Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: The Storm Before the Battle

Nightfall in the Forest

The campfire crackled, casting flickering shadows on the surrounding trees. Team 7 and Tazuna sat in a small clearing, resting after their encounter with the Demon Brothers.

Naruto sat cross-legged, his face illuminated by the fire's glow, while Uzuhiko ran various calculations and data analyses in the background of his mind.

"Naruto, now that we know Gato is behind this, you need to be more cautious. We don't know how deep his resources go, and it's highly likely that he has hired stronger shinobi to protect his interests," Uzuhiko warned.

"I know," Naruto thought. "That's why I'm going to stay on guard."

Kakashi leaned back against a tree, his visible eye trained on Naruto. "You've been pretty quiet, Naruto. That's not like you."

Naruto snapped out of his thoughts, quickly putting on his usual grin. "Hehe, just thinking about how I'm gonna be the best bridge guard ever, Kakashi-sensei!"

Sakura sighed. "You're still an idiot, Naruto."

Sasuke scoffed but remained silent, staring at the fire as if lost in his own thoughts.

Tazuna cleared his throat. "I… I know I put you all in danger by lying, but I had no choice. If I had told the truth, I wouldn't have been able to afford the mission."

Kakashi sighed. "I understand, but this means we need to be ready for anything. If Gato hired the Demon Brothers, he could have other shinobi working for him. Possibly even someone at jōnin level."

Naruto's expression remained neutral, though inside, Uzuhiko was running calculations on possible threats. "Jōnin-level mercenaries are rare but not impossible. We need to be prepared for someone of Zabuza's caliber."

Naruto's eyes flickered with interest. "Zabuza, huh?"

The First Encounter with Zabuza

The next day, the group continued their journey toward the Land of Waves. The mist thickened unnaturally as they approached a river, making Naruto's senses go on high alert.

Uzuhiko's warning came swiftly. "Naruto, this mist is infused with chakra. We're being watched."

Naruto subtly shifted his stance, keeping his senses open while pretending to be clueless.

A moment later, Kakashi stopped walking. His eye narrowed as he looked around. "Get down!"

A massive sword spun through the air, embedding itself into a tree right in front of them. A figure landed atop the hilt, his bandaged face smirking down at them.

"Well, well… Sharingan Kakashi," the man said, his voice laced with amusement. "This just got interesting."

Kakashi's body tensed. "Zabuza Momochi."

Naruto's eyes widened, but inside, Uzuhiko was already processing information. "A true jōnin-level opponent. We must be cautious."

Zabuza's eyes scanned the group before settling on Naruto for a brief moment, then back to Kakashi. "Hand over the old man, and I won't have to kill you all."

Kakashi pulled up his headband, revealing the Sharingan. "You can try."

The battle erupted instantly.

Naruto's Strategic Play

As the battle between Kakashi and Zabuza unfolded, Naruto pretended to be frozen in fear like a normal genin. But in reality, he was analyzing everything.

Uzuhiko fed him a constant stream of information. "Zabuza is a master of the Hidden Mist Jutsu. He will use it to obscure vision and strike from the shadows. Be ready to move at a moment's notice."

When Zabuza trapped Kakashi in a Water Prison, Naruto saw his opportunity. "Now's my chance to act like a dumb genin while also proving myself."

"Alright, guys! Let's save Kakashi-sensei!" Naruto shouted.

He created shadow clones, making it seem like he had just thought of the idea. While Sasuke distracted Zabuza, Naruto's clone successfully freed Kakashi.

Inside his mind, Uzuhiko was satisfied. "Perfect balance. You showed skill but didn't expose too much."

Zabuza's Temporary Defeat

With Kakashi freed, the battle quickly shifted. Kakashi used his Sharingan to outmaneuver Zabuza, forcing the rogue ninja into a vulnerable position.

Just as Kakashi was about to finish him off, two senbon needles struck Zabuza in the neck, making him collapse.

A masked figure appeared. "Thank you for your help, Leaf-nin. I've been hunting Zabuza for a long time."

Kakashi, exhausted from using the Sharingan, nodded. "You're a hunter-nin from Kirigakure?"

"Yes." The masked ninja grabbed Zabuza's body. "I'll take care of him."

Naruto narrowed his eyes slightly, but he kept his mouth shut. Uzuhiko whispered in his mind. "That was too easy. Something isn't right."

As the masked ninja left with Zabuza's body, Naruto memorized his chakra signature. "Let's see where this goes."

Planning for the Future

After reaching Tazuna's home, Naruto stayed awake while the others rested.

Uzuhiko's voice echoed. "Naruto, we have time to prepare. If Zabuza is still alive, we need to anticipate his return."

Naruto smirked. "Let's get to work."

He pulled out a sealing scroll and began writing complex formulas, preparing traps and barriers. If Zabuza came back, he would be ready.

"This is only the beginning."

