Chapter 57 - Fear and Fire

"As I mentioned before, Voldemort relies on fear. He thrives on it, and consequently he brings allies that generate fear as well. In the past he has relied on giants, werewolves, vampires and Dementors. Yes, they all exist. Werewolves and Vampires typically come out only at night. That leaves giants and Dementors. When I say giants, I mean beings that are 20 feet tall and built like tanks. Giants are impervious to most spells. Dementors are like dark demons – non-magicals can't see Dementors, but they generate a searing coldness and feelings of despair."

The Commander stood. "Thank you Miss Granger. That was very informative and, to be quite frank, daunting. I am going to open the floor in a moment to discuss avenues of attack on the target, and then we can discuss lines of defense, as well as resources needed to battle what we anticipate. First, let's take a short 10-minute break and get something to eat and drink in the next room. Remember, you cannot talk about magic or magical creatures outside of this room. See you all back here in 10 minutes."

....

During the break, the Commander got a call from none other than Madam Bones. "What can I do for you Madam Bones?" he asked. "Commander. I just needed to speak with someone with a cooler head. Minister Fudge is …is…off his rocker, and I am at the end of my patience with him." She ranted. "What can I do for you Madam Bones?" the Commander repeated. "The other night it seemed Miss Granger was acquainted with your Midshipman Fenix. I recall her family and him were going to stay at some hotel. I am trying to reach her urgently. Do you know how I can contact her?" Madam Bones replied. "In what regards are you trying to contact her?" the Commander asked. "Fudge wants to have her arrested for murder. Murder! He is off his rocker. I am trying to warn her to stay away from her residence until I can calm things down." She said. "I see" said the Commander. "Madam Bones. You are aware that Miss Granger and her parents are sovereign citizens of Great Brittan, correct?" "Yes" she responded. "You are also aware that it was determined that night that Miss Granger and her parents were not even in the house during the attempted break in by the Death Eaters, correct?" "Yes" she replied. "As Miss Granger and her parents were not in the room at the time of conflict, how can they be complicit with murder?" the Commander asked. "I asked the Minister the same thing. His response was that 'the Ministry has to be seen doing something, and that muggles cannot just kill wizards with impunity'. I am at my wits end with that man!" she exclaimed. "Madam Bones. I must commend you on your moral high ground regarding your minister. May I give you a piece of advice?" he asked. "Please" Madam Bones responded. "Take the next few days off, someplace restful and stress free. It will give you the strength with what will follow" The Commander said. "I will have your message passed on to Miss Granger and her family, Madam Bones. I wish you a good day." He said, and closed the phone.

The Commander returned to the Briefing Room. "Miss Granger, Dr. Granger. I just got a call from Madam Bones – it appears Minister Fudge has his mind set on charging you with murder. Madam Bones suggests staying away from your residence until cooler minds prevail. If you would like, we can arrange for your family to be temporarily moved here on base." he said. Hermione and her father stood there with their jaws hanging down. Evan, in the meantime was in the back corner of the room whispering to an invisible Dobby. "Dobby. Can you secure the trunk for now? I know we have it under fidelius, but maybe put something in front of it, so it would be more difficult to be seen. Also put some mouse traps around the refrigerator in the house, as if it was the hiding space." "Dobby can do" he said and popped away. Evan then went up to Hermione and her father and whispered that security of the trunk was covered and not to worry.

The Commander went to the front of the Briefing Room. "Alright then. I always believe it's prudent to plan for the worst and hope for the best. Our objectives will be (a) protect the civilians; (b) protect the monument; and (c) eliminate the threat with extreme prejudice. Suggestions?"

"We could declare a local emergency – a leak of toxic gas; that would require the evacuation of the buildings and quad. Have the declaration repeated on the radio, and get the local constabulary to help with the evacuation. It's a reasonable request and nobody should have any problem with complying." Said Evan. "Excellent idea Midshipman."

"Protect the monument and eliminate the threat" prompted the Commander. Hermione began. "This is a very large structure. To get the most bang for their buck, they are likely to use Fiendfyr – that is a magical fire that cannot be put out with water." "Yes, we saw them use that in Goathland – it burnt down the Inn, and you are correct – none of the fire suppression using water worked." Replied General Black. "What about non-water-based extinguishers, like ABC Extinguishers" suggested RJ. "Yes, those could work." Replied General Black. "That won't protect the outside of the buildings, however" Hermione said. "I wonder if we could use some fire suppression runes on the buildings? I studied some this last year." Hermione continued.
