The sea was calm, with gentle waves lapping against the boat. The sails of the small vessel fluttered softly in the breeze, guiding it steadily across the open water. At the front of the boat, Lucy sat comfortably, her straw hat perched jauntily on her head. A wide grin spread across her face as she breathed in the salty air, enjoying the freedom of the sea.
Selina and Uta were busily attempting to catch fish, as they patiently waited for the line to tug. Ace, on the other hand, leaned casually against the side of the boat, her gaze fixed on the horizon as the world passed by.
At the wheel, Ash stood with a focused expression, guiding the boat with steady hands, following Nami's directions. The journey had begun just the day before, leaving Foosha Island behind. The crew was adjusting to life on the sea, with excitement building as the days passed.
"How much longer until we reach the nearest island?" Ash asked, his voice carrying over to Nami, who was poring over a map.
"There's an island called Wavestone nearby," Nami replied, glancing up from the map with a small smile. "We should be reaching there by late afternoon."
Ash nodded, impressed. "You're getting really good at this, Nami."
Nami's cheeks flushed a shade of pink at the praise, and she couldn't help but grin, a bit flustered. "Thanks! I've had a lot of practice. Lucy's dad introduced me to some great navigators, and after spending last two years sailing the East Blue, I've learned to predict the weather and sea currents more easily."
Ash smiled, pleased with Nami's growth. "You're becoming a great navigator."
With the sun climbing higher, Ash decided it was time to start cooking. "Alright, I'm going to start preparing lunch," he said, glancing at the sky.
Lucy's ears perked up at the mention of food. She quickly jumped from her spot; her eyes practically sparkling as she rushed over to Ash. "Ash, you're starting to cook now, right?" she asked eagerly, a wide smile on her face.
Before she could get too close, however, Ace stepped in, holding Lucy back by the collar of her shirt. "You'll just end up eating everything before anyone else gets a chance," Ace teased with a smirk.
Ash chuckled, shaking his head. "Lucy, wait just a bit longer. I've got snacks for you," he said, pulling some light, bite-sized snacks from his inventory. Lucy grumbled but quickly started munching on the treats, her impatience at least momentarily satisfied.
As Selina and Uta presented the fish they'd caught, Ash took over, preparing a meal for the crew. The air soon filled with the mouthwatering scent of cooking fish, and everyone's stomachs growled in anticipation.
The girls gathered around as Ash served the meal, each of them expressing their appreciation for his cooking skills.
While eating, the girls complimented Ash's cooking skills. "Ash, your cooking just keeps getting better every day!" Nami said, her mouth full of food.
Lucy grinned; her mouth still full. "I'll eat anything Ash cooks! It's always amazing."
Ash laughed. "Thanks, but just so you know, there are plenty of better cooks out there in the vast sea."
Uta shrugged and smiled. "We don't care," she said simply, and the others nodded in agreement.
Ash smiled, pleased to see how much everyone enjoyed the meal. "Glad to hear it. I'll do my best to keep you all well-fed."
After finishing their meal, the crew decided to pass the time by playing games. Laughter filled the boat as they engaged in various small competitions. However, as the game progressed, Lucy's mischievous side kicked in, and she began subtly bending the rules in her favor.
Ace, ever observant, caught onto her tricks. "Hey! You're cheating, Lucy!" she accused, pointing at her with narrowed eyes.
Lucy gasped, placing a hand over her chest in mock offense. "Me? Cheat? How could you accuse your dear sister of such a thing?" she said dramatically.
"You totally did!" Ace shot back.
"I did not!" Lucy huffed, crossing her arms.
The argument quickly escalated as Uta and Nami got dragged into the chaos.
"Lucy, just admit it!" Uta pulled at Lucy's cheeks.
"Ow! Argh! Uta, you too!" Lucy whined.
Ace, refusing to let her go, grabbed Lucy by the collar, preparing to deliver a well-earned punishment. "No excuses! Take your loss like a champ!"
Meanwhile, Nami, already frustrated, cracked her knuckles. "This is what happens when you mess with my game!" she said, reaching out to grab Lucy's cheek.
On the sidelines, Ash and Selina simply watched, chuckling at the mess unfolding before them.
