Damian took a slow step toward Eve. "Would you have preferred if I let him claim you?"
Evelina scoffed. "You think I'd let anyone claim me?"
His gaze softened just a fraction. "No," he admitted. "I don't."
Evelina inhaled deeply, trying to cool the fire in her chest. "I don't know what OakenShaw wants, but I guess this isn't just about me. A royal alliance between werewolf kingdoms isn't something that's decided on a whim."
Damian's jaw tensed. "That doesn't mean I'll allow it."
Evelina took a small breath, surprised by the intensity of his voice.
He meant it.

Before she could reply, a sharp knock interrupted them. "Your Highness."
Jasper.
Damian exhaled slowly before moving toward the door. He pulled it open just enough to see Jasper standing there with an unreadable expression.
"The King wants to see you," Jasper said. "Alone."
Evelina stiffened.
