Chapter 16 - The Price of Listening

# CHAPTER 16

## The Price of Listening

The reinforced steel door to the vault slid open with a heavy, mechanical hiss. Director Bellatrix walked in first, her heels clicking sharply against the polished floor, followed closely by Scott, who kept his hat low and his eyes moving.

Bellatrix marched straight to a high-density workstation positioned near the outer perimeter of the room. She sank into the ergonomic chair, tapped a sequence on the keyboard to wake the terminal from its encrypted sleep, and pulled up the directory logs.

"Alright, Scott," she began, her fingers hovering over the keys. "What exactly did you want to see—"

She paused, receiving no response. The silence in the room was absolute, broken only by the ambient hum of the server racks. Bellatrix lifted her head, looking over her shoulder, but the terminal alcove was completely empty. Scott was gone.

"Scott? *Scott!*" she called out, her voice sharpening with instant annoyance. She stood back up, pushing the chair away to go find him.

Meanwhile, Scott had already bypassed the main rows of servers. Taking a sharp, calculated turn, he stepped directly in front of the massive Master Server. Just as he approached, a faint *click* echoed from within the glass chamber—the sound of a hidden access panel sealing shut.

Ignoring Bellatrix as she shouted his name from across the room, Scott stepped up to the reinforced glass isolation compartment built into the absolute core of the monolithic machine. He studied the interface through the glass,Just before entering the room, he could have sworn he heard the faint sound of a door closing.

then reached out, grabbed the heavy handle of the pod door, and yanked it with all his might.

It didn't budge a millimeter.

"Scott, what the fuck do you think you're doing?!" Bellatrix's harsh voice resonated from right behind him.

Scott stopped, slowly releasing the handle, and turned around to face her. He offered a tight, unapologetic smile. "This section is locked down tight."

Bellatrix folded her arms across her chest, her sharp gaze narrowing into a dangerous, deeply suspicious glare. "I am well aware of that".

"Okay, then open it," Scott said, gesturing toward the pulsing mainframe behind the transparent barrier. "If I'm not mistaken, this master unit is the brain of the entire institution. If we truly want to erase our footsteps, we shouldn't just be tinkering with the perimeter nodes. We should be deleting the video archives, the log histories, and every scrap of incriminating data directly from the core."

"I hate to break it to you, *genius*, but I've already thought of that," Bellatrix snapped, her voice dripping with venom. "But I can't open it. I've never been able to bypass the baseline firmware lock. Nobody knows the encryption key to this chamber, so technically, it's completely inaccessible."

Scott's eyes flicked back to the glass door, his brow furrowing with intense thought. "That's strange... because I could swear I heard this door sealing shut the exact moment I walked up. If you don't know how to open it, how was it just active?"

The temperature in the room seemed to drop. Bellatrix stepped into his space, her eyes turning predatory and cold. "You've been snooping around my academy for weeks, Scott. Whatever extra-curricular game you are playing here, I suggest you wipe it from your mind right now if it's going to blow back on me. From the way you're trying to make moves behind my back, I can tell you're up to no good. Let me make this perfectly clear: if I catch you pulling anything suspicious again, I will personally ruin you and throw you out."

Scott paused, then let out a rich, disarming laugh, waving his hand as if she had just cracked a brilliant joke. "Alright, alright, I hear you. But seriously... why haven't you at least tried to force your way in? Heavy hydraulics, laser cutters, or a targeted thermite charge? There are dozens of ways to breach a glass partition."

"There are many ways to get in for an ordinary thief, but for me, there is only one," Bellatrix said, turning her gaze back to the monolith. "An eight-digit master pin. And I am incredibly close to brute-forcing the alphanumeric matrix. At most, it will take my software crackers another three months. You know I am a patient woman, Scott."

Scott shook his head, looking utterly perplexed. "I don't get it. You know that if this mainframe functions like the old Stark prototypes, deleting data from the external workstations won't mean a thing. The master server will retain a redundant shadow copy of every file unless you purge it from the inside."

"Do you honestly take me for a fool?" Bellatrix sneered. "Of course I know that. Why do you think I've spent two years trying to crack that glass pod?" She walked up to the chamber, tapping her long fingernail against the barrier with a sharp *clink*. "This glass is structurally reinforced with a layered titanium mesh. It is physically impossible to shatter. And if you attempt to use a plasma torch or a laser cutter, there are thermal security counter-measures wired directly into the chassis that will trigger an automatic system purge. I learned that lesson the hard way." She turned on her heel, marching back toward the workstation.

"What about blowing the entire chassis up?" Scott asked, trailing behind her, his voice tight.