However, the playful scuffle came to an abrupt halt when Ash's voice cut through the air, filled with sudden seriousness.
"Guys, stop it!" he shouted.
The shift in his tone made everyone freeze in place. The fight halted with Lucy biting Ace's leg, Uta still pulling Lucy's cheek, Ace gripping Lucy's collar with a clenched fist ready to punch, and Nami's hand mid-swing toward Lucy's face.
All their eyes turned toward Ash, who was now focused on something ahead. Selina, standing beside him, was already looking in the same direction, her expression turning serious.
Ahead of them, a pirate ship was attacking another vessel, and chaos was unfolding on the sea.
The atmosphere shifted. Lucy's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Yosh! Finally, some action! Ash, let's go help them!"
Ash nodded. "Nami, take the wheel and keep yourself hidden once we get close."
Nami gave a firm nod, quickly adjusting the sails to change their course.
Meanwhile, Ash turned to the others. "And guys… wear the masks."
With a silent understanding, Ash and the girls, excluding Nami, reached into their inventory and pulled out their own masks. The moment they put them on, their appearances shifted, transforming into their carefully planned disguises.
A soft glow enveloped them as the enchantment activated, reshaping their attire into sleek, assassin-like outfits. Hooded cloaks wrapped around them, their colors distinct tactical, and intimidating. Their faces were partially concealed by the masks, allowing only their piercing eyes to be visible beneath the shadows of their hoods.
But that wasn't the only change.
Their bodies stretched, limbs lengthening as their childlike forms were replaced with taller, adult-like physiques. Their voices, if heard, would carry a deeper, more mature tone. To any outsider, they no longer resembled a group of kids—but instead, an elite team of seasoned hunters.
As their boat neared the scene, Ash and the girls moved in perfect sync. With a single motion, they kicked off the deck and soared through the air using Geppo, their figures cutting through the sky like specter's of the wind.
From above, they scanned the chaos below. A pirate, his blade raised high, was about to cleave down on a helpless family—a man, clearly wealthy, shielding his wife and young daughter with his own body. Fear was frozen in their eyes as the sword came down—
But it never landed.
Ash's eyes narrowed, and with a sharp pivot in midair, he unleashed Tempest Kick. A slicing gust of compressed air shot down like a scythe, slamming into the pirate's back with a sickening crunch. Blood sprayed into the air as the man let out a choked cry, his body flung forward before collapsing onto the deck.
The remaining pirates halted their actions into stunned silence, their weapons still in hand, turning their furious gazes toward their fallen comrade.
A rugged voice cut through the silence, laced with fury.
"Who dares to do this?!"
The one who spoke stood out—an imposing man with a menacing presence, his stance exuding dominance. From his attire and the way, the other pirates reacted, it was clear—he was the captain of this so-called pirate crew.
Just as his enraged glare landed on the direction of the attack, the air grew heavier.
With perfect timing, Ash and the girls landed on the deck of the merchant ship, their cloaks billowing behind them. Positioned in front of the family, like a shield between them and the enemy.
The pirate captain stepped forward, his boots thudding heavily against the deck. His face twisted in anger as he growled, "Who the hell are you?!"
Lucy, her voice masked in a disguised tone, responded with a smug tilt of her head.
"Oh, we're the ones who are going to beat the shit out of you."
The words struck like a whip, making the captain's face flush red with fury. Veins bulged on his forehead as he clenched his fists.
"How dare you speak to me, Dread-fang Garrot, like that?!" he roared, puffing out his chest. "You fools think you can just come here oppose me and live alive with me The Dread-fang Garrot here—"
His rant continued, his voice booming across the deck as he launched into an arrogant monologue about his strength, reputation, and how foolish it was to challenge him.
Ace, standing lazily with her arms crossed, let out a bored sigh before cutting in with a dragging voice.
"Oy, you ugly, stop your yapping already. Even your own crewmates are struggling to not ignore you."
A few of the surrounding pirates awkwardly glanced at each other, some shifting uncomfortably, clearly used to their captain's long-winded tirades.
Garrot's face turned a deeper shade of red, his rage bubbling over.
Garrot's face twisted in fury as he bellowed, "Get them!"
