Chapter 79 - The Star System

A couple of days passed by pretty fast.

Chase was sitting on his bed, alone in his comfortable dorm room. Quietly reading the ancient book that Professor Barren had given him on the first day of combat classes.

Both him and Gabriel had made their way out of The Underbelly without any real trouble, although this one beggar offered to do some strange things for the boys, which Chase nearly busted out laughing at the very memory of.

Then he had to remind himself that he wasn't supposed to laugh at things like that, and concentrated back on his book.

He let out a sigh, as he remembered that soon he would have to get ready for the day. The sun was just barely appearing over the horizon outside of the large window on the other side of the cozy room.

Chase had started a small fire in the fireplace, as winter was soon to come.

He had learned that in the mountains snow was very rare, and because of The Pyrothar, it never got that cold either.

But if he was being honest, Chase just liked the sight of the fire dancing in the corner of his room.

It gave him a strange comfort to see how peaceful, yet angry a fire could look.

Shaking the thoughts of a pyromaniac away, he picked back up on his reading.

Chase was quite nervous today, as a little before sunset, the third game of the aetherball season would begin, and he had earned himself a spot as one of the starting attackers.

He rubbed his face roughly, as his eyes darted to his bedside table, where five golden coins were stacked on top of each other.

'I really wish I could find a Vox.'

Currently, the section on the book that he was on, was solely focused on Vox's and something called The Star System.

Chase had noticed that a lot of the students had a Vox, but never really wore it outside of Primis insight, and some combat classes.

He always wondered why they never wore something that could show them their current output, and even true potential.

Voxes were strange, as they seemed like something that was completely ahead of all technology in the world.

They displayed all sorts of information about the person wearing it on a small magical screen.

After reading about them in the library, and asking Vivian an ungodly amount of questions about them: He had learned that they were powered by source of energy called Aether. That was harnessed from a place called the void.

Chase flipped to the next page, and scratched his shoulder.

A Vox was essential to him because of the way they displayed information. They showed one's true affinity, as well as ways to grow ones energy output, and that was extremely important.

Energy output is also known as one big scale, that measured someone's true power that they currently possessed.

They are also displayed as a sort of "Star" system. Where zero stars would mean someone does not even had the ability to use energy. While twelve stars was considered the output of a Paladin.

However, there were plenty of other factors involved as well. There were usually numbers involved that were built into a metric system, but most people never really cared about that, and only focused on the stars.

He found himself even more interested in the ancient texts, as he wiped a piece of dust off of the next page.

There was a vast gap between someone who possessed eight star output, and someone who had a nine star output, or there could be a very small gap, it all depended on how high the number of your star level was.

But the amount of energy one could produce was not the only factor related to the output system. As one's output grows their physical energy, Primis, and even Mental energy grows along with it.

Meaning that someone with an eleven star output would have enhanced eyesight, physical strength, and even faster reflexes.

Some even say that the brain and one's looks grow with it, but that is usually considered a myth because of how little people actually have the potential to reach higher then five or six stars.

Hence the potential system, where at the age of around sixteen one's body finally grows accustomed to all of its affinities and gives itself a set limiter, known as potential.

Obviously output was not the only factor in a fight, as someone with better skill could easily close the gap between them and a much higher output fighter.

Affinities played a huge part as well, as many people have weaknesses and flaws, such as water and fire. Or even emotional weaknesses, that could play a part in a fight.

One's planning and quick thinking could even be the sole determiner in a battle against a very strong opponent; however, that was all on very rare occasions, as it is a very wide known fact that most of the time, a nine star would absolutely destroy an eight star.

Chase knew that wasn't the main factor though, as he himself had killed things far higher then what his current output would be.

He also had a theory that if he had a vox, he could figure out how to summon Sparky.

His heart skipped a beat, as the possibility of bringing his canine friend back ignited within his mind.

Voxes had the ability to show one's lumens, and even summons. So if Chase could just find one that he could buy for a half decent price, he immediately take the offer.

Part of him wishes that he should have convinced Gabriel to let him look around the black market, in hopes of finding a Vox that he could have purchases.

In fact the possibility of returning was gnawing at his mind, but he had other important matters he had to complete beforehand.

Suddenly he looked up from the book, and nearly jumped out of his bed.

"Gods Damnit all!"

Yup, he was very very late to class, as both the Sun, and the much smaller Pyrothar were decently above the horizon.

Chase quickly crawled out of bed and ran into the bathroom, grabbing his uniform, and his bag on his way.

'I really need to stop doing that...'

He thought with a sigh, as he shut the bathroom door.
