The masses were only told that invaders were attacking, and Humans were granted powers by an unknown source to defend themselves.
Perhaps the authorities hid the real information to not cause panic, and instead spread lies about invading races and the need to exterminate them.
Although they were right, they just didn't disseminate the right information so as to manipulate the people and retain their control. But the revelation from Nyx had made him understand that Earth was in deep shit, extinction level shit!