The pirates surged forward; weapons raised.
Ash, unfazed, swiftly drew Kashu. In one fluid motion, he blocked every sword-wielding pirate rushing at him, holding them back with ease. They tried to overpower him, pushing with all their strength, but with a single mighty sweep of his blade, Ash sent them stumbling backward in a heap.
He smirked. "Oy, oy, oy… didn't your parents teach you that introductions are necessary when meeting new people?"
The sheer force of his push stunned everyone, including the bystanders on the merchant ship. Murmurs spread among them as they marvelled at his strength.
Garrot snarled. "I don't care to learn the names of people who are about to die!"
Ash burst into laughter, his voice carrying through the ship. "Really now?"
Before Garrot could react, Ash vanished. A powerful gust of wind followed as he reappeared right in front of the pirate captain, his speed catching everyone off guard. In the blink of an eye, Ash casually grabbed Garrot's hairy hand and gave it a firm shake.
"Anyways, first, let me thank you."
Before Garrot could retaliate, Ash had already returned to his original spot, standing as if he'd never moved.
With a playful smirk, Ash continued, "You see, we're just getting started as bounty hunters and pirate hunters. Aaaannndd…" He stretched the word out teasingly. "You guys are either really lucky… or really unlucky, because you're about to be our first victim—cough.... I mean…"
He paused for a moment, then quickly corrected himself.
"Our first assignment!"
Hearing this, Selina, Uta, Lucy, and Ace giggled, amused at Ash's poor attempt at covering up his slip.
Garrot's face twisted with indignation as he yelled, baring his sharp teeth. "You clearly said victim! We all heard it!"
Ash, keeping his cool, waved a hand dismissively. "Nah, I think you misheard. I clearly said 'assignment.'"
The pirates around them all comically sprouted shark-like teeth, shouting in unison, "At least try to cover your lie properly if you're gonna convince us!"
Garrot suddenly smirked, crossing his arms as if he had already won. "I see… so you're just rookie hunters with no name. How pathetic." He then extended a hand, his grin widening. "I'll give you weaklings a chance—surrender now and work under me, and I might just spare you."
Ash paused, then turned his head slightly as if looking directly at the audience.
"Typical villain. Do you guys hear this guy?"
For a brief moment, there was silence.
Everyone around him—pirates, hostages, even his own crew—suddenly had exclamation marks pop above their heads, looking at Ash as if he'd lost his mind.
"Oy, Shadow, who the hell are you talking to?" Selina asked, raising an eyebrow.
Ash quickly coughed into his hand, looking away. "No one."
Ash cleared his throat again and turned to a nearby pirate, casually placing a hand on his shoulder as if they were old friends. "Hey, where were we again?"
The pirate, equally casual, responded, "Oh, our captain asked you to join us, or he won't spare you."
Ash nodded thoughtfully, then slammed his right fist into his left palm as if suddenly remembering. "Oh right! Thanks, man."
The pirate gave him a thumbs-up. "No problem."
A second later, another pirate smacked the first one on the head. "Idiot! He's, our enemy!"
The first pirate blinked, realization dawning. "Oh, right. Sorry."
Lucy burst into laughter at the exchange.
Ash turned back to Garrot, smirking. "Garry—sorry, I can call you Garry, right?" He didn't wait for a response. "Never mind. Anyway, Garry, you see… I really don't like your face, so I'll have to reject your offer. As for you sparing us..." He chuckled. "I'll give you a return offer—we outnumber you clearly."
A collective pause.
Garrot and his men, along with the merchant ship's passengers, all wore the same confused/indigent expression. 'You guys are only five. We're more than fifty.'
Ash, seeing their looks, chuckled again. "Alright, here's the deal. You can pick any one of us five. That person will fight all of you. If that person loses, we'll surrender without a fight." He grinned. "I hope you pick me, though. The girls have been itching for a fight for a long time."
Garrot's instincts screamed at him to avoid all five. But his ego refused to listen.
"I pick her!" He pointed at Lucy, who was sitting on the floor, bored of the conversation and absentmindedly drawing circles on the ground.
Lucy blinked, looking up as she noticed all eyes on her. "…What?"
