior.

Then, he turned his head to look at Yumi, whom he was still holding in one arm.

At that moment, Yumi's eyes were blank, clearly still in shock from what had just happened.

But in the next second, as she remained in Hakuto's arms, her whole body trembled slightly, and her eyes gradually regained focus.

"Huh?"

She stared in confusion at the truck that had crashed into the wall ahead, as if wondering why she wasn't dead.

"Since you're awake, hurry up and get down. Holding you like this is tiring."

"Huh? You are…?"

Hakuto didn't answer. Instead, he flicked her forehead with his finger before gently setting her down.

After that, as if casually, he gave Otosaka Yuu, who was at his feet, a small kick.

Hakuto looked at Yumi and smiled warmly.

"Remember, you owe me a life."

"And you too, you bastard!"

Otosaka Yuu looked up in confusion at Hakuto, who had just kicked him.

"You… How did you save me?"

Hearing this, Hakuto crouched down and whispered into Otosaka Yuu's ear.

"What's the matter? Feels strange? But you have a similar kind of ability, don't you?"

After saying that, Hakuto flashed a carefree smile at Otosaka Yuu, whose expression was caught between confusion and fear.

"But remember, you owe me a life."

Just as Hakuto was about to stand up, the red-haired girl who had been sent away earlier by Otosaka Yuu's ability suddenly came running over to Yumi in a panic.

"Yumi! Yumi! I thought you were done for!"

"What… just happened?"

"I don't know either… The truck suddenly lost control, and by the time I realized what was happening, that guy over there was already holding you."

Hearing that, Yumi finally snapped back to reality and turned to look at Hakuto.

"…Was it you who saved me?"

"Didn't I just say you owe me a life?"

"If you can still move, go to the infirmary and get checked. Just in case you have any lingering injuries."

With that, Hakuto waved his hand and prepared to leave. After all, a certain white-haired girl with a camera was still waiting for him nearby.

"Wait… please wait…"

Seeing Hakuto about to leave, Yumi panicked and instinctively tried to stop him.

However, just as she took a step forward, a sharp pain shot through her lower leg, causing her to lose control and fall forward.

Fortunately, Hakuto hadn't gone far. Instead of hitting the ground, Yumi ended up leaning completely against his back.

Well… looks like you really can't move."

"N-no… I just didn't realize my leg was injured…"
