Chapter 6 - Into The Abyss

Fence couldn't shake the feeling that time was running out. After receiving Sam's cryptic warning, she knew she had to act fast. She turned to Tim, who was still standing nearby waiting for her next move.

"Get the team to look into Luke Davis's connections. I need everything--past associates, criminal history, anything that ties him to Sam." Her voice was firm, the professional detective she had become since taking on the job.

Tim nodded and walked off to relay the orders, but Fence's mind was somewhere else. She couldn't ignore the gnawing suspicion that her brother had stumbled onto something far bigger then he realized.

The more she thought about it, the more she began to connect the dots between this case and the unsolved murders that had plagued the area years ago. All those bodies found along Route 8--could they be linked to Luke Davis?

She needed answers and she needed them fast. As she drove back towards the station, the weight of the situation pressed on her chest. Her phone buzzed again. This time it was an email--one that made her stop dead in her tracks. The subject line read:

URGENT: The DavisFile. She opened it immediately.

In some of the documents--confidential reports that appeared to have come from someone inside the department. One of the photos was a grainy image of Sam standing outside the building, looking disheveled, as though he had just come from a confrontation. Another showed a man that she doesn't recognised, standing in the shadows, his face obscured. But the most chilling part of the email was the message at the bottom:

"He's been compromised. Get him before it's too late."

Her heart pounded. The situation was worse then she imagined. Sam was involved in something dangerous and if she didn't find him soon, he might not make it out alive.

Fence slammed her foot on the gas pedal, her determination overriding her fear. Route 8 was the key--there was no doubt about it. But as she sped toward the highway, she couldn't shake the feeling that the path she was on would lead her into a far deeper abyss than she was ready to face.
