On Sunday morning, Mu Yue arrived at the Southern Forest as usual, ready to start another round of training.
However, he didn't begin teaching the Breath Style immediately. Instead, he had Might Guy and Obito compete in their usual running race first.
He had checked Obito's progress in mastering Soru using his Identification Skill yesterday and found that Obito was close to achieving entry-level proficiency. Today's effort should push him over the edge.
"To make things a bit more interesting, today's rule is different: the loser's tasks will include those exempted for the winner," Mu Yue said with a smile.
"Huh? So the loser could end up with as many as 80 tasks?" Obito was visibly nervous.
According to this new rule, if the winner completed no tasks and the loser failed to push their limits, the latter would be burdened with 80 tasks.
Although Obito had won occasionally, he'd lost more often. This new rule felt like a potential disaster.
Even Might Guy, usually full of fight
"This is a special Sunday event. After today, we'll revert to the old rules," Mu Yue reassured them.
Both Ob
While they had endured a period of facing over a hundred tasks during previous training, they'd buried that memory deep, unwilling to revisit such hardship.
"Why the special event today? Is it a significant day?" Obito asked, confused.
"It's the 111th day since I became your teacher," Mu Yue replied casually.
Although it was just an offhand remark, today indeed marked the 111th day since he'd taken on the role—and his 111th day in the Naruto world.
"Alright, let's start the race," Mu Yue said.
After completing their warm-up exercises, Obito and Might Guy positioned themselves at the starting line designated by Mu Yue.
"Obito, you've got this!" Rin cheered from the sidelines, smiling encouragingly.
"I've beaten Guy in the practical tests; this race will be no exception," Obito said with confidence.
"Eighty tasks… and with Rin watching, I absolutely can't lose!" Obito steeled himself internally.
"Ready… Go!"
Whoosh!
As soon as Mu Yue gave the signal, Obito burst forward, channeling chakra for an explosive start.
Might Guy, feeling the pressure of potentially facing 80 tasks, also launched into a powerful start, using Soru .
The sound of their steps grew louder, and Obito felt an increasing sense of urgency. Ignoring the fatigue in his leg muscles, he pushed himself to use Soru again.
Might Guy, unwilling to lose in sheer determination, responded in kind. His superior physical strength, combined with his mastery of Soru , meant that as soon as he closed the gap with Obito, victory would be his.
As the finish line drew closer, the distance between them shrank.
Whoosh!
Seeing the finish line, Might Guy entered sprint mode, vanishing momentarily with a burst of speed.
Not to be outdone, Obito also launched into a final sprint, using his not-yet-perfected Soru for a desperate push.
The two figures drew closer and closer. Out of the corner of his eye, Obito saw a streak of green—Might Guy's jumpsuit—closing in rapidly.
"This is bad!" Obito thought. He could tell Might Guy had made some progress.
"I can't lose here!" Obito channeled every ounce of strength into his legs, running with everything he had.
"Soru!"
Both of them disappeared simultaneously, reappearing at the finish line in an instant.
"Who won?" Rin could only blink in confusion at the sudden blur of movement.
"Obito wins. Guy, seventy tasks," Mu Yue announced.
In the final sprint, Obito had finally mastered Soru and used triple-layered acceleration to edge out a victory, thanks to being slightly closer to the finish line.
Huff, huff...
Obito collapsed to the ground, panting heavily. His chest burned, and even breathing felt scorching.
Despite the exhaustion, he was elated. Avoiding 80 tasks was a huge win, equivalent to avoiding two losses in one—and he'd done it in front of Rin!
Thinking about Rin's p
"Obito, you should rest a bit longer," Rin said with concern.
"No problem! It was just a short run. I'm fine," Obito said, trying to mask the tremor in his legs and appear nonchalant.
"Oh, the course was too short, huh? Let's double the distance tomorrow," Mu Yue said, feigning realization with a sly smile.
Obito: …
"So you still have strength left, Obito? Let's run again! I feel like I can still improve," Might Guy said enthusiastically, momentarily setting aside his dread of tasks.
Guy genuinely enjoyed these competitions. Even though he'd lost, he could feel the progress he'd made.
For a moment, Obito couldn't tell if Guy was undermining him or genuinely eager for another round.
"Well, you see, I was using literary exaggeration earlier. You misunderstood me," Obito tried to bluff his way out.
Rin lightly poked Obito's leg, causing it to twitch uncontrollably.
"Obito, don't overdo it. You're shaking so much already. If we double the distance, you won't be able to move," Rin said with a sigh.
Obito felt utterly defeated, thinking, Why is it so hard to look cool in front of Rin?
"Alright, rest up. We're moving on to learn a new jutsu. This one is extremely advanced, so you must focus," Mu Yue announced.
"An advanced jutsu? Does that mean it's super powerful?" Obito's spirits lifted. Usually, the more difficult the jutsu, the stronger it was.
"Yes, it's very challenging. But if you master it, your strength will increase tremendously," Mu Yue confirmed.
The Breath Style, once localized to this world, held immense power. However, it was also incredibly difficult to master. By Fire Country standards, both his styles were on par with S-rank forbidden jutsu.
The Breath of Stone , in particular, was as arduous to master as the Eight Gates. It demanded relentless, grinding practice.
"Teacher, should I learn it too? I'm not very good at ninjutsu," Might Guy asked, scratching his head.
His talent for ninj
"You'll learn it too, but yours will be different from theirs. Just trust yourself—you'll manage," Mu Yue assured him.
Once Obito and Guy finished resting, Mu Yue cal
