Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Grim harvest part 3

On the new building, Ender, his sniper rifle raised, fired a series of rapid shots, the high-caliber rounds impacting the dragon's eyes. The creature roared in pain, its reptilian pupils momentarily clouding over. However, its thick, scaled hide proved remarkably resistant, the bullets merely glancing off. The dragon whipped its head around, its eyes blazing with fury, and unleashed another blast of fire, forcing Michael and Ender to teleport away, reappearing on a nearby rooftop.

Ender: Crap. (He hissed, reloading his rifle.) That thing's tougher than I thought.

Michael: (He grunted, agreeing with Ender) It seems to have healing properties too.

Ender: Oh, really? Jee, I didn't notice from all the eye shots I fired.

Below, Jack, Kyle, and Rex emerged from the building, leading a group of terrified civilians. They guided them towards the police barricade, where officers were waiting to provide assistance.

"Move! Move!" Kyle shouted, his voice hoarse. "Get behind the barricade!"

A section of a burning building collapsed, sending a shower of flaming debris raining down. Zane raised his arms, creating a shimmering dome that protected the civilians, but the force of the impact sent him stumbling back.

Zane: (comms) Argh.... Guys. I'm running outta juice here.

Kyle: (scoffs) Jack, how much longer we supposed to keep at it?

Woman stepping into the barricade: Thank you," (She cried to Jack, her voice hoarse.) Thank you for saving us.

Jack nodded, his eyes fixed on the battle raging in the street. He answers Kyle.

Jack: Attack it with everything you have.

Rex, meanwhile, was standing in the middle of the street, his black utility belt glinting in the firelight. His eyes narrowed, held the metallic rods aloft, the faint purple glow intensifying.

Rex: Hey, lizard-face! (Rex shouted, his voice echoing through the chaos.) Over here! You want some fire? I'll give you some fire!

He began to spin, the rods blurring into a circular pattern around him. With a grunt, he hurled the first rod, aiming for the dragon's chest. The rod streaked through the air, leaving a faint blue trail, and impacted with a deafening explosion. The force of the blast sent a shockwave rippling through the air, momentarily stunning the dragon.

Before the creature could recover, Rex launched another rod, this time aiming for its leg. The explosion sent the dragon stumbling, its massive frame shaking.

Jack, standing beside Kyle, moved with a blur of motion, his speed leaving afterimages in the air. He darted around the dragon, delivering a series of rapid punches and kicks, each strike landing with the force of a sledgehammer. The dragon, enraged, swung its massive tail, sending Jack flying through the air. He hit the ground with a thud, his suit absorbing the impact, but he was momentarily winded.

Jack: Argh... Never pulling THAT again...

Zane, his eyes glowing with raw power, unleashed a torrent of arcane energy, rejoining the fray. The creature roared in pain, its scales smoking. Jack moved with a fluid grace, his movements precise and deadly. He launched a series of powerful punches, each blow sending shockwaves through the air, impacting the dragon's legs with thunderous force.

He followed up with a barrage of rods, each explosion rocking the creature, the concussive force battering its scaled hide.

Rex: Come on, you overgrown lizard! (He yelled, his voice filled with a manic energy.)

He was channeling all his frustration, all his fear, into these explosions, each one a burst of raw kinetic energy. He was a whirlwind of motion, throwing the rods with pinpoint accuracy, the explosions creating a chaotic symphony of destruction.

The dragon, now under a barrage of attacks, roared in frustration. It swung its massive arms, attempting to swat at the attackers, but Jack's speed and Zane's agility made them difficult targets.

Ender, from his vantage point, continued to provide cover fire, his sniper rounds chipping away at the dragon's tough hide. He aimed for the joints, the softer areas beneath the scales, trying to weaken the creature's movements.

Ender: Fucken hell... It's not going down! (He shouted into his comms.)

Michael, watching the chaotic scene unfold from the rooftop, his eyes scanning the battlefield, saw Rex's relentless barrage of explosive rods. An idea sparked in his mind.

"I've got an idea," he announced over the comms, his voice filled with a sudden surge of adrenaline. "Ender, with me."

