Chapter 82 - The Concept of Shunkō

Shunkō is both simple and complex.

The simplicity lies in its fundamental concept: a combination of Kidō and Hakuda (White Hits).

However, the true challenge is not in Hakuda but in Kidō.

The difficulty lies in how to contain Kidō's immense destructive power within the body without losing control or causing self-harm.

To achieve this, one must first possess deep knowledge of Kidōand then carefully select the most suitable Kidō from a vast number of spells.

Although Yoruichi was credited with creating Shunkō in the original timeline, Arima found it difficult to believe that she had done so entirely on her own.

"I'd wager that Urahara Kisuke played a significant role in the process," he thought.

His reasoning was simple—despite working together, even he and Aizen had required a great deal of time to fully develop Shunkō.

Kidō is a combat technique unique to Shinigami.

When using Kidō, chanting is necessary to transform spiritual energy into a specific ability.

The incantations act like a programming language, guiding spiritual particles into precise formations.

Although some skilled Shinigami can use abbreviated incantations to speed up the process, this reduces the power of the spell.

But is it possible to completely eliminate chanting while still performing Kidō?

The answer is yes.

Aside from Hadō (Destructive Arts) and Bakudō (Binding Arts),there exists a third type of Kidō—Kaidō (Healing Arts).

Unlike Hadō and Bakudō, Kaidō does not require chanting.

But why?

Arima had pondered this question years ago and had finally reached a conclusion.

Hadō and Bakudō are external techniques, whereas Kaidō is internal.

Hadō and Bakudō were originally developed to counter the Quincy, who could manipulate spiritual particles for ranged attacks.

In the beginning, Kidō did not exist as a discipline within the Shinigami arts.

However, because Shunpo (Flash Step) was not always fast enough to close the distance, and because using Zanpakutō alone was inefficient against Quincy, Kidō was invented to compensate for this weakness.

By chanting, a Shinigami guides both their own and external spiritual energy into a structured formation, making the spell difficult for a Quincy to disrupt.

Hadō and Bakudō rely on external spiritual energy and require chanting to control it.

Kaidō, however, works internally—it does not draw energy from the environment but instead circulates the user's own spiritual energy within their body to heal others.

Since Kaidō does not need to gather external particles or maintain a structured formation, chanting is unnecessary.

Understanding this distinction, Arima realized that Hadō and Bakudō were unsuitable for Shunkō.

But what if a breakthrough could be found using Kaidō?

Instead of gathering external spiritual particles, what if one could circulate their ow spiritual power within the body?

Just as chanting structures spiritual energy externally, a Shinigami could create an internal pathway that constantly circulates power inside them.

However, Kidō is inherently explosive.

If the body was completely sealed while attempting to contain it, the user would simply self-destruct.

Thus, the key was to create controlled release points—openings on the body where the accumulated Kidō energy could vent outward.

As long as the internal circulation never stops, Kidō's power will continuously flow through the body, granting the user immense combat strength.

When Arima explained this theory to Yoruichi, her first reaction was disbelief.

"Wouldn't that just make your body explode?" she asked.

She understood the basic principle—circulating spiritual power inside the body and forming Kidō internally—but it sounded extremely dangerous.

If the controlled release points weren't perfectly placed, the Kidō energy would rupture the user from within.

To master Shunkō, one needed to be both a Kidō Grandmaster and a Master of Human Anatomy.

For Yoruichi, who had yet to master either, the technique seemed far too advanced.

Yet, the memory of Arima's overwhelming power when he demonstrated Shunkō lingered in her mind.

The raw destructive force and speed of the technique fascinated her.

Despite the complexity, her desire to master Shunkō only grew stronger.

The Spiritual Arts Academy

In addition to Arima's private teachings, Yoruichi still attended the Spiritual Arts Academy.

Though her noble status allowed her to skip classes freely, she occasionally chose to attend.

At school, Urahara Kisuke had been enjoying a peaceful student life when he noticed Yoruichi's arrival.

He wasn't surprised.

Yoruichi always did as she pleased.

She acted entirely on whim, following whatever impulse struck her at the moment.

Still, Kisuke was curious about what exactly Arima was teaching he

Unexpectedly, in a private conversation, Yoruichi told him about the concept of Shunkō.

Kisuke was speechless.

"This... this...!"

At this stage, Urahara Kisuke was still a quiet, withdrawn person who didn't talk much.

But when faced with a true stroke of genius, he couldn't contain his excitement.

"What an incredible concept..." he muttered.

"The combination of Kidō and Hakuda—it completely subverts conventional Kidō mechanics! It allows Kidō's immense destructive power to be harnessed within the body...!"

He continued talking to himself, his mind racing with ideas.

Even though this was only the theoretical foundation of Shunkō, it immediately sparked new ideas in Kisuke's mind.

If Kidō could be cast inside the body, then...

Could it also be injected into an enemy's body?

Could one directly infuse Kidō into an opponent during combat, causing it to explode from within?

Or, what if Bakudō could be embedded into an enemy's body to bind them internally?

Kisuke wasn't imagining things randomly.

He had always believed that, despite their power, Hadō and Bakudō had one fundamental weakness—

They were difficult to land on a moving target.

Enemies weren't wooden training dummies.

They wouldn't just stand still while someone chanted a spell.

But if one could completely eliminate chanting, then during the heat of battle, a Shinigami could inject Kidō directly into an opponent's body—

Catching them completely off guard.

The tactical applications were endless.

Though Yoruichi had shared the idea with him casually, Kisuke's mind had already begun racing ahead, deconstructing and innovating on the concept of Shunkō in real time.