Naruto's Frustration

Naruto sat in Tazuna's house, arms crossed, his brows furrowed. Inari's words echoed in his mind.

"You don't understand anything! No matter what you do, you'll never beat Gato! Heroes don't exist!"

Naruto clenched his fists. He wanted to yell at the kid again, but he stopped himself. Uzuhiko's voice spoke in his mind.

"Naruto, remember what we discussed. People respond differently to pain. Inari has lost hope, but that doesn't mean he is beyond saving."

Naruto huffed. "Still, it pisses me off."

Kakashi, sensing Naruto's anger, simply sighed. "Cool your head, Naruto. Losing control won't help anyone."

"I know, sensei," Naruto muttered. He stood up. "I'm going to train."

Without another word, he walked out of the house and into the forest.

Midnight Training

Naruto moved through the dense trees, his mind still troubled by Inari's words. To clear his frustration, he focused on training.

He activated the seals around his body, increasing the gravity tenfold. He moved through his taijutsu forms, each strike faster and sharper than the last.

After an hour of intense training, he moved on to fuinjutsu.

"If I integrate elemental barriers into my fighting style, I could create a near-impenetrable defense," Naruto thought.

Uzuhiko chimed in. "That would be wise. The more versatility you have, the better you'll perform against unknown opponents."

Hours passed. Eventually, Naruto sat against a tree, exhausted. The cool night air felt good against his skin.

"I guess I should head back…" he muttered. But before he could move, his body relaxed, and sleep took over.

A Mysterious Awakening

The next morning, Naruto stirred as he felt a soft touch on his forehead. His eyes fluttered open to see a beautiful girl kneeling beside him.

She had long dark hair tied into a loose ponytail, delicate features, and warm brown eyes that shone with kindness. She smiled softly.

"You shouldn't sleep outside like this," she said gently. "You'll catch a cold."

Naruto sat up, rubbing his eyes. "Huh? Who are you?"

The girl giggled. "My name is Haku. I was gathering herbs when I saw you sleeping here."

Naruto blinked. "Oh, uh… I'm Naruto."

Haku tilted her head. "What were you doing out here?"

Naruto scratched his head. "Training. I got a little… caught up in it and fell asleep."

Haku smiled. "That's impressive. You must be very dedicated."

Naruto smirked. "Of course! I'm gonna be the strongest shinobi ever!"

Haku chuckled. "Strength is important, but true strength comes from protecting those you love."

Naruto's expression softened. "Yeah… I think I get that."

They sat in silence for a moment before Haku stood up. "Well, I should go. It was nice meeting you, Naruto."

Naruto grinned. "Yeah, same. Maybe we'll see each other again."

Haku smiled. "Maybe."

As she walked away, Naruto watched her go, a strange feeling settling in his chest.

Uzuhiko's voice was calm but serious. "Naruto, there's something unusual about her chakra. She is strong. Be cautious."

Naruto nodded to himself. "I will."

Little did he know, their next meeting would be on the battlefield.

A Game of Hidden Identities

Haku stopped in her tracks, her body going rigid at Naruto's words.

"Say hi to Zabuza from me."

The soft morning breeze rustled through the trees as Naruto stood up, dusting himself off. His blue eyes locked onto Haku's retreating form.

For a moment, there was silence.

Then, without turning back, Haku flicked her wrist. A volley of ice senbon shot toward Naruto with blinding speed.

Naruto's hands blurred through hand seals. "Earth Style: Mud Wall!"

A thick wall of hardened mud rose from the ground, intercepting the senbon. The icy needles embedded themselves in the earthen surface with a sharp thunk!

Naruto smirked. "That was kinda rude, Haku-chan. Is that any way to say goodbye to a new friend?"

Haku turned slightly, her expression unreadable. "You shouldn't assume things, Naruto. It could be dangerous."

Naruto crossed his arms. "I'm a shinobi. Making assumptions and taking risks is part of the job." His grin widened. "Besides, you were too kind to be just some random civilian gathering herbs."

Haku's brown eyes studied him carefully. "Then why didn't you attack me the moment you realized?"

Naruto shrugged. "Because I don't sense any killing intent from you. If you wanted me dead, you would've attacked while I was sleeping. That means you don't want to kill me—yet."

Haku sighed and gave a small smile. "You're an interesting person, Naruto. But next time we meet, we may not be able to talk like this."

Naruto's expression turned serious. "Maybe. But I don't believe in unnecessary fights. If we have to fight, I'll make sure I win."

Haku gave a small bow before leaping into the trees, disappearing into the forest.

Uzuhiko's voice echoed in Naruto's mind. "That girl… she's dangerous, but she has no hatred in her heart. Keep that in mind, Naruto."

Naruto sighed. "Yeah, I got that too. This is gonna be an interesting mission."

He turned back toward Tazuna's house, his mind already racing with preparations for the battle to come.
