Dave didn't expect her first reaction to be that. He had just been a little annoyed that their daughter blurted out the gift right away—he was originally planning to give it to Laurent that night when they went to bed. But now, seeing she hadn't noticed what the gift actually was, he felt rather lucky.
So, he immediately apologized with sincerity,
"Sorry, I forgot that I'm currently an unemployed man. I should be more careful with money. I'll be more mindful in the future."
Then he quickly tucked the bag behind his back and headed into the bedroom. After putting it away, he came back out.
The little girl had originally been very curious about what the dress looked like, but seeing her mom scolding her dad with a stern face, she smartly dropped the idea and didn't say another word about it.