"That would be catastrophic," Bellatrix answered without looking back. "A blast powerful enough to breach the core would destroy the storage arrays entirely. And from what I know, if those proprietary components are fried, no one alive will be able to reconstruct the data. Stark Industries is gone. Not even your precious Vane Industries could replicate this architecture—your R&D department is still vastly inferior to what Stark Tech achieved before the fall."

Hidden in the shadows behind a towering server rack just twenty feet away, Krist's eyes widened in sudden, icy shock. *Vane Industries,* he thought, his jaw tightening beneath his mask. A cold, vengeful fire ignited in his chest. *I'll deal with them the second I'm finished tearing down Bellatrix.*

He pressed his back tighter against the cooling columns, desperately straining his ears to continue eavesdropping on their conversation.

"And even if I completely disregarded the physical destruction of the hardware," Bellatrix continued, her voice growing more distant as she neared her desk, "Keilani once warned me that the core contains a dead-man's protocol. If the physical defenses of the master unit are violently breached, the entire encrypted database will automatically broadcast itself to a hidden, off-site backup server buried deep inside the main Stark Tech headquarters."

Scott stopped dead in his tracks. His expression darkened into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury, his gaze turning lethally cold. "Shit. That wouldn't be an issue if the main headquarters hadn't been completely bricked. If I ever find the bastard who activated the global lockdown protocol in the Stark Tech building, I am going to murder him with my bare hands."

Bellatrix merely glanced at him, utterly indifferent to his outburst. She sat back down in the workstation chair, rolling herself closer to the glowing monitor. Having woken the computer, she immediately began digging through the administrative directories, systematically altering file timestamps and deleting logs.

"You know, sometimes I forget just how terrifyingly brilliant Grayson Stark actually was," Scott murmured, stepping up to stand behind her shoulder, his eyes tracking her cursor. "We should have anticipated that he would build a fail-secure vault specifically designed to lock out his competitors..."

"Yeah He prepared for every possible scenario."

Bellatrix nodded while opening several classified files.

"He always assumed someone would betray him."

She continued deleting records.

"Unfortunately..."

"He was right."

---

At the far end of the server vault, the pair's voices dropped into low, muffled murmurs. Krist could no longer make out the specifics of their conversation. He desperately needed those names and details, but moving any closer across the open floor would expose him instantly.

Closing his eyes, Krist leaned his head against the server frame, drawing a deep breath to focus every ounce of his energy on his sense of hearing. He tried to tune out the ambient hum of the servers, straining to catch the distant whispers.

He would instantly regret it.

As he forced his mind to hyper-focus, a sudden, blinding headache slammed into his temples like a physical blow. At first, the trick seemed to work—the distant, muffled voices of Bellatrix and Scott began to sharpen, traveling across the room and echoing in his mind as if they were standing a mere three feet away. But before he could process a single word of what they were saying, a violent, agonizing spike of pressure erupted inside his skull.

He lost control of the focus. His sensory block shattered completely.

Suddenly, his hearing didn't just magnify the voices—it magnified *everything*.

The ambient noise of the server room violently assaulted his eardrums. The rhythmic, electronic *beeping* of hundreds of system lights sounded like rapid-fire gunfire inside his brain. The low, heavy whirring of the massive cooling fans transformed into the deafening roar of a jet engine. Even the subtle, scraping friction of the air conditioning units shifting inside the ventilation shafts sounded like tearing metal.

The tiny vibration of hard drives spinning.

His own heartbeat.

Scott's heartbeat.

Bellatrix typing.

Everything.

Every sound arrived at once.

His brain felt as though it were splitting apart.

Krist's eyes bulged out in sheer agony. He clutched his head with both hands, his fingernails digging into his scalp as he desperately tried to suppress the blinding pain. A low, guttural, suffocating growl escaped his throat before he could stop it.

"Ghh..."

Blood trickled from his nose.

"No..."

Krist collapsed onto one knee.

His breathing became ragged.

He covered both ears.

The sounds only became louder.

Across the room, Scott's head snapped up. "Is someone in here?"

Bellatrix didn't even look up from her monitor, her fingers still typing away. "No. It's just the automated security override. Relax."

"No, that wasn't a machine," Scott insisted, his eyes narrowing as his gaze locked onto the dark rows of racks. "I'm going to check it out."

He drew a compact, silenced firearm from his inner jacket pocket and began walking slowly, methodically, toward the source of the sound.

The sound of Scott's approaching footsteps rang inside Krist's brain like a synchronized line of exploding bombs. He was down on his knees, the intense neurological overload paralyzing his muscles, making it nearly impossible to even lift his head. Blood began to seep quietly from the edges of his ears, staining his tactical mask.gritted his teeth until he felt that they will cracked, he forced his trembling body to move, dragging himself into a microscopic, pitch-black maintenance gap tucked inside the lower framing of an adjacent server unit.

