Chapter 96 - Eureka

Not too far away from all of that, a lot closer in fact than either of them was aware— Raten moved cautiously through the winding twists and jagged turns of the vast subterranean tunnel system. Sprawling for miles beneath the harrowing beauty of this strange and distant alien world. His footsteps echoed softly against the walls of the passage, each sound magnified, reverberating far and deep into the eerie stillness.

Dim, phosphorescent moss spread far wider the deeper he traversed into the bowels of the planet— along the damp stone, it bathed the passage in a ghostly, bluish glow. He scowled slightly, feeling the oppressive void creeping into his bones. His fingers brushed against cool mineral walls, seeking the solidity of their smooth, sleek surface texture as he pressed onward.

Suddenly, he paused. Raten's sharp gaze fell upon something unusual, starkly contrasting with the surrounding luminescence. Growing defiantly from a thin crevice in the stone, a peculiar muddy brown plant stretched upward.

The plant was thin and spindly, with frail stems topped by strangely bulbous blooms. Its petals, dark as aged leather, pulsed subtly with an unnatural rhythm that sent a shiver down Raten's spine. How did they survive down here in the lightless bowels of the treacherous mountain range?

Curious, he bent closer, noting that the moss surrounding the plant curled away, leaving a vacant circle of barren rock, exposed in a perfect ring, directly encircling the lonely, drab, little rebel. Raten had to admit, he kind of admired the brave, yet tiny, rebel. It dated to bloom where no other seemed to find it fitting to do so. Despite the completely inhospitable environment, it grew strong right in the midst of a hostile ecosystem.

"Well aren't you just an ugly little fighter." Raten spoke softly to the lonely vegetation as he leaned in for a closer peek. "I think you just might be a kindred spirit, Little Rebel." Intrigued, he carefully reached out, hesitating momentarily.

He was caught between his eager curiosity and his deeply held respect. This thing was alive, and clearly damned determined to remain doing so. Who was he to cut its life short for purely self serving, superfluous, and unserious reasons. What gave him the right?

He stroked his chin contemplatively, weighing his options. Quickly looking around the small cave floor, trying to think of a solution, he noticed another. Just a few steps away, another bloom grew, then his eyes scanned around further, locating another. A bit more, another. Then more, again! Another! There were many little rebels! Sporadically placed a small distance from the next. Each dreary bulb protected by the same bumper-like, ring of no man's land sealing the plant in an island of its own space. Much like an imaginary mote.

Raten found his answer, and his resolve. Grasping one of the blossoms by its slender stem and gently plucked it free. Half expecting there to be a fight, he was surprised to find the plant gave nearly no resistance when he did so. A faint vibration hummed through his fingertips as if he'd disturbed something deeply powerful, yet hidden. It sent a shiver down his spine.

"Let's see what you can do," Raten murmured softly, a mischievous spark igniting in his eyes.

He lowered the blossom close to the nearby phosphorescent moss. Instantly, the gentle glow flickered violently, the moss recoiling as though alive, well— alive and sentient. As the bloom brushed against the delicate surface, the moss blackened and shriveled with a faint hissing sound, sizzling as though seared by an unseen flame. When Raten pulled back, a charred, circular scar remained, dark and lifeless against the softly glowing tapestry of moss.

"Hmm," he purred with satisfaction, his grin deepening. "Interesting."

Moving methodically now, Raten searched the cavern floor until his eyes found a cluster of bioluminescent fungi—soft, fleshy caps radiating gentle blue and green hues. With a calculating expression, he pressed the bloom against one of the mushrooms, watching intently. The reaction was swift and dramatic; spores burst like tiny fireworks, the mushroom flesh dissolving rapidly into a grotesque puddle of dark sludge that fizzed ominously. A pungent scent filled the air, acidic and sharp.

Raten's lips curled into an insidious, triumphant smile. "Now that," he whispered darkly, eyes sparkling with malicious glee, "is very useful." He held the little flower up to inspect it for any damage. To his amazement the flower appeared entirely unscathed. "You and me— we are going to be great friends little rebel. I can feel it." A downright sinister shadow fell upon Raten's frighteningly sadistic looking, twisted smile.

With renewed purpose, he gathered several more blooms, carefully handling each as he repeated his experiment. Each test confirmed his suspicions—this strange brown flower had a remarkable ability to nullify and destroy the glowing flora around him. Each step forward grew more confident, driven by the certainty of his discovery's importance.

The narrow tunnel soon widened abruptly into another cavern, smaller yet breathtakingly dense with the luminous lifeforms. Raten scanned quickly, eyes roving over glowing plant life, dripping softly with moisture and phosphorescent veins tracing intricate patterns across the walls and ceiling. Then, his gaze settled upon a point at the cavern's center, a shadow that disrupted the symmetry of light.

Approaching slowly, Raten's pulse quickened, anticipation thrilling along his spine. The faint glow from the surroundings cast a toxic looking glow onto his alabaster skin. His heartbeat echoed in his ears as realization sharpened within him. The answer he'd been seeking—the critical advantage they so desperately needed—lay here, hidden in the heart of darkness.

"Jackpot," Raten breathed, the quiet word dripping with victorious satisfaction. The cavern seemed to hold its breath, a silent witness to the significance of the moment.

The sinister grin once again returned, spreading broadly, twisting across his face like ribbon, as he stepped confidently toward the center of the cave, his triumph lighting his features with fierce determination. The darkness pulsed softly around him, awaiting his next move.