Garrot smirked, seeing her reaction as fear. He thought he had already won. Ash, Selina, Uta, and Ace all slapped their foreheads in unison.
"…Yes, now you have to fight all of them," Ash muttered under his breath.
Lucy, however, immediately perked up hearing that. "Yes! Finally, some action!" She almost blurted out Ash's real name but caught herself. "Shadow, you guys were having such a boring talk. Now let's fight! Who's coming first?"
Beside her, Ace and Selina both clicked their tongues. "Tch, I thought he'd pick me."
Uta chuckled. "It's fine. Ember can handle them. They're weak anyway."
Nearby pirates shot her indignant glares.
Ash laughed, then turned to the others. "Alright, alright. Siren, Crimson, Silver—take care of the injured. Let Ember handle these guys."
He completely ignored the pirates, as if they weren't even there.
Garrot's face turned red with anger, veins bulging at how Ash and Lucy still weren't taking him seriously.
Ash turned to Lucy, completely relaxed. "Ember, finish it fast."
Lucy cracked her knuckles, grinning. "Got it."
"GET HER!" Garrot roared, drawing his sword and pointing it at Lucy.
The pirates rushed at her all at once. Lucy, standing her ground, clenched her fist. The first pirate who got close met a Tekkai-enhanced punch straight to the face. His body flew back like a ragdoll, crashing into the others.
The remaining pirates charged, but Lucy met them head-on. Fists swung, bones cracked, bodies flew. Within minutes, the deck was littered with unconscious or groaning pirates, clutching broken arms, ribs, or other injuries.
Garrot stood frozen, eyes wide with shock and fear.
Lucy dusted off her hands and stretched. "Oh? Only you left, huh?" She motioned at him with a smirk. "Come on then."
Garrot's grip tightened around his sword. He felt fear creeping in, but Lucy's mocking expression made his pride snap. With a roar, he charged at her.
"You're dead!"
Lucy didn't move. She just stood there, completely relaxed.
Garrot's sword swung down with all his might—
CLANG!
His blade shattered on impact against Lucy's arm.
The entire deck went silent. Shards of metal rained down.
Garrot stood there, shaking. The merchant ship's crew and the remaining pirates stared, jaws hanging open.
Lucy chuckled. "Haha, not so soon!"
Before Garrot could react, she clenched her fist and drove it into his gut.
A shockwave burst out.
Garrot's eyes bulged as he spat out saliva and blood. His body lifted off the ground, soaring high into the air.
Everyone—pirates, merchants—watched in stunned silence.
Lucy raised a hand to shield her eyes from the sun, watching him fly. "Wow…" She whistled. "Haha! I think I used a bit too much strength!"
She laughed heartily as Garrot disappeared into the sky.
Ash walked up to Lucy with a sigh and casually bonked her on the head.
"Heyyy…!" Lucy whined, rubbing the spot.
Ash crossed his arms. "Ember, you sent him flying. How do you expect to collect our first bounty now?"
Lucy let out a sheepish laugh. "Oops… Sorry, Shadow. I thought he could take a punch. Guess I overdid it! Hahaha!"
Ash shook his head with another sigh and glanced up.
From the sky, Garrot's unconscious body was plummeting back down.
With a quick jump, Ash caught him over his shoulder before he could crash into the deck. Landing lightly, he dropped the unconscious pirate without a care.
Ash and Uta then started rounding up the fallen pirates. Selina helped, making sure their captain, Garrot, was secured as well. One by one, they were tied up on the deck.
Once they finished, Ash turned to the others and grinned. "Guys! This is our first job done! Great work!" The group exchanged high-fives in celebration.
Ace crossed his arms with a pout. "Tch. I still think Ember got lucky fighting these weaklings. Next time, I'm gonna show my power. Just wait!"
Selina nodded. "Yeah, me too! I want a good fight next time."
Ash laughed, placing his hands on his hips. "Don't worry. We've still got plenty of time before heading back."
Just then, the little girl they had saved earlier approached Ash. She tugged at his sleeve and looked up at him with big, grateful eyes.
"Onii-chan, thank you for saving us!"
Ash turned to her, then knelt down with a warm smile and ruffled her hair. "You're welcome, kid."