Before Ender could respond, Michael grabbed his arm, and they vanished in a flicker of blue light, reappearing beside Rex in the middle of the ruined street. Rex, mid-throw, nearly dropped one of his rods in surprise.

"Whoa! What the hell?" Rex exclaimed, his eyes wide.

"No time to explain," Michael said, his voice urgent. "Rex, can you charge up one of Ender's bullets?"

Rex blinked, his eyes darting between Michael and Ender. "Charge up... a bullet?" he repeated, his voice incredulous.

"Yeah," Michael said. "Like you do with your rods. Channel your energy into it. Ender, give him a round."

Ender, despite his confusion retrieved a specialized armor-piercing round from his pouch and handed it to Rex. Rex, his brow furrowed in concentration, held the bullet in his palm, his energy crackling around it. The faint purple glow intensified, the bullet shimmering with raw kinetic force.

"Okay, I think I got it," Rex said, his voice strained. "But this is gonna be one hell of a shot."

Meanwhile, Zane's magical energy finally gave out. He stumbled, his eyes losing their glow, and collapsed to his knees, his breath ragged. Arthur, still struggling with the stolen speed, rushed to his side, his movements jerky and uneven.

"Shit!" Arthur shouted, his voice strained. He grabbed Zane's arm and, with a burst of erratic speed, dragged him towards the police barricade, where Kyle was helping to coordinate the evacuation.

Arthur: He's out, (he gasped, his voice hoarse.) He's drained.

Kyle nodded, his eyes fixed on the battle. "Get him behind the barricade," he ordered. "So much for having a wizard in the squad...

Meanwhile, Jack continued to harass the dragon, his speed and agility making him a difficult target.

Jack: Hey, whatever you guys planning... Hurry up!" (he shouted into his comms.)

Rex handed Rex the charged bullet and Ender loaded it into his rifle.

Rex: Hope it doesn't explode here.

Ender: Don't jinx us... (He took a deep breath, his finger tightening on the trigger.)

Michael: Better make it count.

Ender chuckled.

Ender: Don't worry. I'm our best shooter.

The rifle barked, the sound sharp and deafening. The charged bullet streaked through the air, a blur of motion, and impacted the dragon's chest, right where Rex's rods had weakened its armor. The explosion was immense, a blinding flash of light and a thunderous roar that shook the very ground.

The dragon staggered, its eyes wide with pain and confusion. It roared, a sound of pure agony, its body convulsing. The combined force of the charged bullet and the kinetic energy overload had overwhelmed its defenses, sending a surge of destructive power through its body.

The dragon, reeling from the devastating blow, stumbled back, its eyes filled with a primal fear. It looked around, its gaze darting between the relentless attackers, its breath coming in ragged gasps. The pain was too intense, the assault too overwhelming.

With a final, desperate roar, the dragon turned and fled, its wings beating furiously as it soared into the sky.

Rex: Holy shit. It worked...

Ender: What happened to not swearing?

Rex: Meh (shrugged) Got over it.

Michael: It's retreating.

Jack: Alright, everyone, get ready to move! (He ordered, his voice echoing through the comms.) We're going after it!

Jack: Cassie, this is Jack. We need immediate extraction, now.

"Roger that, Jack." A woman's voice responded, clear and precise. From the sky, the helicopter, a sleek black machine, descended. Inside the cockpit, Cassie, a woman with short, cropped dark hair, and bright blue eyes, her features sharp and focused, navigated the aircraft with practiced ease.

The team sprinted towards the landing zone, their footsteps echoing through the ruined streets. As they boarded the helicopter, a wave of cheers erupted from the crowd behind the police barricade.

"Thank you!" a woman cried, her voice hoarse.

"You saved us!" a child shouted, his voice filled with awe.

The helicopter lifted off, its rotors churning the air, and soared into the sky. Below, the city was a scene of devastation, but amidst the ruins, there was a flicker of hope. The team, battered and exhausted, had faced a monstrous threat, and they had prevailed. They were no longer just convicts; they were something more. They were, for now, heroes.