Scott walked slowly, his boots treading cautiously as he rounded the exact corner where Krist had been standing. He raised his weapon, scanning the narrow aisle.

There was nothing. The space was completely empty.

Scott looked around, squinting into the darkness for a few tense seconds before lowering his gun, "Guess I imagined it." turning around, and heading back toward the workstation.

---

Outside the vault, the rest of the team was completely blind. Although the master server hack had briefly restored the van's main communication lines, the server room's local defenses were still actively blocking hardware signals.

The moment Bellatrix and Scott had walked into the room, Harrison had tried to gun the micro-drone's thrusters to follow them through the closing door. But the second the drone crossed the threshold, the active signal dampener severed the connection. The drone had gone completely dead, dropping out of the air like a stone—luckily landing just outside the door frame in the hallway, which instantly restored its camera feed to the van once it hit the floor.

But they couldn't see inside. Harrison, Luna, and Maya could only watch the closed metal door, waiting in a state of agonizing, paralyzed panic.

After five endless, suffocating minutes, the server room door finally slid open again. Bellatrix and Scott stepped out into the corridor, their faces grim as they walked back toward the elevator wing.

Harrison kept the drone completely stationary, waiting. A minute later, a shadow staggered out of the server vault.

It was Krist.

Through the drone's high-definition camera, Harrison choked back a gasp. Krist's hands were trembling violently, and thick streaks of dark blood were visibly leaking from both of his ears, matting his hair and staining his collar. The moment he cleared the doorway, he didn't check for patrols; he simply broke into a frantic, uncoordinated run, retracing his steps back toward the terrace doors.

*"Krist! Krist, talk to us! What happened in there?!"* Harrison screamed into his headset.

There was no answer. Krist couldn't hear a thing; the sheer agony of the noise overload had forced him to rip his earpieces out and shove them into his backpack while hiding in the server rack.

Down in the courtyard, Maya had stopped her advance the moment Harrison confirmed that Bellatrix had exited the wing. She stood hidden in the shadow of a grand archway, looking up at the fourth-floor terrace. Suddenly, a dark figure burst through the glass doors.

Krist didn't linger. He didn't look for a rope. He didn't hesitate. He vaulted over the reinforced parapet, throwing his body directly into the open air.

Maya's heart stopped dead in her chest. *"KRIST!!"* she shrieked, a sound of pure horror tearing from her throat.

Up in the van, Harrison slammed his hands against the console. "Shit! Krist, what the hell are you doing?!"

But Krist defied every law of gravity.

As his body plummeted from the fourth floor, his tactical training overrode the pain blinding his eyes. He calculated the drop in a fraction of a second. Extending his legs, his boots struck the ledge of the third-floor window frame, absorbing the massive kinetic force. Using the momentum, he executed a flawless, high-speed backward flip, his hands catching the lip of the second-floor parapet to slow his descent before letting go entirely.

He hit the courtyard grass, immediately tucking his shoulder into a hard, violent roll that dissipated the remaining impact.

Springing back to his feet, Krist's eyes locked onto the mechanical arrow that had fallen to the ground during his initial crossing attempt. He scooped it up in one fluid motion, sprinting toward the heavy concrete perimeter wall facing away from the plaza. With the raw, explosive agility of a cornered predator, he scaled the smooth vertical surface, hooked his fingers over the top ledge, and vaulted over to the other side.

The moment his boots hit the pavement on the opposite side, he found himself in the narrow, trash-strewn alleyway where he had encountered Billy and his street gang earlier that morning.

He tried to steady his breathing, but the world around him suddenly imploded.

The barrier wall of the academy had been keeping the ambient city noise at bay, but out in the open alley, the auditory assault returned with horrific, multiplied ferocity. The distant roar of the busy main road, the piercing screech of car brakes, the low, Car horns.

People talking.

Engines.

Footsteps.

Wind.

Dogs barking.

Every sound from the busy street struck his brain simultaneously.

rumbling thrum of engines, and the overlapping chatter of a city night smashed directly into his compromised, hyper-sensitive eardrums.

More blood erupted from his ears, spilling down his neck. Krist clutched his skull, his vision fracturing into shards of white light. A high-pitched, agonizing cry of pure torture tore from his lips.

"Aaaargh!"

His vision spun violently.

Krist clutched his head.

His scream echoed through the empty alley.

His knees buckled. His legs gave out. His strength evaporated completely, and Krist collapsed face-first into the dirt of the dark, forgotten alley, the cold embrace of unconsciousness finally claiming him as his brain shut down to survive the pain.