The little girl beamed, and soon her parents came forward as well. Her mother and father gently pulled her back before bowing respectfully.
"Thank you so much for saving us," the mother said sincerely.
Ash waved a hand dismissively. "It's fine. No need to bow or anything."
The father, still looking deeply grateful, shook his head. "No… you all are our saviors. You saved our lives."
Straightening up, he placed a hand on his chest and introduced himself.
"My name is Edric Vale. This is my merchant ship." He then gestured to the woman beside him. "This is my wife, Selene," he said warmly.
Finally, he patted his daughter's head with a gentle smile. "And this little bundle of joy is our daughter, Lilia.
Edric continued, his voice filled with gratitude. "We were ambushed by these pirates while on our way back to our island. If you hadn't arrived when you did… I can't imagine what would have happened. You saved us at the perfect time."
He looked at Ash and the others with genuine curiosity. "May I know the names of the people who saved us?"
Ash gave a nod. "Sure."
He then gestured toward himself first. "You can call me Shadow."
Then, pointing at Lucy, he introduced her. "This is Ember."
Next, he motioned toward Uta. "Siren."
Then Ace. "Crimson."
And finally, Selina. "Silver."
With a confident smirk, Ash finished,
"We go by the name Phantom Vortex."
Lilia's eyes sparkled with admiration. "Onii-chan, you guys are so cool!"
Ash's nose inflated at the praise, an imaginary glow of pride surrounding him.
Seeing this, Uta let out a sigh before lightly bonking him on the head. "Don't let it get to your head, Shadow."
Edric and Selene chuckled at the playful interaction, amused by the camaraderie between the group.
Edric then spoke, "You all are good people. By the way, where are you sailing to?"
Ash responded, "Yeah, we're on our way to Wavestone Island."
Edric's eyes widened in surprise. "Oh! What a coincidence—that's exactly where we were headed back to!"
Selina tilted her head. "Really? Is there a Marine base on that island?"
Edric nodded. "Yes, there is."
Ace smirked. "Nice. That means we can dump these idiots off there and collect our reward." She pointed at Garrot and his defeated crew.
Ash clapped his hands together. "Alright then, can you guide us there?"
Edric gave a firm nod before turning to the captain of his ship. "Start sailing toward Wavestone Island!"
With that settled, Ash and Uta made their way back to their own small sailboat, where Nami had been hiding the entire time. Meanwhile, Selina, Ace, and Lucy stayed aboard the merchant ship, keeping an eye on the prisoners in case any of them tried to escape.
As Ash landed back onto their boat, he immediately noticed something—Nami was grinning ear to ear.
Curious, he asked, "You look happy. Something good happen?"
Nami's smile widened as she proudly revealed, "Ash, those pirates may have been idiots… but they had a great haul! I looted their ship and took all their money!"
Ash burst into laughter. "As expected of you, Nami!"
Nami grinned proudly. "I got more than couple million Belis from them!"
Hearing that, Uta excitedly hugged Nami, both of them cheering in celebration.
Ash shook his head with a small smile before informing Nami about everything that had happened. With that done, he took the wheel of their boat, following Edric's ship toward Wavestone Island.
A couple of hours later, as the island became visible on the horizon, Nami separated from them using a small boat attached to their vessel. Since she couldn't be seen with them, she waved goodbye.
"Take care!" Uta called out.
Ash added, "We'll be staying at an inn or someplace to rest. You can find us with the bracelet."
Nami nodded in understanding before paddling away on her small boat, heading toward a different part of the island.
Edric's ship came to a halt at the port of Wavestone Island. With Ace's help, Selina hauled the tied-up pirates onto the deck. Meanwhile, Ash and Uta secured their small sailboat at the dock before stepping onto the pier.
Edric approached with a welcoming smile. "Welcome to Wavestone Island. Let me come with you, I'll personally guide you to the Marine base and serve as a witness."
With everything settled, the group—Ash, the girls, Edric, and the captured pirates—made their way through the town toward the Marine outpost. The streets bustled with activity, but the sight of restrained criminals drew curious glances.
Upon arrival at the Marine base, Edric explained the situation to the base's commanding officer. Ash stepped forward to collect the bounty while the girls waited nearby.