Aftermath

The helicopter thrummed, its rotors biting into the air as Cassie, her gaze sharp, followed the trail of destruction left by the retreating dragon. The city below was a patchwork of smoke and fire, a stark reminder of the chaos they had just endured. Inside the aircraft, the team was a mix of exhaustion and adrenaline.

Rex, still buzzing from the fight, leaned back in his seat, a smug grin on his face.

Rex: Man, I was on fire back there, (he declared, his voice filled with self-satisfaction.) Those rods of mine? Pure genius. That thing didn't know what hit it.

Kyle rolled his eyes.

Kyle: Please, (he scoffed.) You were throwing glorified firecrackers. I was the one keeping those civilians from tearing each other apart. That's real work.

Rex: Real work my ass. Any one of us could have done that. But what I did? Oh... PEAK, performance.

Meanwhile, Zane stirred, his eyes fluttering open. He looked around, his gaze landing on the others. "What happened?" he asked, his voice weak.

Kyle: Well, well. Sleeping beauty awakes.

Arthur: You passed out. Used up all your energy.

Zane nodded, his memory returning.

Zane: R-Right... The dragon, (he said, his voice strained.) It spoke. Said something about a prophecy.

Kyle: A prophecy? (He snorted.) That shit for brains, did ALL of this... because of a prophecy?

Zane: I think so...

Rex: Who cares?!? It's a monster and we need to kill it while it's still weak. End of story.

Jack, his gaze fixed on the horizon, nodded in agreement.

Before anyone could say more, Cassie's voice crackled over the comms. "Guys, we've got a visual. It's headed into a rocky mountain area. Looks like some kind of… canyon."

The helicopter banked, following the dragon's trail. As they approached the canyon, the scene below grew increasingly disturbing. Jagged rocks and sheer cliffs created a desolate landscape. But more disturbing was the sight of scattered bones, tattered clothing, and even children's toys littering the ground.

Ender: What is this place? (He asked, his voice low.)

Michael: Looks like a graveyard, (He said, his eyes scanning the area.) A graveyard for… whatever that thing has been taking.

The sight was unsettling, a stark reminder of the dragon's brutality. As they flew deeper into the canyon, the dragon suddenly emerged from behind a rocky outcropping, its eyes blazing with fury.

Cassie: Shit... Incoming! (She shouted, her voice urgent.)

The dragon unleashed a torrent of fire, the flames licking at the helicopter's undercarriage. Cassie, her reflexes honed by years of experience, swerved sharply, avoiding the brunt of the attack. But the sudden maneuver sent the helicopter rocking violently.

Jack: Hold on! (He shouted, his voice echoing through the cabin.)

The dragon, its eyes fixed on the helicopter, unleashed another blast of fire, this time hitting the tail rotor. The helicopter shuddered, its movements becoming erratic. Cassie fought to maintain control, but the damage was severe.

Cassie: We're going down! (she shouted, her voice strained.)

The helicopter lurched violently, its descent a terrifying freefall. Inside, the team braced for impact, their faces grim. Just as they were about to crash against the jagged rocks, a surge of magical energy enveloped the aircraft. Zane, his eyes glowing with a renewed intensity, had managed to conjure a protective barrier, cushioning their fall. The helicopter skidded across the rough terrain, its metal frame groaning, but ultimately, it came to a halt, relatively intact.

Kyle: Holy shit... (he exclaimed, his eyes wide with disbelief.) Zane, you magnificent bastard!

Zane, his face pale with exertion, managed a weak smile.

Zane: Yeah yeah... (he said, his voice hoarse.)

Jack, ever the pragmatist, quickly assessed the situation.

Jack: Alright, everyone, listen up! (he shouted, his voice cutting through the lingering tension.) We're stranded, and that thing is still out there. We need a plan.

Jack: (He looked at the team, his gaze settling on each member.) Cassie, Kyle, Michael, Ender ‐ you're going to search for survivors. There might be people still alive in this canyon.

Jack: (He turned to the others.) Zane, Arthur, Rex – we're on dragon duty. Keep it busy, distract it, do whatever you can to keep it away from us.

The team split up, their movements urgent. Zane, despite his depleted reserves, raised his hands, summoning a wave of magical energy that struck the dragon with a resounding boom. The creature roared in annoyance, its scales shimmering, but the attack did little more than irritate it.

Rex, grinning with manic energy, launched a barrage of explosive rods, each impact sending shockwaves through the air. The dragon, its attention now fully focused on the attackers, roared in fury, its eyes blazing with hatred.

Michael, meanwhile, had already vanished with his group, they raced through the desolate landscape, their eyes scanning the rocky terrain for any sign of life.

Michael: Cassie, take the high ground, he ordered, his voice crackling over the comms.) Use the helicopter's sensors to scan for life signs.

Cassie: Roger that, (she replied, her voice calm and efficient. She clambered out of the damaged helicopter, her movements agile despite the rough terrain, and activated the onboard scanning equipment.)

Kyle, Michael, and Ender fanned out, their eyes scanning the canyon walls, searching for any hidden crevices or caves that might offer shelter.

Michael: Anything?

Cassie: Nothing yet but the sensors are picking up some faint heat signatures. Could be survivors, could be… something else.

The tension was palpable as they continued their search, the silence of the canyon broken only by the distant roar of the dragon and the crunch of their boots on the rocky ground.

Meanwhile, Zane, his body aching, his magical reserves nearly spent, gritted his teeth and pushed himself further. He raised his hands, summoning the last vestiges of his power, and unleashed a torrent of arcane energy. Bolts of raw magic, crackling with blue and purple light, arced towards the dragon, striking its massive form with thunderous booms. The creature roared, its scales shimmering as they deflected some of the blasts, but others found their mark, searing its flesh, leaving trails of smoking scales.

Rex, his grin widening with each successful strike, danced around the dragon's feet, a whirlwind of motion and explosive energy. He held only five rods remaining, each one a precious weapon in this desperate fight. He hurled them with pinpoint accuracy, aiming for the creature's legs, its underbelly, any exposed area he could find. The explosions boomed, sending shockwaves through the air, momentarily staggering the behemoth. The dragon, its 18-foot frame towering over them, roared in frustration, its eyes burning with hatred. It swiped at Zane with a massive claw, the force of the blow sending the mage flying backwards. Zane crashed against a rocky outcropping, the impact knocking the wind out of him.

Arthur, his body still crackling with stolen speed, darted around the dragon's legs, a blur of motion. He was growing more accustomed to the borrowed power, his movements becoming smoother, more controlled. He weaved between the creature's massive legs, drawing its attention, forcing it to shift its focus, creating openings for the other's attacks.

Rex, his grin widening with manic energy, hurled his remaining explosive rods, each impact sending shockwaves through the air, momentarily staggering the behemoth. The dragon, its 18-foot frame towering over them, roared in frustration, its eyes burning with hatred. It swiped at Jack with a massive claw, the force of the blow sending him flying backwards. Jack crashed against a rocky outcropping, the impact knocking the wind out of him.

Zane: Jack! (He houted, his voice filled with concern.)

Jack, his body aching, pushed himself to his feet.

Jack: I'm fine! (he yelled back, his voice strained.) Keep hitting it!

Raz'thul (dragon): (The dragon looks at Jack in recognition as it grunts with smoke escaping it's mouth.) Ar...vey. Must...Kill. KILL... (The cracks of it's body's scales emit a fiery flash along with its eyes as it roars in rage.) KIIIILLLL!

Rex: Jesus fucking Christ! Jack, what the hell did you do to it?!

Jack: I don't fucking know!

The battle raged, a chaotic dance of magic, speed, and explosive force against raw, primal power. The dragon, enraged, unleashed a torrent of fire, the flames licking at their heels. They dodged and weaved, narrowly avoiding the searing blasts, the heat singing their hair, the smell of burning fabric filling the air.

Rex, seeing an opening, hurled another rod, this one aimed at the dragon's chest. The explosion boomed, the force of it sending the creature stumbling backwards. It roared in pain, its scales blackened and cracked where the blast had struck.

Rex: That's it, you overgrown lizard! (Rex yelled, his voice filled with manic glee.) "Come on, give me what you've got!

The dragon, its fury reaching its peak, lunged at Rex, its jaws snapping shut just inches from his face. Rex, his eyes wide with fear, rolled out of the way, narrowly avoiding the creature's deadly bite. He scrambled to his feet, his heart pounding, his breath coming in ragged gasps.