After a few moments, Ash returned with a small pouch in hand. "1.5 million Beli," he muttered. "Garrot alone was worth only 720,000, and the rest were just small fry." Though slightly disappointed, he sighed. "Well, it's fine for our first time."
Edric chuckled slaps his back in friendly gesture and says "You should visit my home whenever you have some free time while you're on the island."
Ash nodded. "I'll definitely stop by." With that, they exchanged goodbyes, and Edric went on his way.
As Ash regrouped with the girls, he filled them in on the bounty and Edric's invitation.
Ace scoffed; arms crossed. "Tch. I knew they were weak, but to have such measly bounties?"
Selina grinned. "Oh, don't be so grumpy, Ace. We just started! We'll rack up a good haul before we leave."
Ash chuckled. "Alright, alright. Let's enjoy this place and see what makes it special."
Hearing that, the girls lit up with excitement, practically bouncing in place. Without wasting another second, they eagerly set off to explore the island.
As they wandered through the marketplace, Ash and the girls noticed the wide variety of clothing styles unique to the island. While browsing a shop, they found themselves selecting children's clothes rather than ones suited for their disguised adult appearances.
The shopkeeper raised an eyebrow in confusion as Lucy stepped into the fitting room to try something on. When she returned, she twirled slightly and smiled. "It looks nice."
Ash immediately caught on and gave a casual grin and a cover story. "Oh, these are for our niece and nephew."
The shopkeeper nodded in understanding, no longer questioning their choices.
After finishing their shopping, they grabbed some snacks and wandered the lively streets. As night approached, they found an inn, enjoyed a warm meal, and secured their rooms—Ash taking a separate one while the girls shared a larger room for the four of them.
For the next couple of days, they explored the island, eventually visiting Edric's home. It was massive—practically a mansion, exuding wealth and elegance.
Edric had arranged a tour for them, with his wife, Selene, and their daughter, Lilia, accompanying them. The visit ended with a luxurious meal that resembled something straight out of an aristocratic banquet.
At Lilia's heartfelt request, they decided to stay for an extra day, enjoying their time bonding with the Vale family.
As the next day arrived, Ash and the girls returned from their visit to the Vale family's mansion. While the girls eagerly set off to explore more of the island, Ash chose to stay behind at the inn, enjoying a quiet meal.
Seated at his table, while he idly sipped his drink when a conversation from a nearby table caught his attention. The hushed but serious tone piqued his curiosity, prompting him to listen in.
An elderly man with a weathered face let out a heavy sigh. "I tell you; things are getting worse. That rising pirate, Mad-Eye Rho, has taken over Driftreef Isle—our neighboring small island, you know the one only a few hours sail from here."
A burly fisherman, arms crossed, scowled. "That's not the worst of it. I heard another wanted man just joined him—Vargas the Black Gale." He clicked his tongue in frustration. "That man's a menace. He used to be a rogue bounty hunter, but after turning to piracy, he's been sinking ships and raiding coastal villages for sport."
The fisherman clenched his fists. "You know I barely made out myself while I went for fishing this morning. I was near Driftreef Isle on my boat when their ships spotted me. I had to sail for my life before they could catch me. If I hadn't noticed them in time, I wouldn't be sitting here right now."
The younger man, looking nervous, leaned in. "And what about the people there? Have they escaped?"
The elderly man shook his head grimly. "No… The pirates have taken the entire island hostage. Even the Marines tried to rescue them and take down Rho, but they failed. They returned last night, defeated and wounded. They weren't strong enough to fight them."
Hearing this, Ash's eyes widened slightly before a smirk crept onto his face. "Finally, something worthwhile information."
As soon as the girls returned, Ash dragged them to their room and informed them about what he had heard while they were away exploring.
Hearing this, the girls clenched their fists, the situation reminding them of Cocoyashi Village.
Selina, her expression dark with anger, turned to Ash. "We have to do something."
Ash smirked; his eyes filled with determination. "I know, Selina. That's the reason I told you. We'll be leaving in a few minutes—be ready. Today will be the last day of the Mad-Eye Pirates."
Lucy pumped her fist into the air. "Yosh!"