He had one rod left.

Deep within the mountain's shadowed interior, the air hung heavy with the stench of decay and fear. Cassie, her eyes scanning the dim recesses of a cavern, held her rifle steady. Kyle, Michael, and Ender moved in a tight formation, their footsteps echoing eerily through the cavern's depths. The faint heat signatures detected by Cassie's scanners had led them here, into the heart of the dragon's lair.

The cavern opened into a larger chamber, and the scene that unfolded before them was a grotesque tableau of horror. Several figures were pinned to the rough, rocky walls, their bodies contorted at unnatural angles. As they moved closer, the team realized they were women, their bodies naked, their faces frozen in expressions of terror. The air was thick with the metallic tang of blood and the cloying sweetness of decay.

Kyle: What the... (Kyle breathed, his voice a low, horrified whisper.)

Michael, his face grim, moved closer, his eyes scanning the victims. He noticed that their limbs were twisted in unnatural ways, as if they had been forced into those positions.

Michael: They're... they're still alive, (he said, his voice tight.)

Cassie: Barely.

Ender: What the hell happened here? (He asked, his voice filled with disgust.)

Cassie, her face pale, moved to one of the women, her medical training kicking in. She checked for a pulse, her fingers trembling.

Cassie: Tch. We need to get them out of here, now.

The women's eyes flickered open, their gazes vacant, filled with a primal terror. They whimpered, their bodies trembling, their voices reduced to faint, broken whispers.

Cassie: We're here to help, (said, her voice gentle, trying to soothe their fear.) We're going to get you out of here.

Suddenly, a low growl echoed through the cavern, sending a chill down their spines. The air grew heavy, thick with a palpable sense of dread.

The roars of the dragon echoed through the mountain, growing louder, more desperate. Outside, the battle had taken a grim turn. Zane, his magical reserves depleted, lay slumped against a rock, his breathing ragged. Arthur, his borrowed speed faltering, was barely able to dodge the dragon's furious attacks. Rex, with his last rod spent, was forced to rely on his own agility, which was proving woefully inadequate against the monstrous creature.

The dragon, its eyes blazing with triumph, lunged at Arthur, its jaws wide, ready to deliver the killing blow. Arthur, his movements sluggish, braced for impact. But just as the dragon's teeth were about to close around him, a blinding flash of light erupted, and a deafening explosion rocked the canyon.

Inside the mountain, Cassie, Kyle, Michael, and Ender were struggling to move the injured women. The cavern was narrow, the terrain treacherous, and the women's frail bodies were a burden. They were halfway to the exit when the dragon's enraged roar reverberated through the mountain, followed by the sounds of a desperate struggle.

Cassie: We need to hurry, (she said, her voice strained.) They're in trouble.

As they reached the mouth of the cavern, they were met with a terrifying sight. The dragon, its massive form silhouetted against the smoke-filled sky, stood over the fallen figures of Zane and Arthur. Rex was nowhere to be seen. The dragon turned its attention to them, its eyes glowing with malevolent intent. It roared, a sound that shook the very foundations of the mountain, and began to advance.

Kyle: Ah shit...

The dragon roared before suddenly, a blur of motion streaked through the air. A projectile, shaped like a human fist, flew with impossible speed, piercing the dragon's chest. A gaping, bloody hole appeared, and the dragon staggered back, its eyes wide with confusion. The projectile then reversed its trajectory, returning to its point of origin, and exploded with devastating force, obliterating the dragon's head. The massive body crashed to the ground, sending tremors through the earth.

The team inside, covered in the dragon's blood, stared in stunned silence. They looked up, their eyes following the projectile's path, and saw a figure standing on a rocky outcropping above them. He was a tall, imposing man, clad in black, with a white cape billowing behind him. His face was obscured by shadow, but his presence radiated an aura of power.

Cassie: Is... Is that..?

Kyle: No bloody ways. (He said, his voice laced with surprise.)

Jack, who had just arrived, recognized the figure.

Jack: Ezra Darhk... Took you long enough.
